  • Coastal Property Resources in Goa – Alarming Trends
Coastal Property Resources in Goa – Alarming Trends Dr. Sairam Bhat Assistant Professor of Law, National Law School of India University, Bangalore and Ms. Smita Srivastava Sr. Lecturer, Saraswath College, Maupsa, Goa If you want a piece of Goa's coastline, follow three simple steps. Just grab the land, build on it(after making pretences that your structures are temporary) and then forget it. 1 Introduction Tourism in Goa has largely been and still remains ‘Beach tourism’. The beaches in Goa have been exploited to the hilt. Over 90% of domestic tourists and 99% of international tourists visit and reside along the beach front. 2 The packaging of Goa as a major international tourist destination is still actively underway, even though the number of tourists visiting Goa has exceeded the region’s carrying capacity, bringing about a steady and relentless degradation of the natural environment as well as a deterioration of the social and cultural fabric. Tourism, now is Goa’s Primary Industry. It handles 12% of all foreign tourist arrivals in India. Goa receives more tourists per annum than its total residential population (refer T.No.1, as per govt. sources, the population of Goa for the year 08-09 was 13.48 lakhs)3 The decisive issue facing any tourism destination is the benefit – cost ratio. This has never been calculated in the State. Destruction of the environment on the scale occurring in Goa can only be justified if the returns from any industry are such that they lead to enhancement of prosperity, provision of employment and reduction of poverty levels, since poverty is described as the greatest threat to environmental protection.

  • Candolim Beach in Goa
Candolim Beach In Goa A view of Candolim Beach in Goa Candolim Beach is the second largest beach in Goa. A continuation of the Calangute beach, it stretches lazily with its beautiful scrub-covered dunes. These dunes attract a lot of tourists every year, and there is an endless number of things to do, once you arrive at the beach- water sports, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and lots more. For those who are not fond of adventure sports, there is always fishing. Tourists can also enjoy sea excursions where they are taken far into the sea from where perfect sunset shots can be captured. Renowned for its quiet, Candolim is one of the most serene beaches of the state. Its environment helps sustain schools of fish and makes it a treasure spot for fishing. Compared to other beaches like Calangute, Candolim has fewer visitors on its shores, which makes it a gem for lovers of pristine nature. Nightlife on the beach too, is less raucous. As Candolim’s long, narrow beach joins the smaller Sinquerim Beach on its south, a series of beach shacks offering sun beds with shade come into view. This area is also filled with a string of Candolim Beach Huts with decent facilities that are also easy on the pocket. Even though, Candolim has its fair share of beach-related excitement, the most recent buzz was not around its many water sports, but around the presence of a 240-meter long-ore carrier called the River Princess that ran aground off the Candolim-Sinquerim coast on June 2000.

It was a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe at that time. This old Portuguese fort stands on the beach south of Candolim, at the shore of the Mandovi River. It was initially tasked with defense of shipping and the nearby Bardez sub-district. A freshwater spring within the fort provided water supply to the ships that used to stop by. This is how the fort got its name: Aguada, meaning watery in the Portuguese language. Crews of passing ships would often visit to replenish their freshwater stores. On the fort stands a four-story Portuguese lighthouse, erected in 1864 and the oldest of its kind in Asia. Built in 1612, it was once the grandstand of 79 cannons. It has the capacity of storing 2,376,000 gallons of water, one of the biggest freshwater storages of the time in whole of Asia. This fort is divided in two segments: the upper part acted as fort and watering station, while the lower part served as a safe berth for Portuguese ships.
