Introduction 1.1 Between Gans and Zunz: defining the eighteenth century In April 1980 Yosef Haim Yerushalmi delivered the annual Stroum Lectures at the University of Washington. The four lectures were devoted to the intriguing relation between what Yerushalmi labeled ‘Jewish history and Jewish memory’. Drawing upon the work of Maurice Halbwachs, Yerushalmi differentiated between ritual, a-temporal collective memory and the critical, historicized historiography of modern times. The lectures were published, in 1982, as a small volume, entitled Zakhor , and immediately sparked fierce debate about the nature and origins of Jewish historiography. 1 Central issues in this debate included the definition and internal relationship of memory and history, the nature of Jewish historical writing in the sixteenth century and the emergence of modern historical consciousness among Western European Jewry. 2 Despite the criticisms that Zakhor received upon publication, it remains the only comprehensive introduction to the history of Jewish historiography. Yerushalmi devoted his first lecture to ‘Biblical and rabbinic foundations’; the second addressed ‘The Middle Ages’; the third examined the period ‘In the wake of the Spanish expulsion’. In these three lectures Yerushalmi offered his interpretation of Jewish collective memory for each period. He noted ten history books which had been written in the sixteenth century, mainly by Sephardim connected to the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain, and argued that these works marked a ‘sudden flowering’ of Jewish historiography. It is generally known that the Hebrew sources for the history of the Jews in medieval England are extremely sparse. The chronicler Ephraim of Bonn gives 1 a poignant, but not in every respect accurate, account of themassacres of 1189-90 : and historians of a later generation reproduce a legendary story of the Expulsion of theJews by Edward I, partly deriving as it seems from a lostwork of the polemist and grammarian Profiat Duran and partly from the Fortalitium Fidei of the Franciscan Alfonso de Espana.2 Except for one or two oblique allusions, this is almost all. Any new material that comes to light is therefore all the more valuable. A century ago, Zunz called attention to two Hebrew elegies on the English massacres at the beginning of the reign ofRichard I. One of them, by R. Menachem ben Jacob, was presented (as far as the portion relating to England was concerned) by Solomon Schechter at the very first ordinary meeting of the Jewish Historical Society of England, and occupies pride of place after the Presidential Address in the earliest volume of its Transactions.* It is heartrending, turgid, and not particularly informative, being conceived in general terms which might apply to any other 4 medieval massacre. It is all themore surprising that Zunz's further indication has not hitherto been followed up, as I discovered not long since tomy great astonishment. It is true that he no exact information as to the source, which he indicates " gives " vaguely as a French Manuscript ; but at the time when Schechter wrote, so soon after theMaster's death, and while Joseph Jacobs was still engaged in collecting every scrap of evidence relating to the Jews of Angevin England, itwould not have been difficult to trace the requisite information.

    Who By Fire Shanah tovah, I hope everyone is having an easy fast, and wish you a g’mar cha- timah tovah, that you have already been sealed for good in the Book of Life. I spoke re- cently to the kids in my class at the Simcha Learning Center at the Rabbi Stephen and Karen Franklin Religious School about the High Holy Days, and particularly about our prayers. What is the difference, I asked them, between a High Holy Day service, and a regular Shabbat service? Even if you come to Shabbat services every week, it is a bit of a tough question. First of all, even though you come to services, it doesn’t mean you know what the prayers are, their order, and what they all mean. Secondly, we only go to High Holy Day services two or three times a year, so it is hard to make a comparison. One student had a good answer: “The shofar?” he said. Yes, the shofar, which is blown on Rosh Hashanah many times, and once at the end of Yom Kippur, is one difference. Another difference is the vidui, or the confessions. We have both long and short confessions on the High Holy Day service. “Ashamnu, bagadnu, gazalnu...”We are guilty, we have been violent, we have stolen...,” the short confession, and the longer ‘Al Chet.’ “Al chet s’chatanu lifanecha...” “The sin we have sinned against you under duress and by choice, the sin we have sinned against you consciously and unconsciously....” Another difference on the High Holy Days is a stress on Gd as ruler, as king.

    By Tamar Kadari* Abstract This article is a biography of the prominent scholar of Aggadic literature, Rabbi Dr Julius Theodor (1849–1923). It describes Theodor’s childhood and family and his formative years spent studying at the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary. It explores the thirty one years he served as a rabbi in the town of Bojanowo, and his final years in Berlin. The article highlights The- odor’s research and includes a list of his publications. Specifically, it focuses on his monumental, pioneering work preparing a critical edition of Bereshit Rabbah (completed by Chanoch Albeck), a project which has left a deep imprint on Aggadic research to this day. Der folgende Artikel beinhaltet eine Biographie des bedeutenden Erforschers der aggadischen Literatur Rabbiner Dr. Julius Theodor (1849–1923). Er beschreibt Theodors Kindheit und Familie und die ihn prägenden Jahre des Studiums am Breslauer Rabbinerseminar. Er schil- dert die einunddreissig Jahre, die er als Rabbiner in der Stadt Bojanowo wirkte, und seine letzten Jahre in Berlin. Besonders eingegangen wird auf Theodors Forschungsleistung, die nicht zuletzt an der angefügten Liste seiner Veröffentlichungen ablesbar ist. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei seine präzedenzlose monumentale kritische Edition des Midrasch Bereshit Rabbah (die Chanoch Albeck weitergeführt und abgeschlossen hat), ein Werk, das in der Erforschung aggadischer Literatur bis heute nachwirkende Spuren hinterlassen hat. Julius Theodor (1849–1923) is one of the leading experts of the Aggadic literature. His major work, a scholarly edition of the Midrash Bereshit Rabbah (BerR), completed by Chanoch Albeck (1890–1972), is a milestone and foundation of Jewish studies research. His important articles deal with key topics still relevant to Midrashic research even today.

