Welcome to 2012! I hope everyone had a great Holiday. Ours was quite entertaining as Willow & Cooper (now 2 years/3 months) received a full im- mersion into the wonderful world of Santa and Christmas. Willow was mildly cautious when meeting Santa this time around, much better than the crying fest we experienced last year. Cooper on the other hand was clearly on Santa crack. Star“Roger, there’s no question about it. The only way to go is with factory built Carreras.” This is a quote from Mark Donohue’s book“The Unfair Advantage.” Roger Penske was looking for the right car for the new race series called the International Race of Champions (IROC) when it was materializing, and had looked at Formula Fords, Mustangs, Javelins, and Camaros. But Mark Donohue explained there were 4 good reasons for choosing the 911 RSR; 1] Penske wouldn’t have

The Historian’s Desk By Lou Scalzo to build them; 2] They wouldn’t be anywhere near as expensive as any other completely race prepared car; 3] They had to be as identically equal as any race cars ever built; 4] Foremost, the Carrera was the most reli- able car available. Quoting from his book, Mark states: “Dr. Fuhrmann had told me once that the car couldn’t be broken, as long as it wasn’t over revved and as long as it was shifted correctly. And it was really quite true. I always liked those cars, because they could be driven hard without worrying about breaking anything. They’re so strong and so well engineered, that there isn’t much a driver can destroy but the gearbox. The Carrera is – without a doubt – the very best off the shelf production race car available at any price. At least as long as there’s a competitive class to race it in. And Roger was going to make that happen. After listen- ing to me for a while, he decided maybe I was right.” Penske went back to Germany and had Porsche make a production run of fifteen perfectly identical cars for his races. He hired Peter Reinhart, a former employee who raced one of Penske’s Camaros in Europe, to keep tabs on the operation over there. Upon arriving in the U.S., the cars were initially sent directly to Riverside International Raceway, where they were identically maintained by a single team of mechanics during the ‘74 season.

January 2012 - Page 7 The car came with an impressive package of original paperwork and period photos that show the various changes made over the years to keep the car competitive.

The car was stored during 2008, and in 2009 the body was sent to California for restoration while the drivetrain and suspension were sent to RennGruppe Motorsports to be brought back to original specs. The process took approximately 1 ½ years to complete, finishing in 2010. In 2011 the RSR debuted at the Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca. John Tungstell was re-united with the RSR and could not believe his eyes. It was 1974 once again. Till next time, your Historian.

January 2012 - Page 9 Carolinas Region Holiday Banquet Written by David Butler

The Mountain Area hosted the Carolinas Region Holiday Party held at The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa in Waynesville, NC on December 3. The weather was perfect with a few early arrivers lamenting they had not brought their golf clubs. We had seventy-two members and guests attending with all Carolinas Region areas represented. Two guests attended from the Knoxville area as well, explaining that the Carolinas Region throws better parties. Charlie Schieren, Harmony Motors Sales Manager, provided guest speaker comments. He spoke on the new 991, of course, but also informed the group of Porsche model offering plans which include GTS versions on a number of platforms. We were all envious of Char- lie and his wife Amy as they were leaving for South Africa the following day to attend 991 launch activities. Chief Driving Instructors Marty Barrett (out-going) and Shane Tisdale (in-coming) re-pre- sented the Thomas J. Norby, Jr. Instructor of the Year Award to Jerry Kilcrease. Both Marty and Jerry spoke of their friendship and good times with Tom and the difficulty in dealing with his passing while instructing at Carolina Motorsports Park. Harvey Yancey presented year-end Autocross Awards to class winners, and presented Presi- dent’s Service Awards to Marty Barrett for his long term service as Chief Driving Instructor and Tom Morgan for his long term service as Editor of Tobacco Roads. Enthusiast of the Year Award was pre- sented to Triad Area member Wayne Capwell. We want to recognize the efforts of Bob Herrmann, Event Chair and Ron Camarata and Matt Pohsweg for planning the event. We also appreciate the efforts of Jan Herrmann and Jane Camarata in assisting with the event. We want to provide special thanks to Harmony Motors (formerly Deal Motorcars) for their sponsorship of the event. And also a special thanks to The Waynesville Inn staff for their efforts; the food, decoration and facility were great and we received numerous compliments on the venue. After the program and awards, everyone continued the evening with drinks, socializing and dancing.

