Scheurleer Daniël François Scheurleer werd op 13 november 1855 geboren in Den Haag, waar zijn vader firmant was van het sinds 1804 in Den Haag gevestigde bankiershuis Scheurleer & Zoonen. De jonge Daniël trad bij zijn vaders firma in dienst, nadat hij in Dresden aan het ‘Handelslehranstalt’ een opleiding had gevolgd en bij de Dresdner Bank een stage had doorlopen. Na het overlijden van zijn vader in 1882 werd hij, nog slechts 26 jaar oud, directeur van het familiebedrijf. De firma hield zich vooral bezig met vermogensbeheer van welgestelde Hagenaars uit de hogere kringen. De schrijver Louis Couperus bankierde zijn leven lang bij Scheurleer & Zoonen. Couperus en zijn vrouw verkeerden op vriendschappelijke voet met de heer en mevrouw Scheurleer. In zijn testament bepaalde Couperus dat het vermogensbeheer van de stichting die hij met dat testament in het leven riep, zou worden gevoerd door ‘de tegenwoordige en toekomstige individueele leden van de firma Scheurleer & Zoonen’. -

Met enige trots presenteren we nu onze vierde Complete Catalogus 2017. In een wereld waar de grenzen van de nieuw gecomponeerde muziek continu verlegd worden, streven we als muziekuitgevers naar een eclectische catalogus, waarin kwaliteit, eigenheid en artistiek ex- cellentie onze criteria zijn. Deze catalogus bevat vele nieuwe titels van onze huiscompo- nisten, van Robert Zuidam tot Paul M. van Brugge, in omgekeerde alfabetische volgorde. Nieuw in ons fonds zijn componisten Annelies Van Parys (1974) en Aart Strootman (1987). Van Parys onderzoekt in haar muziek akoestische klankmogelijkheden, terwijl Strootman naar een sound zoekt die aansluiting vind bij de popmuziek – een stroming die leeft binnen zijn generatie. Ook op het terrein van de educatie presenteren we twee nieu- we componisten. Monique Krüs componeert muziek die door de gekozen thematiek en artistieke niveau het educatieve aspect overstijgt en hiermee een frisse aanwinst is voor het genre van de familievoorstelling. -

Seizoens brochure 16/17 Koninklijk Conservatorium Royal Conservatoire Seizoens brochure 16/17 Koninklijk Conservatorium Royal Conservatoire 2 Wel kom Hierbij presenteer ik u met trots onze seizoensbrochure 2016-2017. Dit seizoen viert het Koninklijk Conservatorium twee jubilea. 60 jaar geleden werd de School voor Jong Talent opgericht. Dit is onze unieke vooropleiding op het gebied van dans, muziek en beeldende kunst, voor jonge talenten vanaf 10 jaar. Door het seizoen zullen er tal van activitei- ten in het teken staan van dit jubileum, met als hoogtepunt de jubileumvoor- stelling Traditie en Vernieuwing op 13 februari in het Zuiderstrandtheater. Dit jubileumjaar is ook aangegrepen om een internationaal netwerk op te zetten waarin toonaangevende vooropleidingen uit verschillende Europese landen zich verenigen. Het andere jubileum geldt voor het fameuze Spring Festival dat de afdeling Compositie voor de 50e keer organiseert. Hoogtepunt tijdens dit festival is een serie concerten op 5, 6 en 8 april van De Materie, een grootschalig stuk van Nederlands beroemdste componist, tevens alumnus en docent van ons conservatorium Louis Andriessen. Deze concertreeks is een samenwer- king met het Asko|Schönberg en Slagwerk Den Haag, en is de eerste grote productie in het kader van de Ensemble Academie. Naast bovengenoemde ensembles zijn ook Calefax, Ensemble Klang, het New European Ensemble en de zalen Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ en Korzo Theater, partners van dit nieuwe en belangrijke initiatief. Ook dit jaar staat opnieuw in het teken van samenwerkingen. De samenwerking met het Gergiev Festival, waarin onze studenten met die van Codarts een concert geven o.l.v. de maestro, is onderdeel van een meer- jarenafspraak. -

