Parole chiavi: prestiti, forestierismi, lusismi, brasilianismi, lingua italiana, dizionari italiani. 8 SUMÁRIO RESUMO ...................................................................................................... 07 ABSTRACT ................................................................................................... 08 I – INTRODUÇÃO ........................................................................................ 11 II - FUNDAMENTAÇÃO TEÓRICA ............................................................. 16 2.1 As ciências do léxico ................................................................................. 17 2.1.1 Lexicologia, Lexicografia e Terminografia: princípios básicos ................. 18 2.1.2 A palavra sob uma perspectiva histórica ................................................. 21 2.1.3 Níveis de atualização x tipos de obras .................................................... 24 2.1.4 A palavra como unidade lexical .............................................................. 26 2.2 Processos de inovação lexical .................................................................... 27 2.2.1 Neologia e Neologismos ........................................................................ 28 2.2.2 Neologia por empréstimo: emprestar para fortalecer ................................ 33 2.2.3 Derivados: empréstimos ou não? ............................................................ 40 2.2.4 Fases do empréstimos ............................................................................ 42 2.2.5 Classificação dos empréstimos ............................................................... 44 2.2.6 Adaptação e integração dos empréstimos ................................................. 45 2.3Unidades lexicais portuguesas: conceituação e delimitação dos portuguesismos e brasileirismos ...................................................................... 51 III - MÉTODOS, TÉCNICAS E PROCEDIMENTOS DE PESQUISA ............ 55 3.1 Metodologia de investigação ...................................................................... 56 3.2 Estabelecimento do corpus : ..................................................................... 56 3.3 Coleta das atestações das unidades lexicais portuguesas .............................. 58 3.4 Levantamento dos dados: tabelas e fichas lexicográficas ............................. 62 3.4.1 Ficha lexicológica não preenchida .......................................................... 64 3.4.2 Fichas lexicológicas preenchidas ............................................................ 65 3.5 Procedimentos para análise dos dados recolhidos ........................................ 66 3.6 Relação das siglas utilizadas no texto ......................................................... 70 9 IV - COLABORAÇÃO DO PORTUGUÊS NO LÉXICO DA LÍNGUA ITALIANA .................................................................................................... 71 4.1. • Piracy and Political Economy in Malaya, 1824- 1874
ABSTRACT A COVERT WAR AT SEA: PIRACY AND POLITICAL ECONOMY IN MALAYA, 1824- 1874 Scott C. Abel, PhD Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2016 Eric A. Jones, Director Piracy around the Malay Peninsula during the 19th century was extraordinarily prevalent and resulted in the death and loss of liberty for an untold number of people. This dissertation examines the connections between the piracy of this era and the political economies of the Straits Settlements and the Malay states in the region. Malays pirates often had the support of local rulers who required the goods and slaves brought back by pirates to reinforce their own political and socio-economic positions. The piratical system supported by the rulers was a component of the overall Malay economic system known as kerajaan economics, which helped maintain the status quo for Malay states. This system came under threat once Great Britain and the Netherlands worked to suppress piracy in the region and helped persuade the Malay elite to phase out state-sanctioned piracy. Some people living in Malaya took advantage of the characteristics of British and Malay political economies to engage in acts of piracy regardless of the policies of the British and Malay governments. This study of piracy enables us to understand better the experiences of people of various backgrounds living in 19th-century Malaya, along with how piracy influenced their worldviews. • The Prahus of the Sulu Zone
THE PRAHUS OF THE SULU ZONE By jim Warren INTRODUCTION The Sulu Sultanate lay at a most strategic point for the maritime trade of the nineteenth century. China, the Philippines and Mindanao were situated to the north. Borneo to the southwest, and to the southeast, Sulawesi and the Moluccas. The geopolitical and commercial advantages inherent in the Sultanate's location in this 'Zone' were both enviable and unique. This maritime trading zone was to provide a sociocultural context for inter-societal relations and commerce within the Sultanate and beyond after 1780. By fitting into the patterns of European trade with China in the late eighteenth century, the Sulu Sultanate established itself as a powerful commercial centre. The Sultanate's geographical position in relation to Asian routes of trade and exchange and its abundant natural resources for export to China attracted the attention of the West. The maritime and jungle products to be found within the Sulu Zone and in the area of its trading partners - tripang (sea slug), bird's nest, wax, camphor, and mother of pearl- were new products for redressing the British East India Company's adverse trade balance on the Canton tea market with China. The trade which Sulu established with Bengal, Manila, Macao, and Canton, and later Labuan and Singapore, initiated large-scale importation of weapons, luxury goods, and foodstuffs. Taosug (Sulu) merchants on the coast and their descendants developed an extensive redistributive trade with the Bugis of Samarinda and Berau to the south, which enabled the Sulu Sultanate to consolidate its dominance over the outlying areas of the Zone.

