Conservation Target Area Updates Chilterns Escarpment North (CTA Lead - Chilterns AONB) BBOWT reports that they have a new grazier on Hill, which is very important for keeping the chalk grassland in good condition. BBOWT reserve wardens have been using their Alpine Tractor at Chinnor, Oakley and with Nicole, Giles and volunteers clearing scrub and brambles. They are also working with Natural to explore how they work closer with the use of the Alpine Tractor, training and volunteers. The Forest school based at is thriving and may expand. One of the big issues at Warburg and Chinnor Hill is Ash dieback; they have done a survey on the potential impact on their reserves and will use that information to inform future management.

2. OCVA Charity and Volunteer Awards 2017 On 26th January there will be an nformal session led by Lord-Lieutenant Tim Stevenson OBE will provide guidance in writing a nomination for the annual OCVA Charity and Volunteer Awards which are presented to honour the work done by groups and individuals.The awards ceremony for 2017 will take place on Tuesday 9th May.To book or for more information: https://ocva.org.uk/launch-of-ocva-charity-and-volunteer-awards- nominations/

3. A petition to develop a GCSE in Natural History. Re-engagement with Britain's natural history has never been more urgent. Young people need the skills to name, observe, monitor and record wildlife. It is vital to understand the contribution nature makes to our lives physically, culturally, emotionally and scientifically both in the past and today. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/176749

4. Lemon Slug Gardeners and dog walkers in Oxfordshire are being asked to help find a very rare species of slug. The Species Recovery Trust has launched an appeal for people across the county to help search for the elusive Lemon Slug. The Lemon Slug (Malacolimax tenellus) is a rare mollusc, vibrant yellow with dark tentacles.It is usually up to about 4cm in length and feeds on mushrooms, so is often seen on or near wild mushrooms.The Species Recovery Trust is a conservation charity that aims to protect the rarest species in the country, even if they are not the prettiest or most popular creatures. Anyone who spots a bright yellow slug on their travels in Oxfordshire is asked to email [email protected]

Oxfordshire Spring Recorder's Conference 4th March The Spring Recorders’ Conference is an opportunity to come out of winter hibernation for discussion about local recording and talks about different challenges in restoration of species and habitats. 7. National Meadows Day 1st July 2017 National Meadows Day is a growing event which celebrates wildflower grasslands, providing an opportunity for you to showcase the amazing wildflowers and species you have on your sites and in your communities. 8. 2017 is 800th Anniversary of Charter of the Forest A national Charter for Trees, Woods and People will launch November 6th 2017 on the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest. Project Officer - Evenlode Natural Flood Management (NFM) - deadline 23rd Jan Based in District Council Witney offices, £25,000 - £30,000 + 9% pension contribution pro rata subject to qualifications and experience, 26 hours/week.The post is for 2 years fixed term with potential to extend for a further 3 year. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a good working knowledge of environmental issues and legislation in relation to flood and water management, and excellent communication skills.The Project Officer will be the focus point of all information, planning and reporting on a programme of NFM projects, which form the first trial in the Thames Basin to implement land and channel interventions for multiple benefits, including flood risk, water quality and habitat creation. 18. TOE2 update January 2017 Providing funding and support for locally based projects which improve biodiversity, improve access to green spaces and/or contribute to the Low Carbon Agenda.

