It was a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe at that time. This old Portuguese fort stands on the beach south of Candolim, at the shore of the Mandovi River. It was initially tasked with defense of shipping and the nearby Bardez sub-district. A freshwater spring within the fort provided water supply to the ships that used to stop by. This is how the fort got its name: Aguada, meaning watery in the Portuguese language. Crews of passing ships would often visit to replenish their freshwater stores. On the fort stands a four-story Portuguese lighthouse, erected in 1864 and the oldest of its kind in Asia. Built in 1612, it was once the grandstand of 79 cannons. It has the capacity of storing 2,376,000 gallons of water, one of the biggest freshwater storages of the time in whole of Asia. This fort is divided in two segments: the upper part acted as fort and watering station, while the lower part served as a safe berth for Portuguese ships. Whereas the upper part has a moat, underground water storage chamber, gunpowder room, lighthouse, and bastions, it also has a secret escape passage to use during time of war and emergency. The lighthouse at the initial stage is used to emit light once in 7 minutes. GOA SINQUERIM BEACH Sinquerim is famous for its beautiful beach. It is 16 km from Panaji. Nearest railway station is at Carambolim. Nearest airport is Dabolim Airport. GOA SALIGAO CHURCH One of the most beautiful churches in Goa. It is the Parish Church for the village of Saligao. The Goa Tourism Department has made arrangements to illuminate the church at night. It looks like a shimmering jewel in the fields as you drive by on the Chogum road from Panjim to Calangute. Dr Wilfred de Souza, as he was laid to rest after being accorded a state funeral following a solemn funeral service at Mae de Deus church on Sunday the 6th September 2015. GOA CHAPORA FORT Chapora Fort (Devanagari: ??????), located in Bardez, Goa, rises high above the Chapora River. The site was the location of a fort built by Muslim ruler Adil Shah called Shahpura, whose name the Portuguese altered to Chapora. The fort changed hands several times after Portuguese acquired Bardez. Trying to end the Portuguese rule in Goa, Prince Akbar joined his father's enemies, the Marathas in 1683 and made this place his base camp.[citation needed] It became the northern outpost of the Old Conquests. After the Portuguese recovered from an encounter with the Marathas, they strengthened their northern defenses and provided shelter to the people there. GOA BAGA BEACH Baga Beach is a popular beach and tourist destination in North Goa. Baga is located at the north end of the contiguous beach stretch that starts from Sinquerim, Candolim, leads to Calangute, and then to Baga GOA ANJUNA BEACH Anjuna Beach is a beach in Goa, which is located 18 kilometres away from Panaji and 8 kilometres to the west of Mapusa, North Goa. • Anjuna Beach, Goa
Anjuna Beach, Goa The Beach at Anjuna is famous for its night parties and water sports A charming façade of the quaint blue sea on one side and picturesque palm trees on the other, shelters the sunset sands of Anjuna Beach. The powdered white sands lined with red laterite rocks give the beach its characteristic rocky formation. This formation, called the Ozran juts out into the Arabian Sea and is known as the Jewel of Anjuna. It lies between the Anjuna Beach and the Vagator Beach. For years, this formation has attracted the eyes of travelers and geologists alike. Anjuna, in spite of being just a seaside village continues to attract the attention of travelers even today, not just because of its elegant rock formation but also its history. The 1950s and 60s saw the liberating Hippie Movement that freed Western youngsters from the shackles of narrow capitalism and encouraged them to be one with nature and self. Anjuna was one of the key places where this movement gained prominence. History records that this village was first discovered by a group of these Hippie travelers that included Eight Finger Eddie, among others. Rave parties with trance music filled the serene beach air at night while days were spent tripping on drugs and alcohol. Other beaches of Goa soon followed suit. The times have since passed, but even now Anjuna is one of the most popular party spots in the world. Each year, foreigners from round the world come over to this small seaside village for its full moon parties. Trance music coupled with rave parties dominate the week of Christmas to New Year, beckoning the traveler to all sorts of forbidden pleasures.

  • Coastal Property Resources in Goa – Alarming Trends
Coastal Property Resources in Goa – Alarming Trends Dr. Sairam Bhat Assistant Professor of Law, National Law School of India University, Bangalore and Ms. Smita Srivastava Sr. Lecturer, Saraswath College, Maupsa, Goa If you want a piece of Goa's coastline, follow three simple steps. Just grab the land, build on it(after making pretences that your structures are temporary) and then forget it. 1 Introduction Tourism in Goa has largely been and still remains ‘Beach tourism’. The beaches in Goa have been exploited to the hilt. Over 90% of domestic tourists and 99% of international tourists visit and reside along the beach front. 2 The packaging of Goa as a major international tourist destination is still actively underway, even though the number of tourists visiting Goa has exceeded the region’s carrying capacity, bringing about a steady and relentless degradation of the natural environment as well as a deterioration of the social and cultural fabric. Tourism, now is Goa’s Primary Industry. It handles 12% of all foreign tourist arrivals in India. Goa receives more tourists per annum than its total residential population (refer T.No.1, as per govt. sources, the population of Goa for the year 08-09 was 13.48 lakhs)3 The decisive issue facing any tourism destination is the benefit – cost ratio. This has never been calculated in the State. Destruction of the environment on the scale occurring in Goa can only be justified if the returns from any industry are such that they lead to enhancement of prosperity, provision of employment and reduction of poverty levels, since poverty is described as the greatest threat to environmental protection.
