May 2017 RESEARCH SUPPORT The Academy’s library team provides a document-delivery service for residential fellows and Distinguished Visitors. Books and other media are normally delivered within two to three days, depending on the complexity of research and access to materials. Books not obtainable from Berlin libraries can be ordered via inter-library loan and will arrive within two to three weeks (express delivery within 72 hrs). To order a book or materials from external libraries, fellows fill out a book request online. The librarian will supply the link to this order form. The Academy also offers research support to fellows in their navigation of the Berlin library and archive landscape. The following pages offer information about Berlin’s non- lending libraries and archives. The Academy’s librarian can also answer research-facility questions and help prepare visits to archives. State Library (Staatsbibliothek – Stabi) The easiest and quickest way is the search via the StaBiKat, the online catalogue of the Staatsbibliothek (http://stabikat.de). Usually, Stabi books can be delivered within two days. We also have a special loan condition concerning books published before the 1950s and after 1850. We can borrow them, as long as they are not reference or rare books. In case the Stabi does not have the material you need, you will find the main catalogues and libraries listed below. Keep in mind that not all libraries have online catalogues that include all their holdings of books published before the 1990s (In these cases, I will check the old card-catalogues for you). 2. Helpful German Catalogues The online-catalogue for all Berlin and Brandenburg libraries including the university libraries is called Kooperativer Bibliotheksverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) http://digibib.kobv.de 1 May 2017 The national online-catalogue Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog (KVK) includes not only various German University libraries but also European and American libraries (Worldcat, Library of Congress) as well as internet bookshops (also in English): http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/kvk.html 3. Journals & Newspapers The archive for electronic journals (Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek) is a cooperation between 153 libraries, which consists of 10,000 titles of all academic disciplines. Access ranges from full access to an index of the articles only. Online catalogue: http://ezb.uni-regensburg.de/ ZDB is a database for serial titles, including holding information about journals and newspapers. It contains more than one million bibliographic records of periodicals from the sixteenth century onwards, from all countries, in all languages, held in German libraries. It does not contain table of contents or articles. Online catalogue: http://zdb-opac.de Newspapers at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Unlike journals, newspapers may not be borrowed from the Stabi and are located in the newspapers department: Address: Westhafenspeicher Opening hours Westhafenstr. 1 Mon – Fri 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 13353 Berlin (Wedding) Sat 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Phone: 266 3711/3721 PLEASE NOTE: The library service can retrieve articles most efficiently if you have all biographical details at the ready (author, title, journal title, vol., issue, publication dates, page numbers). The Stabi offers just a selection of journals with remote access. And for this, you need to have a personal library card. Therefore, if you want to browse journals online or search databases, then you have to go to the reading rooms of the Stabi. Articles from and links to major contemporary German newspapers: http://www.zeitung.de/ https://www.genios.de/ https://www.pressreader.com/ 4. Online Dissertations German universities have only recently begun to build up online archives of dissertations; the development of an overall archive is still in process (see university of Osnabrück via FU-Berlin).
