coffeehouses

... viennese coffeehouses are not just simply coffehouses. these authentic places with their special interiors – marble tabletops, thonet chairs, and design details ranging from historicism to the 1950's – are an inherent part of viennese history and culture. most of them opened at the fin de siècle, and still have the atmosphere of that period. in coffeehouses you can encounter a unique combination of the two qualities which shape vienna´s special character – "wiener schmäh": charm and friendly humor; and "wiener grant": grouchiness and running commentary on societal and political ineptitudes. viennese coffee and famous viennese cakes like linzer- and sachertorte attract all peopel, from young students and tourists, to those people with newspapers in their hands, who must have spent half their lives there. / coffeehouse literature: in the late 19th and early 20th century, artists and leading writers of the time were inspired by the atmosphere of the cafés and were frequently there to meet, exchange and write. there's a quote which describes the viennese coffeehouse as a place "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill."