Completions and Reconstructions of Musical Works Part 4: Russian School by Stephen Barber Borodin left his opera Prince Igor unfinished and it was completed from sketches and memory by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. A scene by scene account of their contributions is available here. (Rimsky-Korsakov’s role in making performing editions of the work of his compatriots cannot be overestimated, though he freely recomposed and rearranged in a way even the boldest of modern scholars would hesitate to do.) This is the standard version, with recordings by Oskar Danon (Eloquence) and Mark Ermler (Melodiya) among others. Some other recordings omit the third act, which is mostly by Glazunov. Valery Gergiev recorded a new reconstruction (Philips). This is based on a fresh examination of all the sources; it takes into account an unpublished vocal score by Pavel Lamm, which reverses the order of the first two acts and has some other changes, and it also has additional material by Yuri Faliek. Another new edition, by Dmitri Tcherniakov and the conductor Gianandrea Noseda, was mounted and recorded by the Metropolitan opera (DG DVD). Borodin also did not complete his third symphony, or rather, he did not write it all down. Two movements were reconstructed by Glazunov, partly from memory. There are numerous recordings, including Loris Tjeknavorian (RCA) and Neeme Järvi (DG). Mussorgsky worked on many operatic projects but completed few of them. He left two versions of Boris Godunov: the 1869 original and his revision of 1872, with extra scenes but also cuts. In practice, most productions are conflated, drawing on both versions, making cuts, moving scenes and otherwise reorganizing the work. -

After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. He was something of a prodigy pianist, giving recitals starting at age six, and at eighteen won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. There he studied piano with Frederic Cliffe and composition with Sir Charles Stanford. Benjamin served in World War I beginning in 1915, initially fighting in the trenches and then transferring to the Royal Flying Corps as a gunner. Shot down over Germany in 1918, he spent the rest of the war in the prison camp at Rüheleben. Benjamin returned briefly to Australia following the war to teach piano at the New South Wales Conservatory, but resumed composition studies in England in 1921. His first published work, the Pastoral Fantasy for string quartet, won the Carnegie Award in 1924. In 1927 he was appointed professor of composition and piano at the Royal College, where Benjamin Britten, among others, was one of his piano students. -
Individual Bios Peter Brunt Peter Brunt Studied at The
Osiris Trio: Individual Bios Peter Brunt Peter Brunt studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Davina van Wely and Herman Krebbers and continued his studies with Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School in New York and Sándor Végh in Salzburg. In 1981 he won the Netherlands Violin Competition ‘Oskar Back’ and went on to win various prizes at other international competitions. Peter has performed extensively as a soloist with numerous orchestras including The Hague Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. William Jeths wrote his violin concerto Glenz specially for Peter, who recorded it with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, conducted by Lev Markiz. He has also been very active in the richly diverse Dutch ensemble scene, including the contemporary music ensembles Asko|Schönberg and Nieuw Ensemble. From 1984 he was principal second violinist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, leaving the orchestra in 1987 in order to dedicate himself to his piano trio’s flourishing international career. Since then he has been a guest concertmaster with various orchestras, including the Basel Kammerorchester, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht. A founding member of the acclaimed Osiris Trio, Peter has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Kölner Philharmonie and the Wigmore Hall and has recorded numerous CDs, with repertoire ranging from Haydn to newly commissioned works for the trio. He has also performed as a duo with the electric guitarist Wiek Hijmans for many years, focusing on improvisation and crossover repertoire. Peter teaches violin as principal study as well as a specialised piano trio Master’s degree programme at the conservatoires of The Hague and Amsterdam. -

As the figurehead of new Dutch music, Tsoupaki connects her compositions to everyday life and contributes to national events. On Human In 1998 Calliope Tsoupaki Rights Day – December 10, 2018 – Song (Piraeus, Greece, 1963) for Life and Death was performed, a new moved to the Netherlands to solo piece for pan flute. -

ABOUT THE MUSIC Mad about Mozart Maybe our classical music culture has gone mad about Mozart, but can we be sure he would be mad about us? About this program in the concert series, he would probably say: ‘that’s more like it – they’re playing two pieces of new music. Pity I couldn’t write something myself for the occasion. They had to dust off that old symphony of mine!’ Mozart also might have commented, on hearing the two pieces with a string quartet as soloists: ‘If I had known it could be done so well I would have tried it myself!’ Musicians are apt to want to play pieces again, especially the ones written for them, and especially if the public liked them too. Something like this motive is to be spotted here: Schaduw by Verbey is linked with the Brodsky Quartet, whose former leader, Andrew Haveron, is now a Sydney Symphony Orchestra concertmaster. And the Goldner Quartet, tonight’s soloists, gave the first performance of The Rave and the Nightingale, and have played it since. VERBEY Schaduw (2002) About the composer… Theo Verbey, born in 1959, is a Dutch composer. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and his principal composition teachers were Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen. While still a student he achieved recognition for his orchestral arrangement SIMON VAN BOXTEL of Alban Berg’s Opus 1 Piano Sonata, the first of Verbey’s numerous instrumentations of other composers’ music. He has completed Berg’s instrumentation of his Lyric Suite for string quartet, and – with the approval of Stravinsky’s heirs – completed the version Stravinsky’s began of Les Noces including pianola and cimbaloms.
