  • What Is a Tree in the Mediterranean Basin Hotspot? a Critical Analysis
Médail et al. Forest Ecosystems (2019) 6:17 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40663-019-0170-6 RESEARCH Open Access What is a tree in the Mediterranean Basin hotspot? A critical analysis Frédéric Médail1* , Anne-Christine Monnet1, Daniel Pavon1, Toni Nikolic2, Panayotis Dimopoulos3, Gianluigi Bacchetta4, Juan Arroyo5, Zoltán Barina6, Marwan Cheikh Albassatneh7, Gianniantonio Domina8, Bruno Fady9, Vlado Matevski10, Stephen Mifsud11 and Agathe Leriche1 Abstract Background: Tree species represent 20% of the vascular plant species worldwide and they play a crucial role in the global functioning of the biosphere. The Mediterranean Basin is one of the 36 world biodiversity hotspots, and it is estimated that forests covered 82% of the landscape before the first human impacts, thousands of years ago. However, the spatial distribution of the Mediterranean biodiversity is still imperfectly known, and a focus on tree species constitutes a key issue for understanding forest functioning and develop conservation strategies. Methods: We provide the first comprehensive checklist of all native tree taxa (species and subspecies) present in the Mediterranean-European region (from Portugal to Cyprus). We identified some cases of woody species difficult to categorize as trees that we further called “cryptic trees”. We collected the occurrences of tree taxa by “administrative regions”, i.e. country or large island, and by biogeographical provinces. We studied the species-area relationship, and evaluated the conservation issues for threatened taxa following IUCN criteria. Results: We identified 245 tree taxa that included 210 species and 35 subspecies, belonging to 33 families and 64 genera. It included 46 endemic tree taxa (30 species and 16 subspecies), mainly distributed within a single biogeographical unit.

  • Conceptual Design Documentation
Appendix A: Conceptual Design Documentation APPENDIX A Conceptual Design Documentation June 2019 A-1 APPENDIX A: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DOCUMENTATION The environmental analyses in the NEPA and CEQA documents for the proposed improvements at Oceano County Airport (the Airport) are based on conceptual designs prepared to provide a realistic basis for assessing their environmental consequences. 1. Widen runway from 50 to 60 feet 2. Widen Taxiways A, A-1, A-2, A-3, and A-4 from 20 to 25 feet 3. Relocate segmented circle and wind cone 4. Installation of taxiway edge lighting 5. Installation of hold position signage 6. Installation of a new electrical vault and connections 7. Installation of a pollution control facility (wash rack) CIVIL ENGINEERING CALCULATIONS The purpose of this conceptual design effort is to identify the amount of impervious surface, grading (cut and fill) and drainage implications of the projects identified above. The conceptual design calculations detailed in the following figures indicate that Projects 1 and 2, widening the runways and taxiways would increase the total amount of impervious surface on the Airport by 32,016 square feet, or 0.73 acres; a 6.6 percent increase in the Airport’s impervious surface area. Drainage patterns would remain the same as both the runway and taxiways would continue to sheet flow from their centerlines to the edge of pavement and then into open, grassed areas. The existing drainage system is able to accommodate the modest increase in stormwater runoff that would occur, particularly as soil conditions on the Airport are conducive to infiltration. Figure A-1 shows the locations of the seven projects incorporated in the Proposed Action.

  • Crossing Borders Program Book of Abstracts
25th International EUCARPIA Symposium Section Ornamentals CROSSING BORDERS PROGRAM BOOK OF ABSTRACTS June 28th- July 2nd 2015 Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research Melle, Belgium Welcome Dear participant, EUCARPIA aims to promote scientific and technical co-operation in the field of plant breeding in order to foster its further development. To achieve this purpose, the Association organizes on a regular basis meetings to discuss general or specific problems from all fields of plant breeding and genetic research. The section Ornamentals was founded in 1971 and a first meeting took place in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This year the twenty-fifth symposium is hosted in Melle, Belgium. Ornamental breeding is involved with a great number of species and a continuous demand for novelties. The importance of ornamentals cannot be underestimated as they contribute to the daily joy of life. They decorate our homes, landscapes and gardens, ameliorate climate, abate the harmful aspects of pollutions and much more. “Crossing borders”, the central theme of this symposium, expresses our intention to go beyond traditional ornamental plant breeding. Recent boosts in fundamental knowledge offers opportunities for ornamentals. Interaction and discussion between plant breeders and scientists create new ideas. We are excited that besides the lectures of leading experts also 130 scientific contributions from all over the world are presented. Parallel with the scientific sessions we scheduled two workshops. In these workshops active participation of breeding companies will be stimulated. A post-symposium tour gives you the opportunity to discover the dynamic and innovative ornamental plant breeding industry in Belgium. It is my personal wish that the symposium can be the start of new longstanding collaborations and friendships.

  • Bocconea 25, Results of the Seventh Iter Mediterraneum
Bocconea 25: 5-127 doi: 10.7320/Bocc25.005 Version of Record published online on 9 July 2012 Werner Greuter Results of the Seventh “Iter Mediterraneum” in the Peloponnese, Greece, May to June 1995 (Occasional Papers from the Herbarium Greuter – N° 1) Abstract Greuter, W.: Results of the Seventh “Iter Mediterraneum” in the Peloponnese, Greece, May to June 1995. (Occasional Papers from the Herbarium Greuter – N° 1). — Bocconea. 25: 5-127. 2012. — ISSN 1120-4060 (print), 2280-3882 (online). The material collected during OPTIMA’s Iter Mediterraneum VII to the Peloponnese in 1995 has been revised. It comprises 2708 gatherings, each with 0 to 31 duplicates, collected in 53 numbered localities. The number of taxa (species or subspecies) represented is 1078. As many of the areas visited had been poorly explored before, a dozen of the taxa collected turned out to not to have been previously described, of which 9 (7 species, 2 subspecies) are described and named here (three more were published independently in the intervening years). They belong to the genera Allium, Asperula, Ballota, Klasea, Lolium, Minuartia, Nepeta, Oenanthe, and Trifolium. New combinations at the rank of subspecies (3) and variety (2) are also published. One of the species (Euphorbia aulacosperma) is first recorded for Europe, and several are new for the Peloponnese or had their known range of distribution significantly expanded. Critical notes draw attention to these cases and to taxonomic problems yet to be solved. An overview of the 11 Itinera Mediterranea that have taken place so far is presented, summarising their main results. Keywords: Flora of Greece, Peloponnese, Itinera Mediterranea, OPTIMA, new species, new com- binations, Allium, Asperula, Ballota, Klasea, Lolium, Minuartia, Nepeta, Oenanthe, Trifolium.