Biodiversity and access to green space in the Thame area TOE2 has funds available specifically for access and/or biodiversity improvements at a publicly accessible green space in Thame. The project might include creating or improving wildlife habitats, creating or improving access and rights of way, or purchase of land. Funding of £6,012 is available for a project that fits these criteria, but applications for sums up to about £10,000 may be considered. We would be pleased to hear from local organisations that may have an eligible project. 19. The Race to Extinction? Wood Warblers in the New Forest, Tony Davis Wednesday 11th January 201, 7.45pm Although they have not received the same publicity as many other species, Wood Warblers are one of the most rapidly declining species in Britain. The decline seems to be strongest on the southern and eastern edges of its range. Over the last six years, Tony has been studying the most south-easterly population in the UK in an attempt to understand what is causing such a rapid decline. 24. Unravelling the story of an alien invader - the harlequin ladybird 17th January 7.45pm Prof. Helen Roy (C.E.H.) The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, was first recorded in the UK in 2004. What followed is a remarkable story of inspiring contributions from people across the country furthering our understanding of the ecology of this invasive non-native species. School visits and event dates variable Aston Rowant NNR near Watlington is one of the country’s most important nature reserves. Site management tasks are led by our experienced site managers and may include scrub clearance, path maintenance, fencing, species protection, interpretation and even livestock husbandry. Members of the group can do tasks according to their ability and will gain valuable skills for career development or personal achievement as well as enjoying the social side of volunteering! HILL END CENTRE, EYNSHAM ROAD, Volunteers are invited to help maintain the Centre’s grounds both as a wildlife conservation and educational resource. There's a variety of tasks: footpath maintenance, weeding and cutting out the invasive plants; protecting habitats and food for wildlife; occasional planting and pruning; building maintenance; surveying and keeping records of the plants, birds, butterflies and bees. KINGWOOD AND PEPPARD COMMON VOLUNTEERS (KPCV) Kingwood and Peppard Common Volunteers (KPCV) meet on the first Monday and third Saturday of each month. The work parties run from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and volunteers are welcome for all or any part of that time. The commons are located between the B481 and Road and our work consists mainly of heathland management – caring for the heather in the woodland glades, removing competing species such as bracken, bramble and silver birch. We also maintain and improve the many informal footpaths on the commons. The date for the last work party of 2016 Sat 17-Dec-16. The work party leader will visit Kingwood Common before deciding where the group will meet and what tasks will be undertaken.

LOWER WINDRUSH VALLEY PROJECT VOUNTEER GROUP Small, friendly volunteer group that meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month to carry out practical conservation tasks at either Standlake Common or Rushy Common Nature Reserves. LYE VALLEY (off the Slade, Oxford) Volunteers are invited to help maintain and remediate the rare fenland habitat in the North Fen LNR and SSSI areas, for the benefit of all wildlife. Work sessions are currently Wednesday mornings, 9-11am, but please check with Judy Webb: [email protected] or 01865 377487. There's a variety of tasks: chopping back scrub, weeding out nettles, shearing or scything specific areas while protecting habitats and food for wildlife; occasional planting; Come for entire sessions or just the occasional hour. OTMOOR We require volunteer help in the areas of habitat management and reserve maintenance. All tasks are vital for conservation of the site and for retaining good access to, and around the reserve. Working as part of the reserve team you will have the opportunity to learn about the reserve and develop and build up new skills. This is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation. Enthusiasm and an interest in conservation are essential. A variety of skills are needed from habitat management and estate maintenance. A good level of fitness is essential. You will need an up-to-date tetanus injection and to enjoy working in a team. OXFORD CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS No experience is needed. We'll provide all the tools and training and will collect volunteers from the two pick-up points. 1) Outside the Lamb and Flag on St. Giles at 9.20 am 2) Outside the Tesco on Cowley Road at 9.30 am We aim to return you by 5.30 pm. You don't have to tell us that you're coming, just turn up at a pickup point on Sunday morning, or meet us at the site itself if you prefer. We provide tools, training and hot drinks. Under-16s welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bring a packed lunch and wear old clothes. We aim to be back in Oxford by 5:30pm at the latest. OXFORD COUNTRYSIDE RANGERS Join our friendly Thursday group to carry out practical land management tasks across all the Oxford City Council sites. Our regular volunteering group is a great way to gain practical conservation experience, meet new people, get fit and spend time in the great outdoors. OXGROW COMMUNITY GARDEN OxGrow is a friendly community garden open to all. We run gardening sessions in central Oxford, just off Abingdon Road, every Sunday from 1pm-5pm and Wednesday evenings from 5pm during summer. Come and help Oxford Urban Wildlife Group to manage this thriving nature park, which now has SLINC status. You can choose your task from a variety of jobs. A warm welcome guaranteed.
