IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense. -

The cast discussed the series’ end at a Joonbug.com Fashion Week event on February 13, saying Betty’s impact on television will prove more than just a fad. “It sounds so corny, but there is sort of a message that comes along with Betty that hasn’t been on TV in a while,” Ana Ortiz (Hilda) says. “It’s really uplifting and [about] rooting for the underdog, but also tackling social issues. We tackled health care, we tackled single motherhood, so I think there’s a long legacy with Betty.” Costar Tony Plana, who plays Betty’s father Ignacio, says the titular A look back at the "King of Pop" Michael character has had an “iconoclastic” impact on television thanks to Jackson's superstar career. the series’ comment on feminine and ethnic issues. “In terms of content, and in terms of social and cultural impact, I don’t think there’s ever been a series like it, maybe since All in the Family,” he says. The movie Forrest Gump may have put the city squarely on the tourist map, but nothing changed the face of Savannah more than the 1994 publication of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The impact has been unprecedented, bringing in millions in revenue as thousands flock to see the sights from the bestseller and the 1997 movie directed by Clint Eastwood. In fact, Savannah tourism has nearly doubled since publication of what’s known locally as The Book. Even after all this time, some locals still earn their living off The Book’s fallout, hawking postcards, walking tours, T-shirts, and in some cases their own careers, as in the case of the Lady Chablis, the drag queen in The Book who played herself in the film. “What’s special about Savannah?” we asked an old-timer. “Why, here we even have water fountains for dogs,” he said. The free spirit, the passion, and even the decadence of Savannah resemble those of Key West or New Orleans rather than the Bible Belt down-home “Red State” interior of Georgia. In that sense, it’s as different from the rest of the state as New York City is from upstate New York. Savannah—pronounce it with a drawl—conjures up all the clichéd images of the Deep South: live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, stately antebellum mansions, mint juleps sipped on the veranda, magnolia trees, peaceful marshes, horse-drawn carriages, ships sailing up the river (though no longer laden with cotton), and evenCOPYRIGHTED General Sherman, no one’s favorite MATERIAL military hero here. -

Grand Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91105 Tel: (626) 792-6462 Fax: (626) 792-6051 2010 NLMC Network Diversity Report Card Narrative The National Latino Media Council (NLMC) regrets that this annual diversity report card reflects a decline in Latino diversity at the four major television networks – ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. Last year we celebrated the tenth anniversary of a national movement to change the face of television: the historic signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition1 and the four networks. At that time we lauded the networks for incremental progress in diversifying their workforces in front and behind the camera. This year the networks, while more representative of our multicultural nation than they were a decade ago, are in need of reaffirming their commitments to including Latinos in creative positions and procurement opportunities. All but one of these networks – CBS – received either “Ds” or “Fs” in at least one of eight categories of evaluation. This report card summarizes progress and shortfalls of the networks’ diversity efforts during the 2009-2010 television season. Networks earn overall diversity performance grades, as well as specific grades based on their employment of Latino actors in primetime scripted and reality programming, Latino writers, producers and directors in primetime programming, and Latino entertainment executives. Specific grades are also assigned for program development, procurement and network commitment to diversity and transparency. Grades are based on information that the networks provide NLMC pursuant to the Memoranda of Understanding. Grades are weighted according to the number of weekly primetime programming hours per network.
