Re: 2019 Abingdon Marathon Road Closures Notice

Sir / Madam,

The 2019 Abingdon Marathon, incorporating the Oxfordshire County Marathon Championships and Army AA Marathon Championships, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 20th October. This will be the 37th running of the race since its inception in 1982. The race organisers realise that the passage of a large group of runners such as this, particularly in the early stages of the race when they are bunched closely together, has the potential to affect other people along the route. We also appreciate that the success of the event depends on your support, and hope that by providing advance warning any disruption can be minimised. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the race may cause. Marshals, whose primary function is to ensure the safety of runners and other road users, will be placed at strategic points around the course. However, you will understand that only the key points can be covered, i.e. principal junctions and blind bends, so there will inevitably be places which are out of sight of a marshal and where increased vigilance will be necessary. Also for reasons of safety, bearing in mind the restricted width of the lanes on which the race takes place, it would be greatly appreciated if roads adjacent to junctions and blind bends are kept free of parked cars. For reasons of safety road closures have been scheduled, in conjunction with the Oxfordshire County Council (the Highways Authority), as detailed in the Special Event Order Notice below: OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL (ABINGDON MARATHON) (SPECIAL EVENT) ORDER 2019

NOTICE is given that on 14 October 2019 Oxfordshire County Council proposes to make the above order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
