Paul Hardy's Session Tunebook 2017 29 Jan, 2018 Paul Hardy’s Session Tunebook 2017 Introduction This tunebook contains tunes I have learned to play on my English concertina, that are played at folk music sessions: particularly around Cambridge (England) and Redlands (California), and at some UK concertina gatherings like those at Kilve in Somerset. They should also be playable on other folk melody instruments like fiddle, whistle, flute, or dulcimer. Most are traditional tunes from the British Isles, including many English, Irish, and Scottish dance tunes, but others are an eclectic mix of session favourites. Many have been learned by ear or handouts from various sessions in the UK and US, while others have been adapted from Internet resources, in abc, midi or visual score formats. All are believed free of current copyright (unless noted explicitly), or else appear to have been placed in the public domain as part of the ongoing live folk music tradition. Please let me know if you are the owner of any that are under access restrictions and I’ll remove them. I have tried to present simple versions of most tunes, without much decoration and interpretation, so add your own triplets, grace notes and variations. I have included guitar chords, sometimes refined from computer-generated ones - use these as guidance, not definitive! Tunes in 4/4 time that have the rhythm indication "Hornpipe" should usually be ’swung’ - lengthen the first and shorten the second in every pair of quavers - as in "Thursday". Elsewhere these are sometimes written as ’dotted quaver, semiquaver’, but that ratio of 3:1 seems too high - perhaps try for around 2:1. This tunebook has been prepared using the abcm2ps software, with help from abc2midi, abcmus, Melody Assistant, ABCexplorer, and EasyABC. A big thank you goes to those creative and dedicated people who give their time to create and maintain low-cost or free and open source software for abc music editing and output. Thanks also go to Greenshoots (www.greenshootsmusic.org.uk) for the slow sessions near Cambridge in England that let me learn many of these tunes, and then refined them (with special thanks to the Brind family for chord revisions); to the Chiltinas concertina group near Bedford and the WCCP Kilve weekends in Somerset that gave me concertina technique and playing confidence; the Ceili House Band in Redlands in California that opened my ears to the range of Irish music; and the celtic jam sessions at Green Valley Lake in the nearby San Bernadino Mountains that broadened my repertoire. The current version of this tunebook, in ABC and in PDF forms, is downloadable for free from Paul’s web site at www.paulhardy.net, or you can order there a printed and bound copy (via Lulu.com). Find there also Paul Hardy’s Annex Tunebook for new and improved tunes and errata since last major release of the Session Tunebook, and the Basic Tunebook, with about 60 of the most common and simpler tunes. The book is divided into four sections. The first section, "Language Lore," examines some of the myths and misconceptions that affect attitudes toward language--and towards English in particular. The second section, "Language Usage," examines some specific questions of meaning and usage. Section 3, "Language Trends," examines some controversial r trends in English vocabulary, and some developments too new to have received comment before. The fourth section, "Language Politics," treats several aspects of linguistic politics, from special attempts to deal with the ethnic, religious, or sex-specific elements of vocabulary to the broader issues of language both as a reflection of the public consciousness and the U.S. Constitution and as a refuge for the most private forms of expression. • Bill Frisell's Disfarmer Project
For immediate release: February 20, 2007 Media contacts: Erik Pepple, 614 688-3261 or [email protected] BILL FRISELL’S DISFARMER PROJECT DEBUTS AT WEXNER CENTER WEXNER CENTER COMMISSION INSPIRED BY WORK OF PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE DISFARMER Guitarist Bill Frisell, along with violinist Jenny Scheinman and lap steel guitar player Greg Leisz, perform the world premiere of Musical Portraits from Heber Spring: Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer Project on Saturday March 3 at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm at the Wexner Center. Inspired by the life, work, and subjects of eccentric photographer Mike Disfarmer, this production was commissioned by the Wexner Center. The haunting and stark photographs taken by Disfarmer in a small Bill Frisell / Photo: Jimmy Katz Arkansas town in the 1940s and 1950s are now widely admired works of outsider art. Using these as a starting point, Frisell will echo their timeless, captivating quality by balancing evocative atmospherics and traditional American musical forms to create his suite inspired by Disfarmer. Along with violinist Scheinman and lap steel guitar player Leisz, these compositions draw in part on traditional Ozark fiddle music (Disfarmer was an avid fiddler himself). During the performance, projected images of Disfarmer's portraits will further illuminate Frisell's musical perspectives on this fascinating character. The New York Times described Frisell’s music in this way: “It's hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he's found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Eight Cousins by Louisa M. Alcott</H1>
Eight Cousins by Louisa M. Alcott Eight Cousins by Louisa M. Alcott Prepared by David Reed [email protected] or [email protected] Eight Cousins by Louisa M. Alcott Preface The Author is quite aware of the defects of this little story, many of which were unavoidable, as it first appeared serially. But, as Uncle Alec's experiment was intended to amuse the young folks, rather than suggest educational improvements for the consideration of the elders, she trusts that these shortcomings will be overlooked by the friends of the Eight Cousins, and she will try to make amends in a second volume, which shall attempt to show The Rose in Bloom. L.M.A. page 1 / 344 Chapter 1 - Two Girls Rose sat all alone in the big best parlor, with her little handkerchief laid ready to catch the first tear, for she was thinking of her troubles, and a shower was expected. She had retired to this room as a good place in which to be miserable; for it was dark and still, full of ancient furniture, sombre curtains, and hung all around with portraits of solemn old gentlemen in wigs, severe-nosed ladies in top-heavy caps, and staring children in little bob-tailed coats or short-waisted frocks. It was an excellent place for woe; and the fitful spring rain that pattered on the window-pane seemed to sob, "Cry away: I'm with you." Rose really did have some cause to be sad; for she had no mother, and had lately lost her father also, which left her no home but this with her great-aunts.

THE GREAT FLOOD Film by Bill Morrison, Music by Bill Frisell An Icarus Films Release “Sublime!” –The New York Times Theatrical Premiere January 8, 2014 at IFC Center, N.Y.C. and January 24, 2014 at Downtown Independent, L.A. Followed by engagements nationwide Contact: (718) 488-8900 www.IcarusFilms.com Serious documentaries are good for you. LOGLINE The Great Flood is a film-music collaboration by Bill Morrison and Bill Frisell based on, and inspired by, the catastrophic Mississippi River Flood of 1927 and the ensuing transformation of American society. SYNOPSIS The Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history. In the spring of 1927, the river broke out of its banks in 145 places and inundated 27,000 square miles to a depth of up to 30 feet. Part of it enduring legacy was the mass exodus of displaced sharecroppers. Musically, the “Great Migration” of rural southern blacks to Northern cities saw the Delta Blues electrified and reinterpreted as the Chicago Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock and Roll. Using minimal text and no spoken dialog, filmmaker Bill Morrison and composer/guitarist Bill Frisell have created a powerful portrait of a seminal moment in American history through a collection of silent images matched to a searing original soundtrack. Music performed by Bill Frisell, Guitar; Ron Miles, Trumpet; Tony Scherr, Bass; Guitar Kenny Wollesen, Drums. ABOUT THE FILM The Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history. In the spring of 1927, the river broke out of its earthen embankments in 145 places and inundated 27,000 square miles.
