1. Title: 13 Tzameti ISBN: 5060018488721 Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men. 2. Title: 12 Angry Men ISBN: 5050070005172 Adapted from Reginald Rose's television play, this film marked the directorial debut of Sidney Lumet. At the end of a murder trial in New York City, the 12 jurors retire to consider their verdict. The man in the dock is a young Puerto Rican accused of killing his father, and eleven of the jurors do not hesitate in finding him guilty. However, one of the jurors (Henry Fonda), reluctant to send the youngster to his death without any debate, returns a vote of not guilty. From this single event, the jurors begin to re-evaluate the case, as they look at the murder - and themselves - in a fresh light. 3. Title: 12:08 East of Bucharest ISBN: n/a 12:08pm on the 22 December 1989 was the exact time of Ceausescu's fall from power in Romania. Sixteen years on, a provincial TV talk show decides to commemorate the event by asking local heroes to reminisce about their own contributions to the revolution. But securing suitable guests proves an unexpected challenge and the producer is left with two less than ideal participants - a drink addled history teacher and a retired and lonely sometime-Santa Claus grateful for the company. -

Wilson 2015 iii UNSEEN FEMININITY: WOMEN IN JAPANESE NEW WAVE CINEMA Candice N. Wilson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2015 During the mid-1950s to the early 1970s a subversive cinema, known as the Japanese New Wave, arose in Japan. This dissertation challenges critical trends that use French New Wave cinema and the oeuvre of Oshima Nagisa as templates to construct Japanese New Wave cinema as largely male-centered and avant-garde in its formal aesthetics. I argue instead for the centrality of the erotic woman to a questioning of national and postwar identity in Japan, and for the importance of popular cinema to an understanding of this New Wave movement. In short, this study aims to break new ground in Japanese New Wave scholarship by focusing on issues of gender and popular aesthetics. -

The first was the news that, after 22 years as délégué général, Gilles Jacob stepped up to become Président while handing down the reins to Thierry Frémaux, the latter now divides his time between Cannes and duties as head of the Institute Lumière in Lyons. The other was the presence on the Croisette of seven previous Palme d’Or directors: Francis Ford Coppola (The Conversation, 1974, and Apocalypse Now, 1979), Ermanno Olmi (The Tree of Wooden Clogs, 1978), Shohei Imamura (The Ballad of Narayama, 1983, and The Eel, 1997), David Lynch (Wild at Heart, 1990), Joel and Ethan Coen (Barton Fink, 1991), and Abbas Kiarostami (The Taste of Cherries, 1997). One might add, too, that over the past quarter century each of their eight award-winning films helped considerably to set the tone and style of the world’s mostrevered film festival. Apocalypse Now Redux In the case of Apocalypse Now -- aka Apocalypse Now Redux, to denote a new version of an old film -- Francis Ford Coppola returned to Cannes with the completed version of his work-in-progress presented here 22 years ago. No less than 53 minutes were added to the re-edited 203-minute version, in addition to a re-mastered Technicolor transfer and a re-mastered soundtrack. -

Cannes International Film Festival 2000 By Ron Holloway Fall 2000 Issue of KINEMA REVOLUTION ON THE CROISETTE Scandinavia was a clear winner at Cannes 2000. But the revolution on the Croisette took place elsewhere. After Lars von Trier’s remarkable run of five previous entries (four times competing) in the Official Program -- to wit: Element of Crime (1984), Epidemic (1987) (selected for the Certain Regard), Europa (1991), Breaking the Waves (1996) (runner-up Grand Jury Prize), and Idiots (1998) -- the Danish director finally received the Golden Palm he so well deserved for Dancer in the Dark. Arguably he should have won it back in 1996 for Breaking the Waves and certainly he was the talk of the 1998 festival for proclaiming the merits of ”Dogma Manifesto” to all and sundry who would listen to this magnificent ploy. No matter, this time Dancer in the Dark was the clear favourite from the very moment the film packed the Salle Lumière for the 8:30 press screening on a Wednesday morning four days before the close of the festival. Originally Björk, the Icelandic pop star, was signed to compose the musical score for Dancer in the Dark. Then, by some stroke of good fortune, von Trier persuaded her to play the lead role of Selma, a Czech immigrant working extra shifts at a factory somewhere in rural America -- read provincial Sweden, for von Trier is afraid of flying. About to go blind from an hereditary eye disease, Selma needs every pennyshe can save for an operation to rescue her 10-year-old son from the same fate. -

WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2016 The continued collaboration between the Embassy of Japan and access>cinema has now reached its eighth year. Without the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation, it wouldn’t have been possible. This year we will have 22 different films showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo and of course, Dublin. We are delighted so many people throughout Ireland will get to experience these fantastic films. This year’s programme is one of the best yet, including films such as 100 Yen Love, a multi- award winning drama about how one argument can help transform your life. Nominated as Japan’s selection for Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Academy Awards, this film will surely warm your heart. When Marnie Was There, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Academy Awards, is a Studio Ghibli produced animation telling the story of Anna, and her friendship with Marnie, who promises to keep her secrets from everyone. If you’re a fan of superstar idol Atsuko Maeda, we have two of her films: Initiation Love, a romance with a dark twist, and Tamako in Moratorium about an unemployed university graduate living with her father. 2016 is the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake. Joy of Man’s Desiring is a film that explores the impact an unnamed earthquake has on children who lost their parents in the disaster. Informed by the director’s own childhood experience after the 1995 Kobe earthquake this film won a special mention at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
