Contact: Mike Burnett Contact: Jill Zanger Contact: [email protected] [email protected] Delta Corporate Communications 503-238-1915 503-532-0316 404-715-2554 Nike, Inc. and Delta Air Lines Present The Climate Trust with a $25,000 Donation to Address Climate Change Donation to Offset One Year's Air Travel by Investing in a Portfolio of Projects that Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Beaverton, OR (May 23, 2002) –Nike and Delta Air Lines today announced that they will offset the equivalent of 5,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by donating $25,000 to The Climate Trust, a Portland, Oregon-based non-profit organization committed to reducing greenhouse gas levels. The donation represents Nike and Delta’s second Eco-Class fund, which each company contributes to every time Nike purchases a Delta ticket for flights originating in the United States. The fund serves to mitigate the impact of business travel on Delta Air Lines by Nike U.S. employees, and represents how both companies are addressing the rising level of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere and the resulting impact on global climate change. “Science tells us that human activity has already initiated rapid climate change, and that we must act now to reduce the build-up of global warming pollutants in the atmosphere,” said Mike Burnett, executive director of The Climate Trust. “Corporate leadership is especially important in America on this critical global issue, and we are pleased that Nike and Delta have chosen to participate in our offset partnership program which provides companies with a simple option for achieving cost-effective, high-quality offsets.” The Climate Trust was formed in 1997 in response to landmark Oregon legislation requiring new power plants to counter their global warming impact.

  • Case 3 the US Airline Industry in 2007
CTAC03 4/13/07 17:21 Page 26 case 3 The US Airline Industry in 2007 Here’s a list of 129 airlines that in the past 20 years filed for bankruptcy. Continental was smart enough to make that list twice. As of 1992, in fact – though the picture would have improved since then – the money that had been made since the dawn of aviation by all of this country’s airline companies was zero. Absolutely zero. Sizing all this up, I like to think that if I’d been at Kitty Hawk in 1903 when Orville Wright took off, I would have been farsighted enough, and public- spirited enough – I owed this to future capitalists – to shoot him down. I mean, Karl Marx couldn’t have done as much damage to capitalists as Orville did. WARREN BUFFETT, CHAIRMAN, BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY As they returned to work at the beginning of January 2007, the senior executives of America’s leading airlines experienced a feeling of optimism and joie de vivre that had been largely absent for most of the previous six years. Between 2001 and 2005, the industry had been ravaged by the horror of September 11, 2001 and the raft of new security measures that followed in its wake, by a tripling in the price of jet fuel, and by unprecedented competitive pres- sures from a new generation of low-cost airlines. During this period, the indus- try racked up losses of $35 billion and four of the countries six biggest airlines were forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Yet, 2006 appeared to be a turning point.

  • Delta Skymiles Judged Best Frequent Traveler Program for Shuttle Passengers in the Northeast Corridor
Airline Industry Analysis - Press Release Contact: Jay Sorensen IdeaWorks Company For inquiries: 414-961-1939 Delta SkyMiles Judged Best Frequent Traveler Program For Shuttle Passengers in the Northeast Corridor IdeaWorks compares the frequent traveler programs available to Delta Shuttle, US Airways Shuttle and Amtrak Acela passengers. May 26, 2004, Shorewood, WI—Delta Airlines comes out on top in an analysis of the frequent traveler programs available to passengers on shuttle services in the busy commuting corridor of Boston, New York and Washington, DC. The three programs surveyed were Delta SkyMiles, on The Delta Shuttle by Delta Air Lines; Dividend Miles, on the US Airways Shuttle by US Airways; and Guest Rewards, on Amtrak’s high-speed Acela trains. These carriers operate high frequency service, with a minimum of hourly departures, between the three Northeast cities. Each program was analyzed on the basis of seven categories representing key attributes for shuttle travelers, such as the number of paid shuttle trips required to earn a free ticket, the breadth of award travel options and the recognition given the most frequent travelers (“elite” status). Within the categories, scores were assigned each frequent traveler program, with the best program receiving the maximum score. The maximum scores vary for each category to reflect the relative importance of the attributes. By design, a perfect score of 100 points would indicate a program that offers the best benefits in each of the seven categories. The Delta SkyMiles program earned top honors with 79 points. Amtrak’s Guest Rewards placed second with a total of 72 points and the US Airways Dividend Miles program placed third with 66 points.
