Abstract Present study deals with the plectological and molecular analysis as well as use of economically important wild Russuloid mushrooms against food pathogenic fungus Aspergillus niger. Three different species of mushrooms viz., Russla laeta, R. nobilis, and R. nigricans were collected and identified from Himalayan range of Pakistan and are found as new records for this country. Major objective of this study was to highlight the importance of these wild creatures as antifungal agents against A. niger. For this purpose methanolic extract of selected mushrooms of different concentration levels viz., 1, 1.5, 2 and 3% were used. This activity is also first time reported from Pakistan by using this group of mushrooms. Results showed that all tested mushrooms exhibit growth inhibition of A. niger and can be used as biocontrol agents. R. nigricans showed maximum inhibition of fungus growth that is 62% at 3% concentrations while minimum inhibition was observed in R. nobilis at same concentration that is 43.6%. Introduction Many people in Pakistan depend on agriculture but various crops are contaminated by phytopathogenic fungi (i.e., Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium) during pre and post-harvesting processes. -

The Macrofungi Checklist of Liguria (Italy): the Current Status of Surveys
Posted November 2008. Summary published in MYCOTAXON 105: 167–170. 2008. The macrofungi checklist of Liguria (Italy): the current status of surveys MIRCA ZOTTI1*, ALFREDO VIZZINI 2, MIDO TRAVERSO3, FABRIZIO BOCCARDO4, MARIO PAVARINO1 & MAURO GIORGIO MARIOTTI1 *[email protected] 1DIP.TE.RIS - Università di Genova - Polo Botanico “Hanbury”, Corso Dogali 1/M, I16136 Genova, Italy 2 MUT- Università di Torino, Dipartimento di Biologia Vegetale, Viale Mattioli 25, I10125 Torino, Italy 3Via San Marino 111/16, I16127 Genova, Italy 4Via F. Bettini 14/11, I16162 Genova, Italy Abstract— The paper is aimed at integrating and updating the first edition of the checklist of Ligurian macrofungi. Data are related to mycological researches carried out mainly in some holm-oak woods through last three years. The new taxa collected amount to 172: 15 of them belonging to Ascomycota and 157 to Basidiomycota. It should be highlighted that 12 taxa have been recorded for the first time in Italy and many species are considered rare or infrequent. Each taxa reported consists of the following items: Latin name, author, habitat, height, and the WGS-84 Global Position System (GPS) coordinates. This work, together with the original Ligurian checklist, represents a contribution to the national checklist. Key words—mycological flora, new reports Introduction Liguria represents a very interesting region from a mycological point of view: macrofungi, directly and not directly correlated to vegetation, are frequent, abundant and quite well distributed among the species. This topic is faced and discussed in Zotti & Orsino (2001). Observations prove an high level of fungal biodiversity (sometimes called “mycodiversity”) since Liguria, though covering only about 2% of the Italian territory, shows more than 36 % of all the species recorded in Italy. -

Angiocarpous Representatives of the Russulaceae in Tropical South East Asia
Persoonia 32, 2014: 13–24 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/003158514X679119 Tales of the unexpected: angiocarpous representatives of the Russulaceae in tropical South East Asia A. Verbeken1, D. Stubbe1,2, K. van de Putte1, U. Eberhardt³, J. Nuytinck1,4 Key words Abstract Six new sequestrate Lactarius species are described from tropical forests in South East Asia. Extensive macro- and microscopical descriptions and illustrations of the main anatomical features are provided. Similarities Arcangeliella with other sequestrate Russulales and their phylogenetic relationships are discussed. The placement of the species gasteroid fungi within Lactarius and its subgenera is confirmed by a molecular phylogeny based on ITS, LSU and rpb2 markers. hypogeous fungi A species key of the new taxa, including five other known angiocarpous species from South East Asia reported to Lactarius exude milk, is given. The diversity of angiocarpous fungi in tropical areas is considered underestimated and driving Martellia evolutionary forces towards gasteromycetization are probably more diverse than generally assumed. The discovery morphology of a large diversity of angiocarpous milkcaps on a rather local tropical scale was unexpected, and especially the phylogeny fact that in Sri Lanka more angiocarpous than agaricoid Lactarius species are known now. Surveys were carried out continuously from June 1999 to February 2011, and 95 species were newly added to a preexisting list. As a result, the number of macromycete species recorded on the grounds of this museum has reached 292. We also mention the seasonal appearance of main species observed on the grounds of Ibaraki Nature Museum. Antitumor and Immunomodulatory Activities of Medicinal Mushroom Polysaccharides and Polysaccharide-Protein Complexes in Animals and Humans (Review)
MYCOLOGIA BALCANICA 2: 221–250 (2005) 221 Antitumor and immunomodulatory activities of medicinal mushroom polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes in animals and humans (Review) Solomon P. Wasser *, Maryna Ya. Didukh & Eviatar Nevo Institute of Evolution, University of Haifa, Mt Carmel, 31905 Haifa, Israel M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2 Tereshchenkovskaya St., 01001 Kiev, Ukraine Received 24 September 2004 / Accepted 9 June 2005 Abstract. Th e number of mushrooms on Earth is estimated at 140 000, yet perhaps only 10 % (approximately 14 000 named species) are known. Th ey make up a vast and yet largely untapped source of powerful new pharmaceutical products. Particularly, and most important for modern medicine, they present an unlimited source for polysaccharides with anticancer and immunostimulating properties. Many, if not all Basidiomycetes mushrooms contain biologically active polysaccharides in fruit bodies, cultured mycelia, and culture broth. Th e data about mushroom polysaccharides are summarized for 651 species and seven intraspecifi c taxa from 182 genera of higher Hetero- and Homobasidiomycetes. Th ese polysaccharides are of diff erent chemical composition; the main ones comprise the group of β-glucans. β-(1→3) linkages in the main chain of the glucan and further β-(1→ 6) branch points are needed for their antitumor action. Numerous bioactive polysaccharides or polysaccharide- protein complexes from medicinal mushrooms are described that appear to enhance innate and cell-mediated immune responses, and exhibit antitumour activities in animals and humans. Stimulation of host immune defense systems by bioactive polymers from medicinal mushrooms has signifi cant eff ects on the maturation, diff erentiation, and proliferation of many kinds of immune cells in the host. -
