Этот семинар был первым в истории сотрудничества между кафедрой русской литературы Тартуского государственного уни­ верситета и кафедрой русского языка и литературы Хельсинк­ ского университета. Мы намерены устраивать совместные встречи и в дальней­ шем. Следующий семинар будет проведен в Тарту в июне теку­ щего года. С большим интересом воспринимая новую форму сотрудни­ чества, финская сторона отдает должное научному авторитету и профессиональной компетентности своих тартуских коллег. Сре­ ди них следует выделить имя профессора Ю. М. Лотмана, участие которого в работе семинара придало ему особую актуальность. Проф. Лотман выступил в Хельсинки по вопросам семиотики не только на нашем совместном семинаре, но и в других аудиториях. Liisa Byckling Pekka Pesonen I JURI LOTMAN Über die Semiosphäre Zum Andenken an Roman Jakobson Die Behandlung von semiotischen Fakten gemäß der Saussureschen Linguistik kann dem gegenwärtigen Stand der Semiotik nicht mehr genügen. Nach zwanzig Jahren semiotischer Forschung können wir jetzt annehmen, daß streng begrenzte und funktional eindeutige Systeme, an und für sich genommen, isoliert nicht funktionieren können. Sie funk­ tionieren nur innerhalb eines semiotischen Kontinuums, das mit hetero­ genen und auf verschiedenen Entwicklungsstufen stehenden Bildungen gefüllt ist. Ein solches Kontinuum nennen wir — nach dem von W. I. Wernadskij ausgearbeiteten Begriff der Biosphäre — die Semiosphäre. Die Semiosphäre ist ein solcher semiotischer Raum, außerhalb dessen die Existenz von Semiosis unmöglich ist. Die Semiosphäre ist durch eine Reihe von Merkmalen gekennzeich­ net. 1. U m grenztheit Der Begriff der Semiosphäre ist mit bestimmter Homogenität und In­ dividualisierung verbunden. Beide Begriffe — Homogenität wie Indi­ vidualisierung — sind schwer formal zu bestimmen und hängen von dem Beschreibungssystem ab, was aber ihre Realität und gute Unter­ scheidung auf intuitiver Ebene nicht aufhebt. Diese Begriffe denken die Abgegrenztheit der Semiosphäre von den sie umgebenden äußeren oder anderen semiotischen Räumen mit hinzu. Einer der Grundbegriffe der semiotischen Umgrenztheit ist die ’’Grenze”. Falls der Raum der Semiosphäre abstrakten Charakter hat, darf man seine Grenze nicht konkret verstehen. Ähnlich wie in der Ma­ thematik die Grenze eine Menge von Punkten ist, die gleichzeitig zum äußeren wie zum inneren Raum gehören, ist die semiotische Grenze die Summe von bilingualen Übersetzern bzw. ’’Filtern”, die die Texte aus 8 einer Sprache (oder mehreren) in eine andere, außerhalb der gegebe­ nen Semiosphäre stehende zu übersetzen haben. Die ”Geschlossenheit” der Semiosphäre tritt dadurch zum Vorschein, daß sie nicht imstande ist, mit extrasemiotischen Texten oder Nicht-Texten in Berührung zu kommen. Damit diese für die Semiosphäre Realität werden können, hat sie sie in eine ihrer inneren Sprachen zu übersetzen oder extrasemioti- sche Fakten zu semiotisieren. Diesbezüglich kann man die Grenzpunkte der Semiosphäre mit den Gefühlsrezeptoren vergleichen, die von außen kommende Reize in die Sprache unseres Nervensystems übersetzen, oder auch mit einem Ubersetzungsblock, der die der gegebenen Semiosphäre fremde Außenwelt adaptiert. Nun ist es aufgrund dessen offenbar, daß der Begriff der ’’Grenze” mit dem der semiotischen Individualisierung korreliert. Man kann in diesem Sinne behaupten, daß die Semiosphäre eine ’’semiotische Persönlichkeit” darstellt. Ungeachtet seiner empirischen Unbestreit­ barkeit und intuitiven Offensichtlichkeit bringt dieser Begriff jedoch außerordentliche Schwierigkeiten bei seiner formalen Definition mit sich. Es ist bekannt, daß die Grenze der Persönlichkeit als kultur­ historische Erscheinung von der Art der Kodechiffrierung abhängt. So können z. B. die Frau, die Kinder, die unfreie Dienerschaft, die Vasallen in einigen Systemen in die Person des Mannes, des Herrn, mit eingeschlossen werden, wobei sie keine selbständige Individualität besitzen, während man sie in anderen Systemen als eigenständige Persönlichkeiten betrachtet. Diese Erscheinung kommt in der Relativität des semiotischen Rechtes anschaulich zum Ausdruck. Wenn Ivan der Schreckliche einen mit Bann belegten Bojaren nicht nur samt seiner Fa­ milie, sondern auch mit seiner ganzen Dienerschaft hinrichten ließ, so be­ deutete dies keineswegs, der Zar habe sich vor der Rache eines Cholopen (eines leibeigenen Dieners) gefürchtet. Es lag vielmehr hier der Begriff der