THE SCIENTIFIC PERSONALITY OF ANTÓNIO GIÃO ABSTRACT This Dissertation aims to be the first biography of a scientist fallen into oblivion, and to explain how he was forgotten. It starts by the postulation of pragmatics of scientific discourse as a methodology, and reviews pertinent literature on scientific biographies. His career starts as an independent young student, writing to scholars and attending scientific meetings unconcerned with his masters. Strasbourg and Bergen are instances of his early maturity, linked in the former with early papers in French and in German, some of them as reports of scientific events; in the latter, in the conception of mathematical methods published as three books in Paris. Here, the first major conflict will take place, enacting his isolation. A fruit of his loneliness will be an inconsequent travel along Phenomenological Physics. War and”exile” in his native village lead him swiftly towards Fundamental Physics, expressed in his return to Paris and through publication in Portuguese journals. A lifeline suddenly interrupted in 1951, when the rupture with his mentor, Louis de Broglie, occurred. Gião‟s start-over in Meteorology begins in 1952 through an invention; the absence of success of this device merges unnoticed among his large scientific production. These are the Italy years, and Piccardi‟s experiment appears as a new subject in his research. Return to Portugal in 1960 is the moment of eclectic intervention: – he teaches two chairs in the Faculty of Sciences; 5 – there, however, conflicts take place, towards the students and colleagues; – he heads the”Centro de Cálculo Científico” (Scientific Calculus Center) since 1963, thus being – both the Centre and the Director – the pioneers of Informatics in Portugal; – the journal of his Centro coincides from there onwards with his scientific profile. -

Fernando Pessoa Novas modalidades para a literatura de viagens Um dos traços que melhor definem a natureza dos textos de viagens é o seu hibri- dismo, que lhes determina o lugar de fronteira em que normalmente se situam. Nesse particular, Asas que naufragam, de Sarmento de Beires, evidencia essa essência em várias dimensões, a começar desde logo pela materialidade do próprio livro editado, que contém desdobráveis com representações ortodrómicas, boletins de voo, fotografias várias, rela- tórios, etc., a par do texto narrativo propriamente dito, definido pelo narrador umas vezes como «impressões»2, outras como «diário» ou «jornal desordenado»3, «livro de confis- sões»4 e até «laudas»5. INFLUÊNCIA DO AERO CLUB DE PORTUGAL E DA REVISTA DO AR FERNANDO DA ROCHA RIBEIRO Tese orientada pelo Prof. Doutor António Ventura e coorientada pelo Prof. Doutor Luís Fraga, especialmente elaborada para a obtenção do grau de Mestre em HISTÓRIA MILITAR. 2016 2 RESUMO A Força Aérea Portuguesa nasceu após um processo político e militar muito complexo, com muitos apoiantes e muitos antagonistas. O seu nascimento foi a resultante da evolução da aviação em Portugal, das experiências acumuladas dos intrépidos aviadores portugueses durante os raides aéreos dos anos 20 e 30 do século passado, do conhecimento operacional e do reconhecimento da importância do Poder Aéreo, principalmente após a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Em todo este processo, desde os finais de 1909, a evolução da Aviação em Portugal foi acompanhada pelo Aero Club de Portugal. Esta Instituição aglutinou os entusiastas da “Causa do Ar”, civis e militares, constituindo-se uma entidade onde existia um vasto conhecimento técnico sobre Aeronáutica e onde se destacaram vários “Homens” com capacidade para impulsionar, como grupo de pressão, a criação do terceiro ramo das Forças Armadas Portuguesas em 1952, de que se destacou o então Coronel Humberto Delgado. De uma forma concertada, a “Revista do Ar” teve um papel determinante na divulgação dos ideais da “Causa do Ar”. It is the work of the BBAC Records and Awards Subcommittee to make the mechanics of verification as simple and convenient as possible, and unlike some other countries, this service is provided by volunteers at no charge. The Sporting Handbook aims to bring together in one publication most of the information necessary for the administration of records and other BBAC awards. In addition to the information presented here, the latest versions of the FAI/CIA Sporting Code (General Section and Section 1: Aerostats) and the list of World Records should be consulted. These can be obtained from the FAI web site at www.fai.org. The Silver, Gold and Diamond Awards system, which began in the United Kingdom, has now been adopted by the CIA, the section of the FAI that governs ballooning on a worldwide basis.
