and "wiener grant": grouchiness and running commentary on societal and political ineptitudes. viennese coffee and famous viennese cakes like linzer- and sachertorte attract all peopel, from young students and tourists, to those people with newspapers in their hands, who must have spent half their lives there. / coffeehouse literature: in the late 19th and early 20th century, artists and leading writers of the time were inspired by the atmosphere of the cafés and were frequently there to meet, exchange and write. there's a quote which describes the viennese coffeehouse as a place "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill." 4 café ritter this coffeehouse, located on vienna’s main shopping “mariahilferstraße” is under historic monument protection. address: cafe ritter, mariahilfer straße 73, 1060 vienna u3 neubaugasse, exit amerlingstraße opening hours: monday to saturday: 7.30 a.m. – 10.00 p.m., sunday: 9.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. link: http://caferitter.at (german) café westend the high ceilings and their moulding are special about café westend. address: café westend, mariahilfer straße 128, 1070 vienna u3 westbahnhof opening hours: monday to sunday: 7.00 a.m. until midnight café prückel what makes the café prückel so special is the interior, originally from the 1950’s. many writing students go there since the institute for creative writing at the university of fine arts and the museum of applied arts is across the street. address: café prückel, stubenring 24 (luegerplatz), 1010 vienna u3 stubentor opening hours: monday to sunday: 8.30 a.m. – 10.00 p.m. link: http://www.prueckel.at/ (german) café sperl guests: the authors jörg mauthe, robert menasse and michael köhlmeier. café sperl was featured in the 1995 movie before sunrise, with ethan hawke and julie delpy. address: café sperl, gumpendorfer straße 11, 1060 vienna u2 museumsquartier opening hours: monday to saturday: 7.00 a.m. – 11.00 p.m. sunday: 11.00 a.m. – 8.00 p.m. link: http://www.cafesperl.at/ (german) café museum originally designed by the architect adolf loos in 1899 guests: the painters gustav klimt and egon schiele, the writers karl kraus and robert musil as well as the architect adolf loos address: café museum, operngasse 7 (karlsplatz), 1010 vienna u2 karlsplatz opening hours: 5 monday to sunday: 8.00 a.m. until midnight link: http://www.cafemuseum.at/ (german) café hawelka café hawelka was opened in 1936 by leopold and josefine hawelka. guests have been: h.c. artmann, conrad beyer, helmut qualtinger, andy warhol address: café hawelka, dorotheergasse 6, 1010 vienna u1 stephansplatz opening hours: monday to wednesday: 8.00 a.m. until midnight thursday to saturday: 08.00 a.m. – 1.00 a.m. sunday and public holidays: 10.00 a.m. until midnight link: http://www.hawelka.at (german) phil café and shop in one. readings, concerts, books, dvds, magazines, cds, records, furniture shopping. address: phil, gumpendorfer straße 10-12, 1010 vienna u2 museumsquartier opening hours: monday: 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. tuesday to sunday: 9 – 1 a.m. link: www.phil.info city winery (heuriger) zum gschupften ferdl named after a viennese song, this “heuriger” serves mostly organic food & drinks and is located in the central 6th district of vienna. jukebox-music from austrian and especially viennese sound studios, thursday evenings live music, friday evenings electronic music, saturday nights viennese djanes and djs. address: zum gschupftn ferdl, windmühlgasse 20, 1060 vienna u3 neubaugasse or u4 kettenbrückengasse opening times: monday to saturday: 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. link: http://www.zumgschupftnferdl.com/ vienna: guided tours http://www.guides-in-vienna.at/index.php?pid=7&lang=2 6 vienna: events http://events.wien.info/en/ sightseeing: https://www.wien.info/en/sightseeing coffeehouses: https://www.wien.info/en/shopping-wining-dining/coffeehouses/in-the-old-city https://www.wien.info/en/shopping-wining-dining/coffeehouses/around-the-old-city the viennese “heuriger”: https://www.wien.info/en/shopping-wining-dining/wine/heurige-2 7 .