kollektiven, nicht der individuellen Persönlichkeit zugrunde, wenn — wie auch im Fall der Blutrache — das ganze Geschlecht als eine juristi­ sche Person die Verantwortung trägt. Die Grenze des semiotischen Raums ist kein künstlicher Begriff, son­ dern die wichtigste funktionale und strukturelle Position, die das Wesen der Semiosphäre bedingt. Es ist der bilinguale Mechanismus, der äußere Mitteilungen in die innere Sprache der Semiosphäre und umgekehrt übersetzt. Auf diese Weise kann die Semiosphäre über ihre Grenze mit heterogenen und nicht-semiotischen Räumen Kontakt aufnehmen. Sobald wir zum Bereich der Semantik übergehen, müssen wir an die 9 außersemiotische Realität appellieren. Es ist aber nicht zu vergessen, daß diese Realität für die entsprechende Semiosphäre nur insofern ”an und für sich” Realität wird, inwiefern sie in ihre Sprache übersetzbar ist (ähnlich wie chemische Stoffe nur dann von einer biologischen Zelle aufgenommen werden können, wenn sie in die der Zelle eigenen biologi­ schen Strukturen übersetzt sind. Beide Fälle sind Erscheinungsformen ein und desselben Gesetzes). Die Funktion jeder Grenze und jeder Haut (von der Membrane der lebenden Zelle über die Biosphäre, die nach Wernadskij als Haut unsere Erde bedeckt, bis zu den Grenzen der Semiosphäre) besteht in der Beschränkung von Eindringung, Filtration und adaptierender Übertragung des Äußeren ins Innere. Auf den verschiedenen Ebenen wird diese Invariantfunktion verschiedenartig realisiert. Auf der Ebene der Semiosphäre bedeutet sie Abgrenzung des Eigenen vom Fremden, Filtration der äußeren Mitteilungen und Übersetzung derselben in die eigene Sprache wie auch Umwandlung von äußeren Nicht-Mitteilungen in Mitteilungen, d. h. Semiotisierung des von außerhalb der Grenze Kom­ menden und seine Umgestaltung in Information. Aus diesem Blickwinkel gesehen gehören alle Mechanismen, die äußere Kontakte zu bewältigen haben, zur Struktur der Grenze der Semiosphäre. Die gesamte Grenze der Semiosphäre wird von den Gren­ zen anderer Kulturräume überschnitten. In den Fällen, wo ein Kulturraum territorialen Charakter hat, wächst der Grenze elementare räumliche Bedeutung zu. Jedoch bleibt ihre Funktion, als Puffermechanismus und eine Art Übersetzungswerk zu dienen, auch in diesem Fall erhalten. Wenn zum Beispiel die Semiosphäre mit einem ”in Besitz genommenen” kulturellen Raum identifiziert und die jenseits der Grenze befindliche Welt als Gebiet chaotischer Elemente charakterisiert wird, kann man die semiotischen Strukturen in territori­ aler Hinsicht folgendermaßen aufteilen: Die Personen, die kraft besonderer Begabung (Zauberer) oder be­ ruflicher Tätigkeit (Müller, Schmied, Henker) zu beiden Welten gehören und etwa eine Art Übersetzer sind, siedeln sich an der territorialen Peripherie, an der Grenze zwischen kulturellen und mythologischen

    Television Works of Bernard Herrmann By William Wrobel While Bernard Herrmann is generally best known as a feature film composer, he also established a prodigious amount of work for both radio and television. The scope of this paper is Herrmann’s television music that ranges from his first (“A Christmas Carol”) in December 1954 to his known final one (an episode of The Virginian titled “Last Grave At Socorro Creek”) in early 1969. The format of this paper is to elaborate, at least in part, on each of his works for the “small screen” based on as complete a list that can be presently verified. This presentation will not necessarily be based in factual, chronological order since exact dates of completion are rarely given in his television scores (unlike most of his feature film works). A list based on original airdates would be logical, but this would not be applicable to his television “suites” (such as the so-called Western Saga suite or collection of thematic cues). Such suites for the CBS-TV Music Library were composed for the purpose of being later “tracked” when needed as part of a body of “stock” music for episodes of CBS series which had no original score, tracked in by a music editor (usually Gene Feldman). For purposes of simplicity, the sequence of this paper’s presentation of Herrmann’s television works will be based according to the two only entertainment entities he did television work for: CBS and Universal-Revue Studios (the latter productions usually aired on the NBC network). Only in one case (“The Richard Boone Show”) were the shows produced at MGM Studios for NBC.
