Low- and middle- income countries are experiencing an obesity epidemic. There is growing evidence that the epidemic is on the increase in urban settings of developing countries. However, there is scanty information on the magnitude of this epidemic and its correlates in rural settings. The objective of the current study was to establish levels of overweight/obesity and its correlates in rural areas of Zambia. Designing interventions based on the correlates for overweight/obesity to reduce its prevalence may in turn lead to a reduction in the prevalence of hypertension. Methods: Cross sectional studies using a modified WHO Stepwise questionnaire were conducted. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors that were associated with overweight/obesity. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and their 95% confidence intervals are reported. -

1.0 CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION According to the Central Statistical Office (2000:45), Lufwanyama District has the highest level of adult illiteracy In the Copperbelt Province. This situation has immensely contributed to the underdevelopment of the district. It is this scenario that prompted the researcher to investigate factors which were affecting the provision of adult literacy. This was done with the view that adult literacy would invaluably enable adult illiterates to pursue adult education. Adult literacy is thus the beginning point and gateway to adult education which is defined as a …process whereby persons who no longer attend school on a regular and full-time basis… undertake sequential and organized activities with the conscious intention of bringing about changes in information, knowledge, understanding or skills, appreciation and attitudes; or for the purpose of identifying and solving personal or community problems” (Lowe, 1970:3). Therefore, to give direction to this study, this chapter opens by presenting the background of the problem, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives of the study and research questions. Other issues discussed in the chapter include the significance and rationale of the study, limitations encountered, operational definitions, organization of the report and a summary of the chapter. ORGANISATION OF THE REST OF THE REPORT Chapter one has covered the following aspects: background to the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives and research questions, significance of the study, limitations of the study, operational definition of terms, abbreviations, organization and summary. Chapter Two of the report contains the literature review, which has been sub-sectioned as introduction, literacy and its importance, origins and development of Adult Literacy in Zambia and its deficiencies, public perception of Adult Literacy and summary of the chapter. -

Box 31908 Lusaka e-mail: [email protected] website: www.zamstats.gov.zm Designed and Published by Desktop Publishing Unit, CSO – Lusaka Preface The 2000 Census of Population and Housing was undertaken from 16th October to 15th November, 2000. This was the fourth census since Independence in 1964. The other three were carried out in 1969, 1980 and 1990. The 2000 Census operations were undertaken with the use of Grade 11 pupils as enumerators, Primary School Teachers as supervisors, Professionals from within Central Statistical Office and other government departments being as Trainers and Management Staff. Professionals and Technical Staff of the Central Statistical Office were assigned more technical and professional tasks. Summary results are presented in this report. These include population counts up to ward level. Growth rates and densities are also shown. Detailed analytical and specialised reports show other indicators such as life expectancy, child mortality, fertility, migration, housing indicators, education, demographic structures and economic activity. The success of the Census accrues to the dedicated support and involvement of a large number of institutions and individuals. My sincere thanks go to Co-operating partners namely the British Government, the Japanese Government, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Norwegian Government, the Dutch Government, the Finnish Government, the Danish Government, the German Government, University of Michigan, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Canadian Government for providing financial, material and technical assistance which enabled the Central Statistical Office carry out the Census.
