SPECIES DISTRIBUTED IN BURSA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS Fatma Büşra ÖZLÜ Bursa Uludağ University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Biology Supervisor: Doç. Dr. Gül KUŞAKSIZ In this study, Morphological, anatomical, chemical, ethnobotanical and ecological properties of Gentiana L. (Gentianaceae) taxa, which spread in Bursa and its surroundings, were investigated. In our country, the genus which is predominantly spreading in alpine regions has three taxa that spread in Bursa Uludağ. These taxa are; Gentiana lutea subsp. symphyandra (Murb.) Hayek, Gentiana verna subsp. balcanica Pritchard and Gentiana asclepiadea L. In the morphology section of the study, the root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit characteristics of taxa were determined, photographs were taken and a distinction key was prepared by making descriptions. In the anatomical study, the trunk, underground organ and leaf cross sections and leaf surface sections of three taxa were taken and the properties and measurements of their tissues were determined. In addition, photographs of the cross sections were taken and added to the study. In chemical study, oil obtained from dried rhizomes of G. lutea subsp. symhyandra and G. asclepiadea taxa by microdistillation method was examined by GC and GC / MS. The results are given in the relevant section in tables. In the ethnobotanical research of G. lutea L. taxon, which has a medical effect; Dried rhizomes have been previously used as appetite enhancers, but due to the excessive collection of plants, it has been determined that they are not widely used by humans today and the aboveground parts are given to animals as feed. In the ecological study, pH, total salt, CaCO , saturation, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium amounts 3 were determined in soil samples taken from 0 - 30 cm depth in the area where plant samples were collected. In addition, according to the results and on-site observations, the ecological characteristics of taxa have been determined. • Aspects of the Biology and Taxonomy of British Myrmecophilous Root Aphids
Aspects of the biology and taxonomy of British myrmecophilous root aphids. by Richard George PAUL, BoSc.(Lond.),17.90.(Glcsgow). Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosopk,. of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial Colleao Decemi)or 1977. Dopartaent o:vv. .;:iotory)c Cromwell Road. 1.0;AMOH )t=d41/: -1- ABSTRACT. This thesis concerns the biology and taxonomy of root feeding aphids associated with British ants. A root aphid for the purposes of this thesis is defined as an aphid which, during at least part of its life cycle feeds either (a) beneath the normal soil surface or (b) beneath a tent of soil that has been placed over it by ants. The taxonomy of the genera Paranoecia and Anoecia has been revised and some synonomies proposed. Chromosome numbers have been discovered for Anoecia spp. and are used to clarify the taxonomy. The biology of Anoecia species has been studied and new facts about their life cycles have been discovered. A key is given to the British r European, African and North American species of Anoeciinae and this is included in a key to British myrmecophilous root aphids. Suction trap catches (1968-1976) from about twenty British traps have been used as a record of seasonal flight patterns for root aphids. All the Anoecia species caught in 1975 and 1976 were identified on the basis of new taxonomic work. Catches which had formerly all been identified as Anoecia corni were found to be A. corni, A. varans and A. furcata. The information derived from the catches was used to plot relative abundance and distribution maps for the three species.

While its value in terms of food crops and medicinal plants has recently been subject to scientific research, the ornamental value of many Caucasian plant species has not yet been fully recognized. In order to assess the orna- mental value of the Caucasian flora, vegetation data from two mountainous study regions in Georgia (n = 958 species, mostly grassland vegetation) was compared with the product range of ornamental plants in Germany using an online plant shopping guide. Characterization of the 150 plant species listed in both databases revealed that 121 species are present in central Europe and 117 species are natives or archaeophytes in Germany.

Seven secoiridoids, five C-glucoflavones and three xanthones, were identified. Swertiamarin derivatives, namely eustomorusside (2), eustomoside (3) and septemfidoside (5), were detected in G. lutea for the first time. Concentrations of five constituents (swertiamarin, gentiopicrin, isovitexin, mangiferin and isogentisin) were determined. The relationship between concentrations of γ-pyrones and altitude was observed with statistically significant correlation (r = 0.94). The extracts were also evaluated for their content of total phenolics, and antiradical and cytotoxic activities.
