  • Great Expectations: the Experienced Credibility of Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentary Party Leaders
Great expectations: the experienced credibility of cabinet ministers and parliamentary party leaders Sabine van Zuydam [email protected] Concept, please do not cite Paper prepared for the NIG PUPOL international conference 2016, session 4: Session 4: The Political Life and Death of Leaders 1 In the relationship between politics and citizens, political leaders are essential. While parties and issues have not become superfluous, leaders are required to win support of citizens for their views and plans, both in elections and while in office. To be successful in this respect, credibility is a crucial asset. Research has shown that credible leaders are thought to be competent, trustworthy, and caring. What requires more attention is the meaning of competent, caring, and trustworthy leaders in the eyes of citizens. In this paper the question is needed to be credible according to citizens in different leadership positions, e.g. cabinet ministers and parliamentary party leaders. To answer this question, it was studied what is expected of leaders in terms of competence, trustworthiness, and caring by conducting an extensive qualitative analysis of Tweets and newspaper articles between August 2013 and June 2014. In this analysis, four Dutch leadership cases with a contrasting credibility rating were compared: two cabinet ministers (Frans Timmermans and Mark Rutte) and two parliamentary party leaders (Emile Roemer and Diederik Samsom). This analysis demonstrates that competence relates to knowledgeability, decisiveness and bravery, performance, and political strategy. Trustworthiness includes keeping promises, consistency in views and actions, honesty and sincerity, and dependability. Caring means having an eye for citizens’ needs and concern, morality, constructive attitude, and no self-enrichment.

Parliamentary dimension Dutch EU Presidency 1 January - 1 July 2016 Index parliamentary dimension dutch eu presidency Index Reflection During the first six months of 2016, it was the Netherlands' turn to assume the Presidency of Meeting of the 3 the Council of the European Union. Throughout this period the Dutch government was Chairpersons of COSAC responsible for efficiently guiding the Council negotiations. But the Dutch Presidency also had a 'parliamentary dimension' to it. This entailed that the Dutch House of Representatives and the Senate organised six conferences for fellow parliamentarians from EU member states. Stability, economic 5 coordination and governance The aim of these conferences was to encourage parliamentarians to work together towards a stronger parliamentary engagement in European decision-making. Particularly now that many important decisions are made at a European level, effective parliamentary scrutiny plays a Innovative & Inspiring 7 major role. And that is why it is essential that national parliaments and the European Parlia- ment join forces and work together. It was in this spirit that, during the six months of the Dutch Presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate made it their goal to encourage cooperation between parliamentarians and so increase their joint effectiveness. EUROPEAN JEWISH DIGEST: LOOKING AT THE HEADLINES ACROSS JEWISH EUROPE VOLUME 2, ISSUE 3: MARCH 2015 1 / ISSUES CONCERNING ANTISEMITISM Violence, Vandalism & Abuse There were several instances of violent and abusive antisemitism in Europe during March. In France, two Jewish teenagers were robbed and beaten after leaving a synagogue in Marseilles. The two assailants allegedly said to the victims “dirty Jews, we will exterminate all of you.” Both teenagers required medical attention. In Austria, a Jewish man wearing a Star of David necklace was attacked in a shopping centre in St. Pölten. The victim said that he was taunted by a group of men with antisemitic insults, after which one of them attacked him. The police quickly arrested the attacker, who whilst admitting to the attack, denied that it was motivated by antisemitism. In the UK, while carrying out an experiment similar to one undertaken by another reporter in Paris in February, Jewish journalist Jonathan Kalmus was subjected to antisemitic abuse and insults when walking in Manchester and Bradford wearing a kippah. In Bradford, he was stalked by a man who repeatedly took pictures of him and endured shouts of “you Jew,” “fight the Jewish scum” and “you’re a Jew, not a Muslim... Jew, Jew, Jew run!” However, in one positive moment in a coffee shop, a Muslim man, wearing traditional Islamic dress stood up, raised his hand and welcome him with “Shalom, Shalom”. In response to this, Prime Minister David Cameron said “there are no excuses for the shocking antisemitism filmed in Manchester and Bradford. The idea that Jewish people feel unsafe again in Europe strikes at the heart of everything we stand for.

