Programmatoelichting Traurig Wie Der Tod En-US Program notes: Traurig wie der Tod I had been planning for some years to compose a piece for large chorus and orchestra - I had visions of an 'enormous space in sound' and a work of considerable duration. In 2014, the chance arrived. The original title was Elysium: the residence of the Greek gods after their earthly life. When the moment came to actually turn my plans into deeds (the summer of 2014) I seemed to have changed my mind. Profound events such as the deterioration of the health of my mother, but also the disaster involving flight MH17 above Ukraine, were enough reason for me to throw away all the sketches I'd made up to that moment and to begin again. In Die Chinesische Flöte (1907) by Hans Bethge (1876-1946), I found poems that were more in sync with my new plans. The poems are characterized by simple metaphors and especially by a somber content. I have chosen five poems which fit withi the layout of a connected cycle. These are German reinterpretations of ancient Chinese poems by very diverse poets. In the end, composing the piece took up approximately half a year. The result, Traurig wie der Tod, is a song cycle consisting of five songs alternating with instrumental interludes, which eulogizes sorrow from various perspectives. In the first song, Mond und Menschen, a sharp distinction is made between the image of nature as stable and unchanging, compared with human beings as being confused and restless. At the end of this song the music accelerates and leads to the first orchestral interlude. The second song, Die Einsame is about the sorrow and pain of someone who is not near her loved one. After an orchestral eruption, the third song Eine Junger Dichter denkt an die Geliebte is brought back to one stanza in an extremely contrasting idiom. After yet another orchestral interruption, the fourth and fifth songs follow each other directly. The fourth song, Verzweiflung, is a reflection of the second. It's about the sorrow of tedium in confinement. The fifth song, Das Los des Menschen, has the singularity of our existence as its subject. Existence is like a sigh of the wind and the result of life is like a grave on which weeds grow. The first song is reflected here, both in the text and the music. The resulting structure of the piece is a palindrome: ABCBA. This applies as well to the musical style: the style of the first song uses the techniques of the twentieth century. Afterwards there's an abrupt modulation back to the 19th century, in order to end up in an archaic musical form from the early 18th century. Then the route is followed in the opposite direction. Theo Verbey (Delft, 1959) studied music theory from 1978 to 1984 and composition from 1982 to 1985 at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, with Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen. During his studies he received early recognition for his orchestration of Alban Berg's Piano Sonata op. 1. He has followed courses in Poland and Germany and he studied Digital Recording & Mixing at the College of Multimedia in Amsterdam in 1998. In 2001, he followed a course in choral conducting. His work is performed by both Dutch and international orchestras and ensembles. He has been a guest at such festivals as the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 1992 (Germany), and his music has been played at the Tanglewood New Music Festival (USA) in 1993, the Holland Festival in 1996, Ultima Festival Oslo (Norway) in 1996 , Music Tapei (Taiwan) in 1998, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK) in 1999, the Venice Biennale (Italy) in 2007, and the Cello Biennale in 2007 in Amsterdam. He has twice received commissions from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, for his compositions Alliage and LIED. He was composer-in-residence during the Brabants Orchestra's sixtieth anniversary season in 2009-2010, for which he wrote the work Orchestral Variations. The Dutch choreographer Regina van Berkel has based a number of ballets on the works of Theo Verbey. In 2012 Verbey composed a new piano work, La Malinconia for Van Berkel's ballet Simply Marvel, a commission from the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York City. Queen Beatrix chose Theo Verbey's completion of Stravinsky's 1919 Les Noces to be performed as a part of the Queens Day Concert. Since 1984, Theo Verbey has taught at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and since 1995 at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam of the Amsterdam School of the Arts. In 1992, and 1997, he was a member of the jury of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Composition Competition in Brussels, and in 1998 he was on the jury of the National Composition Contest in Taipei (Taiwan). He was a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Music in London in 2001, and composer-in-residence at the Europäisches Musikfest Münsterland. .

  • Completions and Reconstructions of Musical Works Part 4: Russian School by Stephen Barber Borodin Left His Opera Prince Igor
Completions and Reconstructions of Musical Works Part 4: Russian School by Stephen Barber Borodin left his opera Prince Igor unfinished and it was completed from sketches and memory by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. A scene by scene account of their contributions is available here. (Rimsky-Korsakov’s role in making performing editions of the work of his compatriots cannot be overestimated, though he freely recomposed and rearranged in a way even the boldest of modern scholars would hesitate to do.) This is the standard version, with recordings by Oskar Danon (Eloquence) and Mark Ermler (Melodiya) among others. Some other recordings omit the third act, which is mostly by Glazunov. Valery Gergiev recorded a new reconstruction (Philips). This is based on a fresh examination of all the sources; it takes into account an unpublished vocal score by Pavel Lamm, which reverses the order of the first two acts and has some other changes, and it also has additional material by Yuri Faliek. Another new edition, by Dmitri Tcherniakov and the conductor Gianandrea Noseda, was mounted and recorded by the Metropolitan opera (DG DVD). Borodin also did not complete his third symphony, or rather, he did not write it all down. Two movements were reconstructed by Glazunov, partly from memory. There are numerous recordings, including Loris Tjeknavorian (RCA) and Neeme Järvi (DG). Mussorgsky worked on many operatic projects but completed few of them. He left two versions of Boris Godunov: the 1869 original and his revision of 1872, with extra scenes but also cuts. In practice, most productions are conflated, drawing on both versions, making cuts, moving scenes and otherwise reorganizing the work.

  • Mad About Mozart
ABOUT THE MUSIC Mad about Mozart Maybe our classical music culture has gone mad about Mozart, but can we be sure he would be mad about us? About this program in the concert series, he would probably say: ‘that’s more like it – they’re playing two pieces of new music. Pity I couldn’t write something myself for the occasion. They had to dust off that old symphony of mine!’ Mozart also might have commented, on hearing the two pieces with a string quartet as soloists: ‘If I had known it could be done so well I would have tried it myself!’ Musicians are apt to want to play pieces again, especially the ones written for them, and especially if the public liked them too. Something like this motive is to be spotted here: Schaduw by Verbey is linked with the Brodsky Quartet, whose former leader, Andrew Haveron, is now a Sydney Symphony Orchestra concertmaster. And the Goldner Quartet, tonight’s soloists, gave the first performance of The Rave and the Nightingale, and have played it since. VERBEY Schaduw (2002) About the composer… Theo Verbey, born in 1959, is a Dutch composer. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and his principal composition teachers were Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen. While still a student he achieved recognition for his orchestral arrangement SIMON VAN BOXTEL of Alban Berg’s Opus 1 Piano Sonata, the first of Verbey’s numerous instrumentations of other composers’ music. He has completed Berg’s instrumentation of his Lyric Suite for string quartet, and – with the approval of Stravinsky’s heirs – completed the version Stravinsky’s began of Les Noces including pianola and cimbaloms.
