    IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

Professor Valdes's critique of this conflation in American law was balanced by a chapter in which he favorably compared Native American cultural approaches to InterSEXionality2 with Euro-American ones. According to Valdes: [T]he Native American example not only disproves the Euro- American sex/gender system's sense of essentialism, it also can spark our imagination and expand our horizons as we strive to envision post-conflationary and non-conflationary relations that, ultimately, are more in accord with the self-professed ideals and values of this nation and its laws.3 In this article, I take issue with the suggestion that the Native American model Valdes describes is a more desirable, more liberatory alternative, more consistent with the values embodied in American law.

Last year we celebrated the tenth anniversary of a national movement to change the face of television: the historic signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition1 and the four networks. At that time we lauded the networks for incremental progress in diversifying their workforces in front and behind the camera. This year the networks, while more representative of our multicultural nation than they were a decade ago, are in need of reaffirming their commitments to including Latinos in creative positions and procurement opportunities. All but one of these networks – CBS – received either “Ds” or “Fs” in at least one of eight categories of evaluation. This report card summarizes progress and shortfalls of the networks’ diversity efforts during the 2009-2010 television season. Networks earn overall diversity performance grades, as well as specific grades based on their employment of Latino actors in primetime scripted and reality programming, Latino writers, producers and directors in primetime programming, and Latino entertainment executives. Specific grades are also assigned for program development, procurement and network commitment to diversity and transparency. Grades are based on information that the networks provide NLMC pursuant to the Memoranda of Understanding. Grades are weighted according to the number of weekly primetime programming hours per network.

    ADDITIONAL PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES OLIVER BOKELBERG (Director of Photography) Oliver Bokelberg’s cinematography experience includes shooting award winning features with critically acclaimed directors, including his most recent collaboration with Tom McCarthy on Fox Searchlight’s Win Win starring Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan. Bokelberg and McCarthy also worked together on The Station Agent, which captured the Audience Award at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, as well as The Visitor, which was released by Overture Films after an intense sale during the 2007 Toronto Film Festival. Director Andy Tennant is another longtime collaborator of Bokelberg’s, having worked together on The Bounty Hunter starring Jennifer Aniston, in addition to two television pilots, “Operating Instructions” for USA and “Thunderballs” for SpikeTV. Bokelberg also recently shot the pilot for ABC’s “Devious Maids”, directed by Paul McGuigan, NBC’s “Up All Night”, directed by Jim Griffiths, as well as the pilot and subsequent seasons of “Scandal” for ABC. Bokelberg received his second ASC Nomination for his work on the NBC television series “My Own Worst Enemy” starring Christian Slater. He was previously nominated for an ASC Award for his work on the Frank Darabont directed pilot, “Raines” in 2008. CHASE HARLAN (Production Designer) Chase Harlan has done a wide variety of work in the design industries including films, TV shows, commercials, music videos, and tradeshow exhibits. For the past 10 years Chase has worked on HBO’s hit show “Entourage,” and a long list of other entertainment clientele. He is currently riding a wave of successful projects in Hollywood, and still manages to rock a mean guitar for his kids.