January 2012 - Page 11 Driver’s Education Report By Brian Powell Atlanta Motorsports Park Tour and Winter DE Seminar On December 10th, Atlanta Motorsports Park opened its doors to a tour by members of the Carolinas Region. We had a small but enthusiastic group of 14 make the trek. AMP (www.atlantamotorsportspark.com) is a new motorsports facility being construct- ed about an hour north of Atlanta in Dawsonville, Ga. Several of us from the DE com- mittee made the trip to get a firsthand look at the facility with considerations for future Drivers Ed events. Currently, the track is still under construction with final grading being done on the last sections. Most of the track does have a base layer of pavement with the remaining portions scheduled to be done by year end. From what we saw on the tour, we generally thought a Spring 2012 opening was certainly reasonable. Al- though the track is just under 2 miles in length, it has several interesting features and has a good bit of elevation change. It will be challenging, certainly different from any other facilities in the Southeast. While we finalize the contract, it is safe to say we’re working on a 2012 date at AMP. For the region’s DE trackheads, you’ll probably want to keep mid-July open. We will be kicking off 2012 with our Winter DE Seminar on Saturday, February 4th at 1 pm at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. If you’re interested in Drivers Edu- cation but don’t know where to start, this is the place. We’ll go over the DE program, walk thru the requirements and answer any questions you may have. See the ad in this issue for more information. Beyond that, the DE calendar starts on April 28th/29th at Carolinas Motorsports Park. We’ll be returning to the Kershaw, SC facility to begin our 2012 events. For more on any of these events contact Brian Powell at [email protected] (704-260-0716).

January 2012 - Page 12 As these aerial and ground images show, construction of the new Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia is well underway. AMP plans to hold its first event in the Spring of 2012.

January 2012 - Page 13 MID-WINTER TRACK SEMINAR Saturday, Feb 4th, 2012 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Carolina Motorsports Park, Kershaw, SC

Have you considered participating in Carolinas Region’s Drivers Education Events but have not had the opportunity to do so? Or maybe you have some questions: What’s expected of me? Will it damage my car? Who are the instructors and how do they teach me? What do I have to do to my Porsche to participate? – If you have any of these questions or others, this event is for you! This is our annual off- track seminar to introduce the concepts behind the Carolinas Region’s Driver Education Program, which is a series of high performance driving schools conducted at local tracks like Carolina Motorsports Park – IT IS NOT A RACING SCHOOL!

You will have the opportunity to casually discuss the program with instructors and club members that have been enjoying “life on the track” for years. We will discuss the operation of a Drivers Ed weekend, concentrating on what you need (or want) to know as a participant. We will also talk about some of the fundamental concepts of performance driving such as turning, braking and accelerating properly, and the vocabulary used to describe track driving. Videotapes, charts and other materials will be used to give you a thorough understanding of what a weekend at the track entails. We'll discuss the roles of the instructors and how they can help you understand you car and your driving. We will discuss the safety check and tech inspection that is performed on each car to ensure a safe and enjoyable event. Finally, if time allows, we’ll tour Carolina Motorsports Park.

This seminar is open to all Carolinas Region members who have not participated in a Drivers Education event, or who have very limited experience on the track. **Region members will no prior track experience will receive a $50 Coupon towards a Carolinas Region DE event** You must pre-register to receive a coupon.

Registration is Free! Space is limited! Please send your registration including name, number attending (please limit to those actually interested in attending a DE event), address, telephone number, track experience if any, and email address to:
