The South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park is the finest preserved stretch of European coastline, covering over 100 km, from Porto Covo in the Alentejo, to Burgau in the Algarve. The Park includes various unique species of animal and plant life, and is visited by many zoologists and botanists from all parts of the world.

The landscape is marked by steep cliffs, represented in the Park's logo, that have been given various forms and colouring by centuries of erosion.

Many bird species can be seen, such as rare fishing eagles. The rarest species is the white stork, given that this is the only place in the world where they build their nests in the seashore rocks. Another rarity is the otter, since this is the only place in Portugal and one of the last places in Europe where it is possible to find otters in a marine habitat. Plant life includes the largest number of priority species in Portugal, including unique indigenous species such as Biscutella vicentina or Plantago Almogravensis.

The beaches, are highly popular amongst surfers, and are the finest in the country. There is a tremendous variety of beaches, including long stretches of sand and small beaches nestled between the cliffs and rocks. In the small borough of Boavista dos Pinheiros in Odemira in a quiet street, there is a restaurant called the Tasca “O Bernardo”, that attracts clients from all over the country. Run by Elisabeth Marcelino, German by birth, but her family worked on the land, is installed in a typical Alentejo dwelling and is divided into three spaces: the main room, with rustic tiles, the covered patio with the floor in wooden planks and the terrace, where most of the year the sun shines that characterises this part of the country. For the meat there is Alentejo tenderloin steaks, grilled plumas or secretos, Portuguese style meat, carne de porco à alentejana, grilled sirloin steak with green pepper or fresh mushrooms. There are no vegetarian dishes on the menu but if anyone requests, the chef will concoct some appetisers that are as good as any of the others.

Desserts not to be missed, in addition to the conventual desserts, are dark chocolate mousse and ice cream with flambé cherries. A wine cellar with wines of the region and some from outside the region. Service efficient and friendly!

Alcácer do Sal The Alentejo Coast

The Alentejo coast stretches from the mouth of the River Sado to Zambujeira do Mar, and will surprise you for being such a well preserved coastal area, with small havens of sun and beach, hospitable people and good cuisine.

From Troia to Sines You can reach Troia via Alcácer do Sal or by ferry from Setúbal, crossing the River Sado estuary. On arrival, the Troia peninsula offers much to be explored. You can play golf, have surfing lessons, walk along the beach or watch the dolphins. You can also wander about to discover the region’s cultural heritage, such as the Carrasqueira village on stilts and the Troia Roman Ruins which actually reveal how the area was already rich in natural resources two thousand years ago.

After Troia, Comporta is a much appreciated spot for a family beach outing and has some good restaurants. This is a paddy field area, so rice-based dishes are an unmissable specialty.

Until Sines, the coast is an unbroken strip of sand, with pleasant beaches such as Pinheirinho and Galé. In Melides and Santo André, depending on your wishes and preferences, you may choose between the sea beaches and the lagoons. These are great places for canoeing and windsurfing.

Sines is one of the most important cities on the Alentejo coast and is an industrial port and a cape as well, making it a natural stopping point for visitors to the region. A traditional fishing port, it was here that Vasco da Gama, the great navigator, was born. Who knows, his travels may have inspired the Festival Músicas do Mundo, the world music festival that is held here annually in early summer.

From Sines to Zambujeira do Mar From the port of Sines, the natural sandy paradise changes and the smooth bays alternate with more scenic beaches with rock formations. Among these, the São Torpes, Morgável and Vale Figueiros beaches deserve a longer stop with the family. The great wealth of the subaquatic landscape of this area is also much appreciated for diving.

Along the tracks to the beach, you will find small places to eat fish in little villages overlooking the sea, like Porto Covo, a picturesque fishing village that welcomes you to a pretty square surrounded by low houses. The beach is very convivial and from its small port, with its colourful boats, you can reach the island of Pessegueiro opposite, visible out to sea.

Continue to Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the mouth of the River Mira. We suggest exploring around the ocean beach and the river by boat or canoe, with friends. You can even go up river to Odemira.

Almograve, amongst the cliffs and red dunes, is a sanctuary and one of the most appreciated beaches for surfing and body boarding. You can walk through the countryside to the beach from the town, past million-year old dunes and rock formations.

Further south, the Sardão Cape is a wild spot, but also a breathtaking lookout point over the jagged coast. It is the only place in the world where the white stork nests on the cliffs.

This inspiring tour continues to Zambujeira do Mar, with other beaches to be discovered. Here, like along the whole coast, surfers will find perfect waves to refine their style and have fun.

But the Alentejo coastline is not only beaches. To the south of Sines, you enter the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (Southwestern Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park), abounding in hiking and mountain bike trails to choose from. The various marked trails along the 450km which make up the Vicentina Route, between Santiago do Cacém and São Vicente Cape, are a good way to get to know the region, come into contact with the everyday life of its residents and have other experiences of the local customs and traditions.

Odemira Odemira

This beautiful name is said to have originated from the Arab words wad (meaning river) and Emir, leading to the name Odemira in Portuguese.

Despite being conquered from the Moors by the first Portuguese king D. Afonso Henriques, the town was not granted a charter until 1257, in the reign of D. Afonso III, when it was populated on a definitive basis.

Odemira has not managed to preserve any really important remains from this historic past. Nothing is left, for example, of the castle that once stood at the town's highest point, not even the name of the street - Rua do Castelo - which used to lead there.

This has been rechristened Rua Sarmento de Beires, in homage to the Portuguese aviator born in the town and who, in 1924, took off from Vila Nova de Milfontes, in a small Bréguet aeroplane, heading for Macau, where he finally came to rest some 115 hours later, after having flown more than 16,000 kilometres!

In one of the town's gardens, there is a curious painted statue erected in memory of one of the region's other famous personalities: Damiano, the chemist who wrote a book in the fifteenth century teaching people how to play chess!

Odemira's charm lies in its location on top of a small hill, forming a kind of amphitheatre with its brilliant white houses facing towards the river Mira. The source of the river is in the Serra do Caldeirão, but from this point on it is navigable as far as its mouth at Vila Nova de Milfontes, over a stretch of roughly 30 kilometres, a most beautiful setting for sailing, rowing or canoeing.

The region has taken great care to preserve its handicrafts and various craftsmen can be found here making baskets, furniture, pottery and hand-woven fabrics.

The whole of this southern strip of the Portuguese coast, running from the town of Sines to Cape St Vincent in the Algarve, forms part of the Nature Park of Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, a region that contains rare species of flora and fauna and the only place in the world where the white swan can be found nesting on sea cliffs.
