VALENTE AND ANTONIO MAROTTA As the flame of light in a windless place remains tranquil and free from agitation, likewise, the heart of the seeker of Self-Consciousness, attuned in Yoga, remains free from restlessness and tranquil. —The Bhagavad Gita The philosophy of yoga has been used for millennia to experience, examine, and explain the intricacies of the mind and the essence of the human psyche. The sage Patanjali, who compiled and codified the yoga teachings up to his time (500–200 BCE) in his epic work Yoga Darsana, defined yoga as a method used to still the fluctuations of the mind to reach the central reality of the true self (Iyengar, 1966). Patanjali’s teachings encour- age an intentional lifestyle of moderation and harmony by offering guidelines that involve moral and ethical standards of living, postural and breathing exercises, and various meditative modalities all used to cultivate spiritual growth and the evolution of consciousness. In the modern era, the ancient yoga philosophy has been revitalized and applied to enrich the quality of everyday life and has more recently been applied as a therapeutic intervention to bring relief to those experiencing Copyright American Psychological Association. For example, empirical research has demon- strated the benefits of yogic interventions in the treatment of depression and anxiety (Khumar, Kaur, & Kaur, 1993; Shapiro et al., 2007; Vinod, Vinod, & Khire, 1991; Woolery, Myers, Sternlieb, & Zeltzer, 2004), schizophrenia (Duraiswamy, Thirthalli, Nagendra, & Gangadhar, 2007), and alcohol depen- dence (Raina, Chakraborty, Basit, Samarth, & Singh, 2001). -

Bryan (ERYT500) - Program Director Mobile 0415 362 534 Email: [email protected] Website: www.knoffyoga.com Levels 8 & 9 – Advanced & Master THE HISTORY In 1994, Nicky Knoff and James Bryan took a sabbatical to the Mount Quincan Crater Retreat, just outside of Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands behind Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The goal was to create a comprehensive and complete new program, which incorporated the anatomical alignment and progression of Asanas in Iyengar Yoga, and combine it with the energetic aspects of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga viz. Bandhas, Drishti, Ujjayi Pranayama and Vinyasa. We learned in Iyengar Yoga how to progressively practice postures. For example with Backbends, you perform an easy pose to warm up, a stronger pose to work more deeply, and then the strongest pose of the session – challenging yourself in a safe and methodical manner. This safe and methodical approach – carefully easing deeper into postures, was not a concept we found in Ashtanga Yoga. In fact, as we progressed through the Series (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) we could not discern any logical sequencing. It was as if someone had written down the various yoga poses on pieces of paper, thrown them into a hat, and pulled them out at random. With traditional Ashtanga, you only progress if you can do the postures in the Series order and if not, you stay stuck on the particular challenging pose, until you can. -

Die Wurzeln des Yoga Haṭha Yoga Teil 2 as tun wir eigentlich, wenn wir Âsanas üben? WWie begründen wir, dass die Praxis einer bestimmten Haltung Sinn macht? Worauf können wir uns stützen, wenn wir nach guten Gründen für das Üben eines Âsanas suchen? Der Blick auf die vielen Publikationen über Yoga zeigt: Bei den Antworten auf solche Fragen spielt – neben dem heutigen wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisstand – der Bezug auf die lange Tradition des Yoga immer eine wichtige Rolle. Aber sind die Antworten, die uns die alten mündlichen und schriftlichen Traditionen vermitteln, befriedigend, wenn wir nach dem Sinn eines Âsanas suchen? Was können wir von der Tradition wirklich lernen und was eher nicht? Eine transparente und nachvollziehbare Erklärung und Begründung von Yogapraxis braucht eine ernsthafte Reflexion dieser Fragen. Dafür ist ein auf Fakten gründender, ehrlicher und wertschätzender Umgang mit der Tradition des Ha†hayoga unverzichtbar. Dabei gibt es einiges zu beachten: Der physische Teil des Ha†hayoga beinhaltet keinen ausgewiesenen und fest 6 VIVEKA 57 Die Wurzeln des Yoga umrissenen Kanon bestimmter Âsanas, auch wenn bis heute immer wieder von „klassischen Âsanas“ die Rede ist. Auch gibt es kein einheitliches und fest umrissenes Konzept, auf das sich die damalige Âsanapraxis stützte. Vielmehr zeigt sich der Ha†hayoga als Meister der Integration verschiedenster Einflüsse und ständiger Entwicklung und Veränderung. Das gilt für die Erfindung neuer Übungen mit ihren erwarteten Wirkungen wie auch für die großen Ziele der Yogapraxis überhaupt. Um die Tradition des Ha†hayoga zu verstehen reicht es nicht, einen alten Text nur zu zitieren. Es bedarf vielmehr eines Blickes auf seine Entwicklung und Geschichte. -

