He shows in particular how these vehicles, as vectors for urban regeneration, are used as tools for the “staging” of the city. Humanity has always cultivated the art of storytelling – an art that is at the heart of social ties everywhere (Salmon 2007). In recent years, the relationship between urban production and fiction, that is to say histories based on imagined “facts” rather than real facts, has changed in a context of ever greater territorial competition where design – the “part of the process between the problem and the results” (Raynaud and Wolff 2009) – plays an increasingly important role and contributes to an imagined or “fictional urban planning” (Matthey 2011) that even encompasses the production of transport networks such as tramways.1 As both the components of transport networks and technical objects (rolling stock), trams have come to represent a major electoral issue capable of toppling municipal majorities, a sought-after vector for urban regeneration in both urban cores and suburban areas, and an essential tool for local mayors and councillors, alongside self-service bike-hire systems and the development of major urban events in metropolitan areas. In recent years, new expectations in terms of sustainable development and urban marketing have made trams an object of desire, a sacralized icon and a symbol of the changes that affect the city and urban production.

Svenska städer har uppmärksammat spårvägars goda egenskaper och flera av dem har även påbörjat utredningar inför framtida spårvägsprojekt. Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka hur spårvägar kan bidra till attraktiva städer med fokus på dess gestaltning. Arbetet utgörs av en litteraturstudie som är baserad på bland annat tidigare studier, planeringsdokument, underlagsrapporter och vetenskapliga artiklar. Arbetets resultat tyder på att spårvägar har en positiv påverkan på stadsmiljön; - både som ett transportmedel med goda miljöegenskaper och hög kapacitet samt som ett medel för stadsomvandling. Spårväg är ett flexibelt trafikslag med väldigt lång livslängd som kan etableras på flera olika sätt. Dess utförande kan bland annat bidra till att spårvägen gör ett mindre visuellt intrång i staden samt en attraktiv stadsmiljö. Arbetet tar upp flera spårvägsutföranden som utgör goda exempel på detta. Det är viktigt att spårvägen får sitt berättigade utrymme i staden och att den blir integrerad i stadsbilden på ett smidigt sätt utan barriäreffekter. Hur arbetet kring spårvägens gestaltning utförs har en stor inverkan på spårvägens slutliga presentation i staden. Det är därför viktigt att gestaltningsarbetet påbörjas tidigt, gärna redan i initialfasen av projektet, och fortgår under hela projekteringsprocessen. Det bidrar till ett bättre slutresultat och även en möjlighet att lyfta fram lösningsförslag som andra teknikslag annars missat.
