Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 An Exhibition and Public Program Touring Internationally, 2016-2017 Roee Rosen, still from Confessions Coming Soon, 2007, video. 8:40 minutes. Video, possibly more than any other form of communication, has shaped the world in radical ways over the past half century. It has also changed contemporary art on a global scale. Its dual “life” as an agent of mass communication and an artistic medium is especially intertwined in Israel, where artists have been using video artistically in response to its use in mass media and to the harsh reality video mediates on a daily basis. The country’s relatively sudden exposure to commercial television in the 1990s coincided with the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, and major shifts in internal politics. Artists responded to this in what can now be considered a “renaissance” of video art, with roots traced back to the ’70s. An examination of these pieces, many that have rarely been presented outside Israel, as well as recent, iconic works from the past two decades offers valuable lessons on how art and culture are shaped by larger forces. Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 traces the development of contemporary video practice in Israel and highlights work by artists who take an incisive, critical perspective towards the cultural and political landscape in Israel and beyond. Showcasing 35 works, this program includes documentation of early performances, films and videos, many of which have never been presented outside of Israel until now. Informed by the international 1 history of video art, the program surveys the development of the medium in Israel and explores how artists have employed technology and material to examine the unavoidable and messy overlap of art and politics. -

Tsibi Geva selected to represent Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia 5 February 2015 – Tsibi Geva has been selected to present Archeology of the Present for the Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. Geva, who lives and works in Tel Aviv, is one of Israel’s most prominent and influential artists, and has exhibited extensively in major exhibitions across Israel, America, and Europe. Geva works in diverse media, his work often pushing beyond its physical limits into unique large-scale site- specific installations. Archeology of the Present will cover both the exterior and interior of the Pavilion, and will encompass the formal and thematic characteristics of Geva’s work as it has evolved throughout his career. In a year when curator Okuwi Enwezor, proposes to focus on All the World’s Futures, Geva’s site-specific, all-encompassing installation may also be read with regard to the current state of humanity and the world. Geva’s work contains numerous layers of significance shaped by processes of figuration and abstraction, revelation and concealment. The question of painting in particular, and of the art object in general, is present in his work alongside political and cultural questions, which simultaneously camouflage and enhance one another. Employing disruption and displacement, repetition and accumulation, Geva makes hybrid works that open up new discursive channels. Archeology of the Present will present paintings alongside sculptural installations and abandoned and manipulated objects, while abolishing the hierarchical distinctions between artistic mediums and structure. In doing so, it will give expression to Geva’s ongoing concern with elements related to the notion of ‘home’ – including terrazzo tiles, windows, shutters, lattices, cement blocks; elements which exist as fragments of what once was or could in principle constitute a home. -

The exhibition features a new body of work created over the past two years, defined by Geva’s focus on deconstruction and abstraction to convey the emotional and cultural tenor of his surroundinGs. Motifs of terrazzo tiles, stone walls, and latticework, which have been prevalent in Geva’s paintinGs since the nineteen-nineties, are pushed to the forefront in these new works. These Mediterranean urban patterns, once abstracted, become a reflection of a collective subconscious, revealinG a conflicted, restless landscape where borders are in a constant neGotiation. The various patterns are applied in layers that flow into one another, in entropic fashion. The entrance to the ground floor of the Israeli Pavilion at the Venice Biennale provokes an immediate sense of astonishment, awakened by the transformation of the pristine exhibition space into an abandoned, mold-covered site. A second glance beyond the patches of mold, which expand from the center of the floor out towards the corners and up the walls and columns, reveals pale traces of ornament, vestiges of a long-gone human presence. Insight then arrives in a flash through bodily sensations – feet touching the roughly textured floor, the scent of coffee combined with the odor of mold wafting down from the intermediate level: we have entered a deserted building. Yet before we can determine whether we are surrounded by real mold or by an image of mold laboriously created by the artist, the following becomes clear: this mold tells a story about wear and neglect, about the passage of time or about a time following a calamity. Welcome to the Israeli Pavilion! * * * "Sun Stand Still" (2017), Gal Weinstein's site-specific installation, structures the pavilion's internal space, which extends over three floors, into an ensemble shaped by a formal and thematic flow. Each part of the exhibition is directly related to works created by Weinstein over the past decade, so that his entire oeuvre seems to have been woven into a single, cohesive whole. This essay explores the conceptual connections between the different parts of this project, while examining them in relation to Weinstein's earlier works. -

Pavilion of Israel at the 57th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia Gal Weinstein: Sun Stand Still Curator: Tami Katz-Freiman Preview: 10–12 May 2017 Inauguration of the Israeli Pavilion: Thursday, May 11, 1.00 p.m. Exhibition: 13 May – 26 November 2017 Sun Stand Still, Gal Weinstein’s project for the Israeli pavilion at the 57th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, is a new, site-specific installation which explores the human desire to stop time. Reflecting a fascination with actual and potential forms of creation and destruction, progress and devastation, this project critically engages with the mythological and Romantic images embedded in Israel’s collective memory. Each part of the exhibition is related to works created by Weinstein over the past decade, so that his entire oeuvre is woven into a single, cohesive installation. The installation's title refers to the biblical miracle performed by the ancient Israelite leader Joshua Bin-Nun, who sought to win his battle against the kings of Canaan before darkness fell. By commanding the sun to stop in its course, Bin-Nun attempted to arrest the passage of time. The central axis of the project – Moon over Ayalon Valley – is a representation of this biblical miracle. The exhibition transforms the national pavilion – both physically and metaphorically – into an abandoned site; a desolate, moldy and decaying building whose days of glory have long passed, a ghostly space pervaded by signs of decline. Jezreel Valley in the Dark – a floor installation on the intermediate level – consists of puzzle-shaped agricultural plots filled with coffee dregs.