Research is beginning to demonstrate that individuals who suffer the effects of trauma have often experienced several negative events that accumulate over the course of one’s lifetime. It has been displayed that when treated early, the adverse effects of trauma may be much less debilitating. Recent studies indicate traumatic memories are often stored within the body and are difficult to recall through cognition alone. Therefore, somatic therapies such as yoga are proving to be an effective means of working through this unresolved trauma. -
Detoxification and Traditional Hatha Yoga(New)
Detoxification in Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda By Mas Vidal Introduction The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) is a unique text of the Nath yogis that enumerates some interesting methods for purifying the body. Swami Svatmarama, the chief disciple of Swami Goraknath authored it during the medieval period. Evidently, Matsyendranath, founder of the Nath (synonym for Shiva) cult along with Goraknath understood clearly the importance of mind- body purification as requisites for spiritual evolution and thus created a six-fold system (shat- karma) of detoxification. This popular yoga text is composed of four chapters. In brief, the first chapter deals with postural yoga (asana); chapter two deals with the six actions of purification (shatkarma and pranayama); chapter three describes the physical gestures and energy locks (mudras and bandhas), and chapter four discusses spiritual liberation (samadhi). The placement of the shat-karmas (purification practices) in the second chapter prior to the last chapter on samadhi (liberation) indicates the importance of having a clean bodily house to attain spiritual freedom. This article highlights the correlation the detoxifying actions described in chapter two of the HYP with those mentioned in the main Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Interestingly, the HYP methods have much in common with those used in Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science of self-healing. Similarly, Ayurvedic mastermind Charaka, devised a five-fold system (pancha karma) for purification of the doshas (vata, pitta & kapha) to improve the mind-body relationship. The concept of detoxification, which boldly appears in both yoga and ayurvedic systems, demonstrates a long history of inter-connectedness between the two sciences. -

Introduction t its heart, hatha yoga is more than just flexibility or strength in postures; it is the management of prana, the vital life force that animates all levels of being. Prana enables the body to move and the mind to think. It is the intelligence that coordinates our senses, and the perceptible manifestation of our higher selves. By becoming more attentive to prana—and enhancing and directing its flow through the Apractices of hatha yoga—we can invigorate the body and mind, develop an expanded inner awareness, and open the door to higher states of consciousness. The yoga tradition describes five movements or functions of prana known as the vayus (literally “winds”)—prana vayu (not to be confused with the undivided master prana), apana vayu, samana vayu, udana vayu, and vyana vayu. These five vayus govern different areas of the body and different physical and subtle activities. -

Marichyasana B requires the half lotus position which can be difficult to attain if you have knee instabilities, tightness in your hips, or are athletic. Patience must reign as you wait for your hip joint to slowly open up to allow the deep inner work of this posture. Method: From Downward dog hop through to Dandasana. Inhaling place your LEFT leg in half lotus, turning the sole of your foot upward and if your hip allows, moving your heel toward your navel. If you are unable to get your leg safely in half lotus you can drop the foot out of the lotus position and place it by your right buttock (see picture of Jim). With your left leg in half lotus or under your thigh, bend your right knee sliding your foot back toward your hip, allow your right hip to lift off the floor Jim as you roll forward on your sitting bones and ground your left thigh, lean forward sliding your right arm inside your leg and forward (see picture of Abby). You can stay here if you are unable to complete the final step.
