Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Qiao Li is Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, Selangor, Malaysia, and Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne. He has a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Gloucestershire, UK, with expertise in Chinese- language cinema. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 11, No. 8, pp. 910-916, August 2021 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17507/tpls.1108.06 Analysis on the Translation of Mao Zedong’s 2nd Poem in “送瘟神 ‘sòng wēn shén’” by Arthur Cooper in the Light of “Three Beauties” Theory Pingli Lei Guangdong Baiyun University, Guangzhou 510450, Guangdong, China Yi Liu Guangdong Baiyun University, Guangzhou 510450, Guangdong, China Abstract—Based on “Three Beauties” theory of Xu Yuanchong, this paper conducts an analysis on Arthur Cooper’s translation of “送瘟神”(2nd poem) from three aspects: the beauty of sense, sound and form, finding that, because of his lack of empathy for the original poem, Cooper fails to convey the connotation of the original poem, the rhythm and the form of the translated poem do not match Chinese classical poetry, with three beauties having not been achieved. Thus, the author proposes that, in order to better spread the culture of Chinese classical poetry and convey China’s core spirit to the world, China should focus on cultivating the domestic talents who have a deep understanding about Chinese culture, who are proficient not only in Chinese classical poetry, but also in classical poetry translation. Yu Title: From Print to Screen: Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences Supervisor: Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. In this thesis, I examine how sociopolitical contexts and production cultures have affected how original Asian American narrative texts have been adapted into mainstream romantic comedies. I begin by defining several terms used throughout my thesis: race, ethnicity, Asian American, and humor/comedy. Then, I give a history of Asian American media portrayals, as these earlier images have profoundly affected the ways in which Asian Americans are seen in media today. Finally, I compare the adaptation of humor in two case studies, Flower Drum Song (1961) which was created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Crazy Rich Asians (2018) which was directed by Jon M. Chu. From this analysis, I argue that both seek to undercut the perpetual foreigner myth, but the difference in sociocultural incentives and control of production have resulted in more nuanced portrayals of some Asian Americans in the latter case. However, its tendency to push towards the mainstream has limited its ability to challenge stereotyped representations, and it continues to privilege an Americentric perspective. 2 Acknowledgements I owe this thesis to the support and love of many people. Throughout its 80-plus years, everything the CCP has touched has been marred with lies, wars, famine, tyranny, massacre and terror. Traditional faiths and principles have been violently destroyed. Original ethical concepts and social structures have been disintegrated by force. Empathy, love and harmony among people have been twisted into struggle and hatred. Veneration and appreciation of the heaven and earth have been replaced by an arrogant desire to “fight with heaven and earth.” The result has been a total collapse of social, moral and ecological systems, and a profound crisis for the Chinese people, and indeed for humanity. -

Flowers in axillary racemes, spikes, or rarely solitary. Calyx campanulate to tubular; standard clawed or narrowed to base; wings auriculate; keel blunt to apiculate. Stamens diadelphous, rarely monadelphous; anthers usually uniform, but slightly dimorphic and with confluent thecae in Glycyrrhiza. Ovary few to many ovuled (sometimes 1-seeded); style slender, bearded or not, with a terminal or lateral stigma. Legumes compressed, angled or inflated, sometimes with sutured margins intruded or longitudinally septate, occasionally torulose, dehiscent or indehiscent. Seeds oblong-reniform, estrophiolate. About 24 genera and 2900–3200 species: principally in Asia, Europe, and North America, but extending thinly in mountainous and/or drier places to S Africa, Australia, and temperate South America; 11 genera and 586 species (324 endemic, two introduced) in China. Galega officinalis Linnaeus (Sp. Pl. 2: 714. 1753), probably native to SW Asia (Caucasus), is cultivated in China. 1a. Allegories and Appropriations of the ―Ghost‖: A Study of Xu Xu‘s Ghost Love and Its Three Film Adaptations THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Qin Chen Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Master's Examination Committee: Kirk Denton, Advisor Patricia Sieber Copyright by Qin Chen 2010 Abstract This thesis is a comparative study of Xu Xu‘s (1908-1980) novella Ghost Love (1937) and three film adaptations made in 1941, 1956 and 1995. As one of the most popular writers during the Republican period, Xu Xu is famous for fiction characterized by a cosmopolitan atmosphere, exoticism, and recounting fantastic encounters. Ghost Love, his first well-known work, presents the traditional narrative of ―a man encountering a female ghost,‖ but also embodies serious psychological, philosophical, and even political meanings. The approach applied to this thesis is semiotic and focuses on how each text reflects the particular reality and ethos of its time. Over the course of 1985 the Association’s activities moved out of Chengdu to the east, to Chongqing and Fuling, led by strong personalities and poets such as Zhou Lunyou, Bai Hua, and Liao Yiwu. The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Linda Mizejewski, Advisor Sally Kitch, Co-advisor Rebecca Wanzo Judy Wu Copyright by Dong Li Isbister 2009 Abstract In this dissertation, I use contemporary Chinese immigrant women‘s visual and literary narratives to examine gender, race, ethnicity, migration, immigration, and sexual experiences in various power discourses from a transnational perspective. In particular, I focus on the relationship between body memories and history, culture, migration and immigration portrayed in these works. I develop and define ―the sent-down body,‖ a term that describes educated Chinese urban youths (also called sent-down youths in many studies) working in the countryside during the Chinese Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The ―sent-down body‖ in this context and in my analysis is the politicized and sexualized migrant body. The term also describes previous sent-down youths‘ immigration experiences in the United States, because many of them became immigrants in the post-Cultural Revolution era and are usually described as ―overseas sent-down youths‖ (yangchadui). Therefore, the ―sent-down body‖ is also the immigrant body, and it is racialized. Moreover, the ―sent-down body‖ is gendered, but I study the female ―sent-down body‖ and its represented experiences in specific political, historical, cultural, and sexual contexts. By using ―the sent-down body‖ as an organizing concept in my dissertation, I introduce a new category of analysis in studies of Chinese immigrants‘ history and culture.
