The February General Meeting of the WCRA will be held at Rainbow Creek Station in Confederation Park in Burnaby following the AGM. ON THE COVER Drake Street Roundhouse, Vancouver—taken November 1981 by Micah Gampe, and donated to the 374 Pavilion by Roundhouse Dental. Visible from left to right are British Columbia power car Prince George, Steam locomotive #1077 Herb Hawkins, Royal Hudson #2860’s tender, and CP Rail S-2 #7042 coming onto the turntable. In 1981, the roundhouse will soon be vacated by the railway, and the Provincial collection will move to BC Rail at North Vancouver. The Roundhouse will become a feature pavilion at Expo 86, and then be developed into today’s Roundhouse Community Centre and 374 Pavilion. Revised 10/30/08 www.canadianrailwayobservations.com CANADIAN NATIONAL CN Locomotives retired since last issue: (Previous retirement August 25th) CN SD50F 5453 on October 4th CN SD50F 5415 on October 10th The first BC RAIL unit has been repainted into the latest CN livery. Ex-BC RAIL DASH 8- 40CM(u) 4615 which was purchased new from GE in 1990 has been at CADRAIL-Lachine for several months and included in the work to be done was an upgrade, and a complete CN repaint with BCOL sub-lettering under the cab number. She was moved from CADRAIL in Lachine to CN’s Pte-St. Charles Yard for testing, and In a light power move N SBK05 17 departed CN’s Pte-St. Charles Oct 17th with CN 4774 and BCOL 4615 and hours later arrived at CN-Taschereau Yard. These will be similar in appearance to the previous order, but will have a few internal improvements. The CN’s 8800-series are equipped with an Automatic Start when the pressure is down to 105 lbs, and these locomotives start up with an “air starter” (which is similar to the MLW-built M630’s). -

This Edition of the WCR Press opens 2021 with the hope that wide distribution of the COVID- 19 vaccine will allow us to resume passenger service by the end of this summer or early fall. We have developed an opening plan and new schedule so that when circumstances permit, service may commence immediately. The St. Jacobs Restoration and Maintenance Facility has remained open on a limited basis for some restoration projects and on-going equipment safety related maintenance in anticipation of when we start operations again. Although wide ranging in topics and photos, this Edition has a winter element to it. Recently two beautiful February days afforded us the opportunity for future winter promotional photos and videos. This was led by our Assistant General Manager Greg McDonnell along with videographers graciously supplied by Waterloo Region Tourism and Marketing Corporation capturing these winter images. “We took our time working south, stopping wherever photographic opportunities presented themselves. And if we started the day with the quintessential Woolwich Township lunch, we ended it with the consummate image of winter in Canada. The Conestogo River bridge in St. Jacobs spans not just the river but the millrace to the old flour mill downtown. When we were switching to build the train yesterday, I noticed as we pulled onto the bridge for head room that the mill race was frozen over and shoveled clean for skating as far as you could see. What if, I wondered. -

<:;an..adi J~mnn Number 162 / Janua r y 1965 Cereal box coupons and soap package enclosures do not general ly excite much enthusiasm from the editor of 'Canadian Rail', but we must admit we are looking forward with some eagerness to comp leting our collection of RAILWAY MUGS currently being distribut e d by the Quaker Oats Company, in their specially-marked packages of Quaker Oats. This series of twelve hot chocolate mugs depicts the develop - ment of the steam locomotive in Canada from the 0-6-0 "Samson", to the CPR 2-10-4 #8000. The mugs are being offered by the Quaker Oats Company of Cana da to salute Canada's Centennial, and the part played by the rail ways and their steam locomotives in furthering the pro ~ ress of the nation. Each cup pictures an authentic locomotive design -- one shows a Canadian Northern 2-8-0, a type of locomotive that made a major contribution to the country's prairie economy by moving grain from the Western provinces to the Lakehead -- another shows one of the Canadian Pacific's ubiquitous D-10 engines. There are 12 different locomotives in the series - each a col lector's item. The reproductions are precisely etched in decora tive colours and trimmed with 22k gold. Here are the dispositions of the additional CN units sold since last month: • Sold to CANAC: CN GP9RM’s 4006. 4021, 4033, and 4035 (From Edmonton). These units were moved from Edmonton to Superior for furtherance on BNSF to the BURLINGTON JUNCTION RAILWAY for painting. • To NATIONAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT: CN GP9RM’s 4016, 4017, 7237, GP38-2W 4779, SAR C39-8 7480, SAR B30-7’s 1007 and 1008. (Note: CN 7237 and 4779 will have to move from Edmonton on flat cars). -

New CN Power: The following new SD70M-2 sightings came from several CRO readers this month: On January 14th, CN Intermodal 194 (which is a very lucrative UPS contracted train and operates between Chicago-Memphis-Jackson-New Orleans), departed Markham with brand new CN 8853, CN 5513, CN 9543, 150 cars, 7141 tons and 9845-feet of train. On January 13th at Chappel Jct, (near Saskatoon, SK), CN 104 had CN 8865 leading. On January 13th, CN 198 had CN 8855-2643 for power at Chappel Jct. January 11th, CN train Q120 with 2525-5698 and new CN SD70M-2 8863 with 9823-feet of train at 8767 tons enroute to Halifax, NS and arrived on the 12th. While on the Montmagny Subdivision, SD70M-2 8863 reportedly had a minor mechanical issue that was resolved while in transit. -

CRO APRIL CANADIAN NATIONAL Loaded rail train U780 is seen on the CN Waukesha Sub ducking under the UP bridge (Former CNW Adams Line) at Sussex, Wisconsin. This US Steel unit rail train for Gary, Indiana was photographed by William Beecher Jr. on March 11th. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2011/apr11/cn2242wb.htm Joe Ferguson clicked CN C40-8W 2145 in BNSF paint with CN “Noodle”, in Du Quoin, IL and CN 2146 fresh from the paint shop at Centralia on March 1st 2011. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2011/apr11/cn2146joeferguson.htm CN C40-8 2148, (which had been heavy bad-ordered at Woodcrest since received from BNSF), finally entered service February 27th sporting full CN livery. As seen in the photo, prior to her Woodcrest repaint, CN 2148 was one of the better looking ex-BNSF units still in the warbonnet paint. She now sports the thick CN cab numbers, gold Scotchlite and the web address tight to the CN Noodle. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Planning policies in Ontario, such as the Provincial Policy Statement and the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, enforce urban growth boundaries to preserve natural and agricultural lands while improving neighbourhood and city vibrancy. Consequently, urban areas must be intensified through high-density development, which will limit the land available for public green spaces and large private yards. As a result, homebuyers looking for spacious properties will have to rely mainly on the turnover of older homes. Therefore, this thesis explores how residents currently living in homes with private yards value private and public outdoor space, and whether they have interest in upsizing or downsizing their homes in the future. Neighbourhood and property attributes that may be influential in homebuyer decision-making are also investigated. The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo (“Kitchener-Waterloo”) were chosen as the study location, as both cities are affected by the Growth Plan and are currently being intensified.
