Adelina Cüberyan v. Fürstenberg Founder of ART for The World, curator and film producer Member of the advisory board (ARTPORT_making waves) Website: www.artfortheworld.net Adelina Cüberyan v. Fürstenberg, Swiss citizen, Armenian origin, is a renowned international art curator and independent film producer. A pioneer in the field, she is known for broadening contemporary art and cinema to include a multicultural approach. Founder and the first Director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain of Geneva and Director of Le Magasin at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain of Grenoble, and its School of Curators awarded by the Jury of the Biennale of Venice in 1993. In 1995 she founded ART for The World – an NGO associated to UNDPI (the UN Department of Public Information) and partner of SESC Regional Direction Sao Paulo, Brazil. The NGO was created in the context of the 50th anniversary of the UN and the art exhibition Dialogues of Peace. Its goals are the dissemination of projects and links between contemporary culture and Human Rights. During the past years, she has been invited to organize numerous large-scale art projecte around the world for the UN and its agencies, among them : In 1998-99 The Edge of Awarenss, to mark the 50th anniversary if WHO in Geneva, NY, Sao Paulo and New delhi and Milan ; in 2000 P&T the 50t annovesary of HCR. In 2008 she was appointed by UNHCR and the European Commission to produce « Stories on Human Rights », 22 short fiction films for the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in 2010 followed by with the series of seven other short films « Then And Now, Beyond Borders and Differences », commissioned by the UN Alliance of the Civilizations and the Council of Europe. -

The only thing to do is to take this to the bitter end, so that no one can say that when things became difficult, I ran away.” Anna Politkovskaya Rama Yade, French Minister of State responsible for Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Executive Summary The inter-institutional initiative launched by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the United Nations to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) reaffirmed and illustrated its recognised universality and transcendence. Divided into two panels, one focussing on the instruments for the protection of Human Rights and the other on the right to freedom of expression, the conference highlighted the singular admiration for all those working for other's rights. Tuesday 7 October Opening Speeches Mr Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission, opened the conference by underlying the importance of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Declaration as cornerstones of the defence of human rights worldwide. He recalled that the EU has aligned itself with the protection of those defending human rights through the approval of the EU Guidelines on HRDs. -

Rekha Rodwittiya The Rituals of Memory: Personal Folklores and Other Tales Aicon Gallery Exhibition February 4th – February 27th, 2016 Press Preview & Opening Reception: Thursday, February 4th 6:00pm – 9:00pm 35 Great Jones St., New York NY 10012 Aicon Gallery New York is proud to announce Rekha Rodwittiya – The Rituals of Memory: Personal Folklores and Other Tales, the first major showing of the artist’s work in New York City in two decades. A pioneering feminist artist and voice from the Indian subcontinent, Rodwittiya rose to prominence throughout the 80s and 90s through her strikingly idiosyncratic depictions of female forms, rituals and spaces. Drawn from both the personal experiences and memories of her own feminist journey and the larger historical struggles of women through the centuries, her work was an early rejection of the tropes of a male dominated South Asian art world and its traditionally voyeuristic treatment of the female subject. This exhibition is the second in a series of exhibitions re-examining figuration in Modern and Contemporary South Asian art to be held at Aicon Gallery, New York over the next two years. Rekha Rodwittiya’s iconic, starkly delineated female figures are often viewed as concrete embodiments of the artist’s complex psychological insights into the personal and historical struggles and day-to-day challenges of modern womanhood. The simply rendered yet powerful, sometimes confrontational, figures in Rekha Rodwittiya, Rekha @ 50, 2008, Acrylic and oil on these works seem to simultaneously stand as symbols of an canvas, 84 x 60 in. ongoing struggle in the feminist realm, while refusing to be reduced to objects for visual consumption or easy interpretation. -

The entrance to the ground floor of the Israeli Pavilion at the Venice Biennale provokes an immediate sense of astonishment, awakened by the transformation of the pristine exhibition space into an abandoned, mold-covered site. A second glance beyond the patches of mold, which expand from the center of the floor out towards the corners and up the walls and columns, reveals pale traces of ornament, vestiges of a long-gone human presence. Insight then arrives in a flash through bodily sensations – feet touching the roughly textured floor, the scent of coffee combined with the odor of mold wafting down from the intermediate level: we have entered a deserted building. Yet before we can determine whether we are surrounded by real mold or by an image of mold laboriously created by the artist, the following becomes clear: this mold tells a story about wear and neglect, about the passage of time or about a time following a calamity. Welcome to the Israeli Pavilion! * * * "Sun Stand Still" (2017), Gal Weinstein's site-specific installation, structures the pavilion's internal space, which extends over three floors, into an ensemble shaped by a formal and thematic flow. Each part of the exhibition is directly related to works created by Weinstein over the past decade, so that his entire oeuvre seems to have been woven into a single, cohesive whole. This essay explores the conceptual connections between the different parts of this project, while examining them in relation to Weinstein's earlier works. -

Pavilion of Israel at the 57th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia Gal Weinstein: Sun Stand Still Curator: Tami Katz-Freiman Preview: 10–12 May 2017 Inauguration of the Israeli Pavilion: Thursday, May 11, 1.00 p.m. Exhibition: 13 May – 26 November 2017 Sun Stand Still, Gal Weinstein’s project for the Israeli pavilion at the 57th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, is a new, site-specific installation which explores the human desire to stop time. Reflecting a fascination with actual and potential forms of creation and destruction, progress and devastation, this project critically engages with the mythological and Romantic images embedded in Israel’s collective memory. Each part of the exhibition is related to works created by Weinstein over the past decade, so that his entire oeuvre is woven into a single, cohesive installation. The installation's title refers to the biblical miracle performed by the ancient Israelite leader Joshua Bin-Nun, who sought to win his battle against the kings of Canaan before darkness fell. By commanding the sun to stop in its course, Bin-Nun attempted to arrest the passage of time. The central axis of the project – Moon over Ayalon Valley – is a representation of this biblical miracle. The exhibition transforms the national pavilion – both physically and metaphorically – into an abandoned site; a desolate, moldy and decaying building whose days of glory have long passed, a ghostly space pervaded by signs of decline. Jezreel Valley in the Dark – a floor installation on the intermediate level – consists of puzzle-shaped agricultural plots filled with coffee dregs. -

The first African artist to receive the Jury’s Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1999, his work reveals the affinities and similarities, sometimes unsuspected, that can exist between different cultures. In these two never before seen installations, the artist highlights both the permanent collection of the oldest residence in Geneva, as well as the UN archives stored in the Library of the Palace of Nations. Project conceived, organized and realized by ART for The World - NGO associated with the UNDPI, Department of Public Information of the UN.
