  • An Archaeological Inventory of Alamance County, North Carolina
AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVENTORY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA Alamance County Historic Properties Commission August, 2019 AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVENTORY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA A SPECIAL PROJECT OF THE ALAMANCE COUNTY HISTORIC PROPERTIES COMMISSION August 5, 2019 This inventory is an update of the Alamance County Archaeological Survey Project, published by the Research Laboratories of Anthropology, UNC-Chapel Hill in 1986 (McManus and Long 1986). The survey project collected information on 65 archaeological sites. A total of 177 archaeological sites had been recorded prior to the 1986 project making a total of 242 sites on file at the end of the survey work. Since that time, other archaeological sites have been added to the North Carolina site files at the Office of State Archaeology, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources in Raleigh. The updated inventory presented here includes 410 sites across the county and serves to make the information current. Most of the information in this document is from the original survey and site forms on file at the Office of State Archaeology and may not reflect the current conditions of some of the sites. This updated inventory was undertaken as a Special Project by members of the Alamance County Historic Properties Commission (HPC) and published in-house by the Alamance County Planning Department. The goals of this project are three-fold and include: 1) to make the archaeological and cultural heritage of the county more accessible to its citizens; 2) to serve as a planning tool for the Alamance County Planning Department and provide aid in preservation and conservation efforts by the county planners; and 3) to serve as a research tool for scholars studying the prehistory and history of Alamance County.

( b) The following paragraphs describe the three tiers of the State's waters. (i) Tier 1 - Existing instream water uses and the level of water quality necessary to protect the existing uses shall be maintained and protected. (ii) Tier 2 - Where the quality of the waters exceed levels necessary to support propagation of fish, shellfish, and wildlife and recreation in and on the water, that quality shall be maintained and protected unless the division finds, after full satisfaction of the intergovernmental coordination and public participation provisions of the division's continuing planning process, that allowing lower water quality is necessary to accommodate important economic or social development in the area in which the waters are located.

  • Roadless Rule Map & Fact Sheet
West Virginians for Public Lands The Roadless Rule in West Virginia The “Roadless Rule” was established by the US Forest Service in 2001 after an extensive inventory and mapping of undeveloped public lands. Today the Roadless Rule conserves 44.8 million acres in 37 states. There are 182,000 roadless acres among the three national forests within West Virginia. The Monongahela National Forest has the largest share at 162,000 acres, followed by the George Washington NF (15,700 ac) and the Jefferson NF (4,800 ac). The Monongahela National Forest has over 2,100 miles of roads. Nowhere in West Virginia is further than 3.2 miles as-the-crow-flies from a road. Roadless areas make up less than a fifth of the Monongahela National Forest and just over 1 percent of the state of West Virginia. Roadlessness is a rare and valuable quality for both recreation and wildlife. Roadless areas are often remote backcountry areas. In West Virginia, the vast majority of roadless areas are managed by the Forest Service for recreation and include some of the most iconic landscapes in the state: Roaring Plains, Seneca Creek, Cheat Mountain, Canaan Loop, Tea Creek, North Fork Mountain, and Hills Creek Falls. In many cases our roadless areas adjoin designated Wilderness Areas, creating larger intact ecosystems, providing greater recreation opportunity, and enhancing the “wild and wonderful” qualities of these regions. Dolly Sods, Otter Creek, and Cranberry Wilderness are surrounded by roadless areas. Logging is generally prohibited in roadless areas, but the Roadless Rule does contain practical exceptions: firefighting, personal firewood gathering, and habitat imProvement for rare species are allowed.

I have to admit though I would just like to mention here that activity leaders there were months when I really had to search for do have one important obligation when they something I thought was worth printing - okay, not return home from the activity. That is to phone the everyone thought it was worth printing! Some Check-in Officer (as early as possible or at least members didn't agree with what I had to say on within 24 hours) and advise the safe completion of the occasions and I will always think that was good for trip and the number of people who went - and the Club.

DEPARTMENT OP THE INTEKIOR, UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, Washington, D. C. , March 9, 190Jh SIR: I have the honor to transmit herewith, for publication as a bulletin, a gazetteer of West Virginia! Very respectfully, HENRY GANNETT, Geogwvpher. Hon. CHARLES D. WALCOTT, Director United States Geological Survey. 3 A GAZETTEER OF WEST VIRGINIA. HENRY GANNETT. DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE. The State of West Virginia was cut off from Virginia during the civil war and was admitted to the Union on June 19, 1863. As orig inally constituted it consisted of 48 counties; subsequently, in 1866, it was enlarged by the addition -of two counties, Berkeley and Jeffer son, which were also detached from Virginia. The boundaries of the State are in the highest degree irregular. Starting at Potomac River at Harpers Ferry,' the line follows the south bank of the Potomac to the Fairfax Stone, which was set to mark the headwaters of the North Branch of Potomac River; from this stone the line runs due north to Mason and Dixon's line, i. e., the southern boundary of Pennsylvania; thence it follows this line west to the southwest corner of that State, in approximate latitude 39° 43i' and longitude 80° 31', and from that corner north along the western boundary of Pennsylvania until the line intersects Ohio River; from this point the boundary runs southwest down the Ohio, on the northwestern bank, to the mouth of Big Sandy River.
