The river basin covers a diverse landscape from Blue Ridge Mountain headwaters to the expansive Charlotte metropolitan area, crossing much of the Piedmont region and including parts of the unusual geology and ecology in the sandy Uwharrie Mountains. Thirty-nine percent (39%) of all rivers and streams, and thirty-six percent (36%) of all lakes and reservoirs within the Yadkin River basin are listed as “impaired” by the NC Division of Water Quality (NC DWQ), meaning they fail to meet water quality standards established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and the NC DWQ. The Yadkin River is also known for its outstanding resource waters, primarily found in the Uwharrie National Forest in Montgomery County and the headwater tributaries of Wilkes and Surry Counties.

    Section C: Chapter 1 Current Water Quality Initiatives 1.1 Workshop Summaries In April 2002, five workshops were conducted by DWQ in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River basin at Elkin, Winston-Salem, Uwharrie, Salisbury and Fairview. There were 149 people in attendance representing a variety of interests. Figure C-1 presents an estimate of the percent of total attendance which represented various groups/interests, based on information recorded on attendance sheets. Figure C-2 presents the total attendance for each workshop by category. What local agencies or organizations should be involved in addressing the problems?     AN INVENTORY OF THE SIGNIFICANT NATURAL AREAS OF CABARRUS COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA 2002 In association with: Natural Heritage Advisory Committee for Cabarrus County Cabarrus Soil and Water Conservation District The Land Trust for Central North Carolina North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, Division of Parks and Recreation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Funding provided by the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners North Carolina Natural Heritage Trust Fund ABSTRACT This inventory of the natural areas, biological communities, and rare species of Cabarrus County was funded by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Trust Fund and the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners. This inventory identifies the most significant natural areas in the county, identifies their features, and documents all rare species of plants and animals associated with them. This inventory is intended to provide guidance for land use decisions by the county government, conservation and land management organizations, and interested citizens. The inventory was conducted in association with the Natural Heritage Advisory Committee for Cabarrus County, Cabarrus Soil and Water Conservation District, The Land Trust for Central North Carolina, and the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, between 1997 and 1999. The inventory identifies 14 sites of natural significance at the national, state, or regional level, as determined by the criteria established by the NC NHP.
