Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

All rights reserved. Journal of the History of Ideas 59.1 (1998) 135-148 A New Essenism: Heinrich Graetz and Mysticism Jonathan M. Elukin Since the Reformation, European Christians have sought to understand the origins of Christianity by studying the world of Second Temple Judaism. These efforts created a fund of scholarly knowledge of ancient Judaism, but they labored under deep-seated pre judices about the nature of Judaism. When Jewish scholars in nineteenth-century Europe, primarily in Germany, came to study their own history as part of the Wissenschaft des Judentums movement, they too looked to the ancient Jewish past as a crucia l element in understanding Jewish history. A central figure in the Wissenschaft movement was Heinrich Graetz (1817-1891). 1 In his massive history of the Jews, the dominant synthesis of Jewish history until well into the twentieth century, Graetz constructed a narrative of Jewish history that imbedded mysticism deep within the Jewish past, finding its origins in the first-cen tury sectarian Essenes. 2 Anchoring mysticism among the Essenes was crucial for Graetz's larger narrative of the history of Judaism, which he saw as a continuing struggle between the corrosive effects of mysticism [End Page 135] and the rational rabbinic tradition. An unchanging mysticism was a mirror image of the unchanging monotheistic essence of normative Judaism that dominated Graetz's understanding of Jewish history. -

Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio's Appearance in Italy as Seen through the Eyes of an Italian Jew Abstract The literary evidence describing the revelation of the strange Christian prophet Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio in the communities of Italy and France at the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century has been treated with considerable interest by a number of scholars. W.B. McDaniel was the first to publish the existing evidence on this unusual figure, together with the text of a hermetic plague tract attributed to him with an English translation. These sources portray a divinely inspired prophet, together with his wife, five children, and his disciples, making his way as a mendicant through Italy and France. -

And the Spirit of Sabbatai Zevi Moved Upon the Waters Modes of Authority and the Development of the Donme Sects Paul Benjamin 4/15/2012 Benjamin 2 Abstract The conversion of the purported Jewish messiah Sabbatai Zevi to Islam in 1666 created a crisis among his followers. Many returned to mainstream Judaism; others remained secret Sabbateans. However, a small group in Salonika followed their master into apostasy, converting to Islam in imitation of Sabbatai Zevi. This group, known as the Donme, was very homogenous at the beginning; its members were few in number, knew each other well, and tended to be related to one another. However, shortly after the death of Sabbatai Zevi they split into three factions (a fourth, the Frankists, arose later in Europe), who differed greatly from each other in organization, ritual, and theology. This thesis examines two main distinctions between the groups that led to their divergent outcomes. First, I examine the differences in modes of authority between the groups. In order to do this, I conceptualize two models of authority, the mundane and the charismatic (loosely based on Bruce Lincoln and Max Weber’s theories of authority). The four groups are compared and contrasted based on the degree to which they rely on each of the modes of authority. I also examine the ways in which each group linked itself to Sabbatai Zevi and legitimated itself as the rightful successors to his legacy. In this case this thesis distinguishes among legitimacies conveyed by the body of the messiah, the soul of the messiah, and the ideas and teachings of the messiah. -

Box 38772, Abu Dhabi, UAE Abstract The aim of this paper is to highlight the contribution made by S. Hillellson, a German of Jewish origin who studied at Oxford and became a British subject in 1908. He joined the Sudan Civil Service (SCS) from 1911 to 1933, serving in the Education Department, the Intelligence Department and the Civil Secretary’s Office. It was suggested that the (SCS) famously known as the Sudan Political Service (SPS) was second only to the acclaimed Indian Civil Service (ICS) during the British Colonial time. The Service has been almost a closed British club with a noticeable chauvinism and Prejudice against non British Subjects. The paper gives a brief history of Jewish presence in the Sudan and the origin of the (SPS) as a background to the study. The Paper attempts to examine this thesis, looking into his relationship with British, non British and Sudanese colleagues and students. The paper also attempts to look into his life in the Sudan and after he left the country. A survey of his writings about Sudan is given. Based on the investigation made, the paper found no evidence to suggest that he was treated differently by his British colleagues on the basis of his race or religion. Robinson University of Chicago [email protected] Religious Confessions and the Sciences in the Sixteenth Century, the proceedings of a conference held in 1998 at the Wittenberg Leucorea Foundation, is a welcome addition to the growing literature on re- ligion and science. It presents eleven diverse case studies, each fo- cusing on a different example of the interaction between religion and science in the 16th century. Section 1, ‘Christian Confessions and the Sciences’, focuses on Lutheran, Calvinist, and Jesuit developments in Germany and Royal Prussia. Section 2, ‘Ways of Transmission’, examines the Jewish role in the transmission of science in Italy and the Ottoman Empire after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Section 3, ‘Judaism between Tradition and Scientific Discover- ies’, considers Jewish developments primarily in Italy. It also includes a brief essay on the Maharal of Prague and a more synthetic article on the history of geography in Jewish sources. According to the editors of the volume, the purpose of the confer- ence was to present a very wide perspective on the impact of the Ref- ormation and Counter-Reformation on scientific developments. This wide perspective has in fact produced an extraordinary range of sub- jects. In this slim volume of 161 pages, the essays range from Ger- many and Prussia to Italy and the Ottoman Empire, from Lutherans and Calvinists to Jesuits and Jews. -

Three Faiths, One Holy Land An Interfaith Study on Holy Land Pilgrimages in the Early Modern Period Crystal Kolden The Holy Land, encompassing the city of Jerusalem and its surrounding religious sites, has long been a destination for pilgrims from all three major monotheistic religions, some of the earliest dating back to the fourth century. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1517, the region experienced a pax Ottomanica1 during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the Holy Land saw a great influx of pilgrims. With this tradition of pilgrimage came a vast convergence of ideas and views originating from diverse geographical regions and religious backgrounds. This study examines the travel accounts of four pilgrims of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths to begin unraveling this complex intersection, as well as explore the ways in which these differing faiths and places of origin influence perceptions of the same geographical region. The first pilgrim is David Reubeni, a Jew claiming to be from the Jewish kingdom of Habor in central Arabia. He visited Jerusalem and surrounding holy sites in 1523. Henry Timberlake, a Protestant Christian merchant, then traveled to Jerusalem in 1601. The third pilgrim, Evliya Tshelebi, was a Muslim travel-writer from Istanbul who visited Syria and Palestine in 1648-1650 and again in 1672. Lastly is Henry Maundrell, a Church of England clergyman stationed at the Levant Company’s consulate in Aleppo, Syria, who journeyed to Jerusalem in 1697. 1 Rhoads Murphey, "Bigots or Informed Observers? JH: I'd like to begin with the Posen Library itself, and in your introduction to Volume 6, which is the one you edited, in the period of 1750 to 1880, which is covered in the volume, you refer to the move of Jews from the sidelines of majority societies in which they lived toward full participation, vigorous participation and even shaping of those societies, both because the societies began to allow Jewish participation and because the Jews rushed to the opportunity that was afforded to them with all of their talents and ambition, the process toward participation in majority cultures and societies was in fact messy and a long process, two steps forward, one step backwards, filled with all kind of fascinating, difficult, but also inspiring stories. -

Amelander and his sources 6.1 Hebrew, Yiddish and Dutch sources 6.1.1 Sources: a classification To write his history book, Amelander had to find source materials. In contemporary non- Jewish historiography there was a trend - namely, antiquarianism - that sought archival materials, old manuscript traditions and the like, 428 but Amelander, in his approach, remained within earlier Jewish and non-Jewish methodologies of history writing.