Ottenstein, RJE Beth-El Congregation, Fort Worth, Texas Rosh Hashanah Morning, 5776 A story is told of Rav Amnon of Mainz, a rabbi of the Middle Ages, who “was the greatest of his generation, wealthy, of fine lineage, well built, and handsome. The nobles and bishop began asking him to apostacize,”2 to convert to Christianity, but he refused to listen. Yet, after continually pestering him with the same question, Rav Amnon told the bishop, “I want to seek advice and think the matter over for three days.”3 But, the minute he left the presence of the bishop after saying these words, he began to feel guilty. He was unable to eat or drink, the guilt he had over even saying that there was possibility he might leave Judaism was so great. And so, on the third day, he refused to go to the bishop when summoned. The bishop then sent his guards to bring Amnon before him against his will. “He asked, ‘What’s this Amnon, why didn’t you come back as stipulated— that you would take counsel and get back to me and do what I asked?’” Amnon replied, ‘Let me adjudicate my own case. The tongue that lied to you should be sentenced and cut off.’ ‘No,’ the bishop responded.’ It is not your tongue that I will cut off, for it spoke well. Rather it is your legs that did not come to me, as you promised, that I will chop off, and the rest of your body I will torment.’”4 After being tormented and tortured, Amnon was returned to his community on Rosh Hashanah.

Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio's Appearance in Italy as Seen through the Eyes of an Italian Jew Abstract The literary evidence describing the revelation of the strange Christian prophet Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio in the communities of Italy and France at the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century has been treated with considerable interest by a number of scholars. W.B. McDaniel was the first to publish the existing evidence on this unusual figure, together with the text of a hermetic plague tract attributed to him with an English translation. These sources portray a divinely inspired prophet, together with his wife, five children, and his disciples, making his way as a mendicant through Italy and France.

Box 38772, Abu Dhabi, UAE Abstract The aim of this paper is to highlight the contribution made by S. Hillellson, a German of Jewish origin who studied at Oxford and became a British subject in 1908. He joined the Sudan Civil Service (SCS) from 1911 to 1933, serving in the Education Department, the Intelligence Department and the Civil Secretary’s Office. It was suggested that the (SCS) famously known as the Sudan Political Service (SPS) was second only to the acclaimed Indian Civil Service (ICS) during the British Colonial time. The Service has been almost a closed British club with a noticeable chauvinism and Prejudice against non British Subjects. The paper gives a brief history of Jewish presence in the Sudan and the origin of the (SPS) as a background to the study. The Paper attempts to examine this thesis, looking into his relationship with British, non British and Sudanese colleagues and students. The paper also attempts to look into his life in the Sudan and after he left the country. A survey of his writings about Sudan is given. Based on the investigation made, the paper found no evidence to suggest that he was treated differently by his British colleagues on the basis of his race or religion. The student can better learn how to conduct research using: (1) online catalogs of Judaica, (2) Judaica databases (i.e. Bar Ilan Responsa, Otzar HaHokmah, RAMBI , etc.], (3) digitized archival historical collections of Judaica (i.e. Cairo Geniza, JNUL illuminated Ketuboth, JTSA Wedding poems, etc.), (4) ebooks (i.e. HebrewBooks.org) and eReference Encyclopedias (i.e., Encyclopedia Talmudit via Bar Ilan, EJ, and JE), (5) Judaica websites (e.g., WebShas), (5) and some key print sources. The following essay is offered to the dear reader to help better understand the great gains we make as librarians by entering the online digital age, however at the same time still keeping in mind what we dare not loose in risking to liquidate the importance of our print collections and the types of Jewish learning innately and traditionally associate with the print medium. The paradox of this positioning on the vestibule of the cyber digital information age/revolution is formulated by my allusion to continental philosophies characterization of “The Question Concerning Technology” (Die Frage ueber Teknologie) in the phrase from Holderlin‟s poem, Patmos, cited by Heidegger: Wo die Gefahr ist wachst das Retende Auch!, Where the danger is there is also the saving power. Critique of Cushing Academy’s liquidating print sources in the library and going automated totally digital online: Cushing Academy, a New England prep school, is one of the first schools in the country to abandon its books.