I first embarked on my research on Malay literature, history and Southeast Asian studies not knowing what to focus on, given the enormous corpus of available literature on the region. Two years into my graduate studies, my graduate advisor, a dear friend and conversation partner, an expert on hikayats, Hendrik Maier brought Misa Melayu, one of the lesser read hikayat to my attention, suggesting that I read it, and write about it. If it was not for his recommendation, this dissertation would not have been written, and for that, and countless other reasons, I thank him kindly. • Pembudayaan Lepa Dan Sambulayang Dalam Kalangan Suku Kaum Bajau Di Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia: Satu Penelitian Semula

  • The Seafarers and Maritime Entrepreneurs of Madura
THE SEAFARERS AND MARITIME ENTREPRENEURS OF MADURA History, culture, and their role in the Java Sea timber trade Kurt Stenross This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, at Murdoch University February 2007 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary educational institution. Kurt Stenross Copyright © 2007 by Kurt Stenross; all rights reserved i THE SEAFARERS AND MARITIME ENTREPRENEURS OF MADURA History, culture, and their role in the Java Sea timber trade Kurt Stenross With photographs and line illustrations by the author ii Abstract The seafaring people of Madura, situated off the northeastern coast of Java, are one of the leading maritime groups in the Indonesian archipelago. They have played a major role in indigenous shipping, and since the second half of the nineteenth century their importance in this field has been second only to that of the Bugis and Makassarese. With their strong maritime orientation and outward economy, the coastal Madurese contrast strongly with the agricultural orientation of their near neighbours, the Javanese and the Balinese. The first part of this thesis presents the Madurese in historical context vis-à-vis the Javanese and the maritime groups of Sulawesi. It then considers the various historical and cultural-ecological factors which predisposed the coastal Madurese toward seafaring as a livelihood, and which enabled them to eclipse their former rivals along the north coast of Java. The main seafaring centres of Madura during the twentieth century are identified, with these being in three distinct locations: the northwest coast, the southwest coast, and the eastern islands of Madura.

• SUMATRA THROUGH PORTUGUESE EYES: EXCERPTS from JOAO DE Barrosf DECADAS DA ASIA
SUMATRA THROUGH PORTUGUESE EYES: EXCERPTS FROM JOAO DE BARROSf DECADAS DA ASIA Mark Dion Soon after the Portuguese arrived in Indonesia, some four hundred years ago, they undertook a major literary effort to describe its lands and peoples, partly as an inventory of their nascent empire, but mainly as a celebration of their feats of discovery. The sixteenth century became a golden age of Portu guese historical writing when the attention of the Court and the literati was focused on the expansion to the East and when a whole series of reports, chronicles, travelogues and tales of national adventure became available to the reading public.1 Despite the evident bias of the writers in favor of things Portuguese, and their occasional uncritical repetition of the stories and legends they had heard, the bulk of the material which they produced is still of considerable interest, not only as literature but also as a source of information on the early history of the archipelago. Other European travellers had pre viously passed that way, notably Marco Polo on his return from China in the late thirteenth century, but the Portuguese were the first to attempt a systematic description of the region as they found it--before the indigenous society had been deeply affected by Western influence, including their own. Sumatra, the first island of the archipelago to be reached by the Portuguese, was described in considerable detail by sev eral of these early authors. One of the most famous, Tome Pires was sent to Goa in 1511 as a Factor, or supervisor, of the drug trade between the Orient and Lisbon; he travelled widely through out Asia and proved a keen observer of social customs as well as commercial opportunities.

3o6 THE BADMINTON MAGAZINE trust was justified. After about ten minutes, though it seemed more I ike ten hours, the wind shifted again ; we lost no time in wondering what was to be the next move, but got her round on to the port tack, and off she went once more. For the moment this was a change for the better. We were running out of danger, barring reefs, which it was useless to think of looking for, as we couldn’t have seen them in any case, and as the Sun Yap See was making quite good weather of it we were feeling distinctly better, when suddenly Tubby, who alone was clear of the task of helping to control that heart-breaking tiller, gave a shout: ‘ Down, hard down ! the penjajap's dead ahead of us.’ “ It was too late. With a tremendous effort we shifted her helm about a couple of points, but even as we did so the unfortunate penjajap followed suit. Round she swung, right across our bows, and in another moment the long overhanging foresection of the Sun Yap See had caught her fair and square amidships. There was a sound of rending timber, an appalling yell, and the penjajap, ballasted in all likelihood with heavy granite blocks, had disappeared from the surface of the sea, leaving only a few scattered fragments of wreckage bobbing up and down in our seething wake. “ Even though we knew that those aboard the lost vessel had richly deserved their fate, we were horrified by the suddenness of the disaster.
