Here are the dispositions of the additional CN units sold since last month: • Sold to CANAC: CN GP9RM’s 4006. 4021, 4033, and 4035 (From Edmonton). These units were moved from Edmonton to Superior for furtherance on BNSF to the BURLINGTON JUNCTION RAILWAY for painting. • To NATIONAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT: CN GP9RM’s 4016, 4017, 7237, GP38-2W 4779, SAR C39-8 7480, SAR B30-7’s 1007 and 1008. (Note: CN 7237 and 4779 will have to move from Edmonton on flat cars). • To CYCLE SYSTEMS: An Additional WC SD45, 6605. Sadly, CN SD40 5000 class GF-30c, the first SD40 built by GMDD-London in 1967 for the railway, and had been earmarked for a Canadian museum is now history. She was cut up for scrap at Lac La Biche, AB on the ATHABASKA NORTHERN Railway in Alberta. Some of the parts will be shipped to Calgary, AB. It had operated in Canada for 30- years. As reported last month in CRO, National Railway Equipment has purchased CN 4010, 4015, 4016, 4017, 4024, 4027, 4030, 4031, 4034, and 7237 from the CN auction sale in May. http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/Roll66/0006730-R1-030-13A.jpg On August 4th, in Prince George, on former BC RAIL trackage, a two-employee switching job was utilizing a BELTPACK®, and moving 53 bled-off cars southbound, when it became uncontrolled down the 1% grade. Even with three yard units (CN GP9RM 7222, Slug booster 256, and GP9RM 7043), the end cars left the point protection zone, and went through a set of crossovers and into the side of the inbound CN manifest Train M357 coming off the Fraser Sub. In the wake of Saturday's collision of two CN trains in Prince George, Transport Canada has sent a notice and order to CN Rail setting out five areas which need immediate action. Transport Canada says it had a Dangerous Goods Transportation Inspector, and a Rail Safety Inspector on the scene of the crash and they have written the following orders: 1. Train movements will not be protected by the "point protection "zone, and any existing instructions related to the "point protection" zone (P.P. Zone) are null and void. (The inspectors believe this zone, which was to control train traffic, gave operators a false sense of security that there was only one train in the zone at any given time). 2. An employee must physically be on a leading end of equipment to view the track at all times to avoid possible conflicts when switching. (Opinion 250 has been told the trains were being operated by "remote control"). 3. The maximum cars to be handled is 30 loads, or 40 cars, but if 40 at least 10 have to be empty. (CN has confirmed there were 3 locomotives and 53 cars on the southbound train, while the westbound train had two locomotives and 67 cars). 4. There has to be a sufficient number of cars with operating air brakes to control movement. 5. All data related to the braking performance, inspection, repairs, and yard engines assigned to switching duties must be retained for 30 days. Canada Rail Safety will monitor to ensure the conditions are met. CN has received the order, and has taken immediate action to comply. See CN derailment video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyUwObb3AZc CANADIAN PACIFIC CP Locomotives Retired since last issue: Nil since May 2007. CP is going to order 51 ES44AC’s, to be delivered in the first quarter of 2008, and 34 ES44AC’s in the last quarter of 2008, totalling 85 units. These will replace CEFX 1026-1059, currently assigned to Montreal, St-Luc yard. CP will order another 25-40 ES44AC’s in 2009 and 2010. The number series is unknown at present. As first reported in CRO last month, CP has now received 20 CEFX SD9043MAC(U)'s coming from UNION PACIFIC. As of Mid-August CEFX 100- 119 have all arrived on the property. See Wilco’s website for photo’s of each one: http://www.mountainrailway.com/CEFX%20100%20Page.htm During August, CP will be receiving 55 SD40-2’s, SD50’s and SD45’s leased locomotives from NATIONAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT. They will be received from NRE in Silvis, IL, Mount Vernon, IL, Paducah, KY and Capreol, ON. By nature these deals never happen *exactly* as planned due to a number of variables. There will be unit failures, outright rejections, and very possibly substitutes. However, what you see below (Many thanks to Mr. Bill Miller, and Bruce Mercer), is the tentative list of unit numbers with their model, heritage and last known paint scheme. Note there is some qualified information that has not been *confirmed* where applicable. The list actually has 55 units and you can see someone has an interesting idea of what "SD40/SD45" means!!
