In this paper I use the notion of performance, especially as it has been theorized within the science studies literature, to begin to make sense of the history and continuing practices of economic geography. I argue that not only humans perform, but also objects. In this paper, I focus on the performance of books, and in particular, textbooks, or as Bruno Latour calls them, `immutable mobiles'. I argue that textbooks bring four attributes to their performance: they travel easily over distance, thereby bringing their message to a geographically diffuse audience; they allow for `an optical and semiotic homogeneity', that is, they take quite different pieces of the world, and bring them together, manipulating them and controlling them, on the same page; they represent an obligatory passage point in the sense that once they are accepted as the standard summary of a field they are necessarily acknowledged by successors; and finally, their effectiveness is in part a conse- quence of their rhetoricödefined as the ability to draw together and integrate within the text a wide range of sources and authors. These arguments about the performance of textbooks are illustrated by two case studies. The first is George G Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography, published in 1889, which helps launch economic geography as an academic discipline within Anglo-America. -

Fifty Years of Historical Geography in Canada 5 ‘Tracing One Warm Line Through a Land so Wide and Savage’. Fifty Years of Historical Geography in Canada Graeme Wynn Department of Geography University of British Columbia ABSTRACT: In this essay I enlist Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers to provide a title and a structure for inevitably personal reflections on the scholarly contributions of Canadian historical geographers and the changing fortunes of historical geography in their country since the 1960s. From the “Northwest Passage” (“one warm line…”) to “Make and Break Harbour” (where “the boats are so few”) this is a tale of considerable achievement, but one that, may lack a particularly happy or optimistic ending unless we attend to “The Field Behind the Plow” (and “Put another season’s promise in the ground”). Because this story, however told, bears the marks of influence from the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere, this essay speaks to developments beyond the territory of Canada and the geographical interests of those who live within its borders. Like several of Rogers’ songs, it might also be considered something of a parable. hen Robert Wilson invited me to give the fourth HGSG distinguished lecture he observed: “You may speak on whatever topic you like. L-n the first three sections of this paper, the observations imparted are put together from Nansen's journals, supplemented by his verbal com- ments and explanations during the preparation of the work. The last section gives the observations made during the time that the ship was drifting with the ice in the summers of 1895 and 1896, and is compiled from written and verbal information received from Scott-Hansen, Blessing and Mogstad, and also from the journals kept by Sverdrup. first section treats the The (I) of the journey along north coast of Siberia, from Yugor Strait, July 29th, 1893, until the closing in of the ship to the north-west of the New Siberian Islands on September 25th, 1893 (78 5<y N. Lat, 132 20' E. Long.). The birds observed during this time were principally on their way south- wards. After the closing in of the ship, no birds were seen until the fol- lowing year. The second section (II) gives the observations made at the time that the 'Fram* was drifting with the ice towards the NW., during the first summer, 1894, up to the time when Nansen and Johansen started on their sledge-journey, March 14th, 1895. This last point lies in about 84 N. Lat., < 1010 55 E. Lon g. The first bird seen in the spring of 1894 (a gull, probably Pagophila eburnea), appeared on May 13th; birds were seen now and again until after the middle of August. After August 23rd, or the day when all the channels and lanes about the ship began to freeze up, no birds were seen. -

This article critically examines the currently popular renewal in human geogra- phy inspired by relational thinking. Particular emphasis is directed to formula- tions informed by the philosophies of immanence. It is argued that this tendency carries the risk of being narrowed into cursory excursions on the immediate geographies of what happens. The article is consequently concerned about the resulting scholarly indifference when it comes to socio-spatial discontinuities and circles of particularity. It is also shown in what type of settings the ‘imma- nent relationalism’ becomes a too general view to explain satisfactorily the earthly co-being of humans and non-humans, and presents alternative ‘lines of flight’. The case study focusing on the indigenous Sámi in the European North exemplifies the nuances of cultural domination versus decline in a multilingual milieu whereupon some criteria for identifying particular place-making under the general pressures of all-inclusion are formulated.