The lion’s share of the research on populism has focused on defining populism, on the causes for its rise and continued success, and more recently on its influence on government and on public policy. Less research has, however, been conducted on measuring populist attitudes among voters. In this article, we seek to fill this gap by measuring populist attitudes and to investigate whether these attitudes can be linked with party preferences. We distinguish three political attitudes: (1) populist attitudes, (2) pluralist attitudes, and (3) elitist attitudes. We devise a measurement of these attitudes and explore their validity by way of using a principal component analysis on a representative Dutch data set (N = 600). We indeed find three statistically separate scales of political attitudes. We further validated the scales by testing whether they are linked to party preferences and find that voters who score high on the populist scale have a significantly higher preference for the Dutch populist parties, the Party for Freedom, and the Socialist Party.

  • Maakt Het Verschil? Een Onderzoek Naar Opvolgingen Van Nederlandse Politiek Leiders
Gekozen of benoemd: maakt het verschil? Een onderzoek naar opvolgingen van Nederlandse politiek leiders BAP Nationale Politiek, S.H. Stikvoort Scriptiebegeleider: J.A.H.

Unofficial translation of the letter from the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Eritrean diaspora tax in Europe report The original Dutch letter can be found here: https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/documenten/kamerstukken/2017/09/18/kamerbrief-over-eritrese- diasporabelasting To: Chair of the second chamber of the Dutch Parliament Date: 18 September 2017 Subject: Eritrean diaspora tax in Europe Dear Chair, In a letter to your Chamber on 15 December 2016 (“Eritrea and the influence of Eritrea in the Netherlands”, kst 22831-125), the Cabinet stated that it would commission a study into the diaspora tax in several European countries. This study was requested by your Chamber as per the motion 119 of Parliament member Karabulut (Kst 22 813-119). The research has now been completed and the Cabinet hereby presents the research report, titled “The 2% Tax for Eritreans in the diaspora”.1 The DSP-research, background and methodology In 2016, several options were explored for investigating “the nature and extent of the diaspora taxation in the European context”, as was requested in the motion. Contact with the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels and with the relevant EU member states showed that there was no political support, or a sense of priority, for a common European study into this subject from other member states. Following this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned its own study in seven countries. This study was executed by the DSP-groep in Amsterdam in cooperation with European External Policy Advisors (EEPA) in Brussels and the Tilburg University. The DSP-groep has previously produced a qualitative study into the integration of Eritreans and issues in the Eritrean community in the Netherlands for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

  • MA Thesis B.W. Dencher
New players, new entries? The connection and influence of the private military and security industry on political assistants of the ministry of Defense in the Netherlands B.W.Dencher S1743546 Master thesis Crisis and Security Management Faculty Governance and Global Affairs University Leiden Supervisor: Dr. C.F. van den Berg Final version: 23 March 2017 Summary A new functionary made its debut across different parliamentarian systems in in the 1980s and 1990s. Ministers were increasingly faced with a deficiency in both their own capacity and capability to respond adequately to the growing demands placed on them by the civil service, parliament and the then emerging 24-hour media circus. To ensure their own political survival, ministers appointed political advisors to their side. With the first of these appointments in the Netherlands in 1994, political assistants have become a common and accepted sight in the governmental and political elite of the Netherlands. While first being scrutinized as shadowy figures, political assistants are now widely believed to have a positive effect on the workings of government. The first wave of research, domestically and international, found that the political assistants could serve as channels for the unwarranted influence of lobbyists and interests groups due to their function as gatekeepers, and trusted aides, to the minister. However, the first wave of research is seen to be inconclusive on this issue. This thesis has sought to provide an answer to this question by examining the connections between the private military and security industry and political assistants working at the ministry of Defense and if the former uses the latter to exert influence on the Defense policy of the Netherlands.
