Kõige rohkem teatakse CCd vahest arvuka teT sarjade kaudu, nagu näiteks “Eesti mõisad” (mis alates 1999. aastast on pidanud vahele jätma vaid ühe, kriisiaasta suve 2010) või “Toompea muusika salong”, teatakse ka kontserte saatvaid loenguid ning ansam bli seost metseenlusega; tänavuste mõisakont sertidega näiteks koguti raha Uderna mõisa välis valgustuse fondi. Kuid tegevussuundi on CCl aastate jooksul üha juurde tulnud. Ansambli kõrvale on tek kinud agentuur, on salvestatud kaks CDd, “Beauty of History” (2005) ja “Jõulud iidses Tallinnas” (2007); omal moel tegutsetakse pedagoogiliseltki: proovi tud on koostööprojekti Kadrioru gümnaasiumiga, mõisakoole toetades kasvatatakse uut kuulajapõlv konda ja lõpuks võib publiku harimiseks pidada ka Corelli Consorti kontserte lahutamatult saatvaid Jüri Kuuskemaa ajaloolisi selgitusi. Kohtun ansambli eestvedaja Mail Sildosega enne proovi Muusikamaja suvises aias, CCl on taas ees mõisakontserdid. Leidsin concerto grosso’de partituurid, is- 11/2012 3 Kas Corelli on isiklik huvi? Imbi Tarum (klavessiin), M. S.: Jah. Selles on mingid väga positiivsed võnked sees. Võibolla just selletõttu ei kõla meil lood igal kontserdil täpselt ühtemoodi. Kui muusikutel tuleb hoog peale, üks nakatab teist, keegi teeb mingeid kaunistusi, teine hoopis teist- suguseid, tulevad välja täiesti erinevad versioonid. CC praegune koosseis on väga hea, me lihtsalt sobime üksteisega. Just see meeldib mulle väga! Nemad ongi praegune tuumik.

This book provides a unique and intriguing insight into current debates concerning the relationship between nation and state Jordan Paul as well as the political management of international image in today’s Europe through an examination of debates on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Europe is a con- tested construct and its boundaries are subject to redefinition. This work aims to advance critical thinking about contempo- rary nation branding and its relationship to, and influence on, Paul Jordan nation building. In particular it focusses on key identity debates The Modern Tale Fairy that the Eurovision Song Contest engendered in Estonia in the run-up to EU accession. The Eurovision Song Contest is an event which is often dismissed as musically and culturally The Modern Fairy Tale: inferior. However, this work demonstrates that it has the capac- ity to shed light on key identity debates and illuminate wider Nation Branding, National Identity socio-political issues. Using a series of in-depth interviews with and the Eurovision Song Contest political elites, media professionals and opinion leaders, this book is a valuable contribution to the growing field of research in Estonia on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Although a number of initiatives to preserve the “sung folklore” of the Nazi ghettos and camps were undertaken soon after the end of the Second World War, Kaczerginski’s magnum opus, the anthology Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs of the Ghettos and Camps), published in New York in 1948, remains unsurpassed to this day as a resource for research in the field of Jewish folk and popular music of the Holocaust period. ii Chapter one of the dissertation recounts Kaczerginski’s life story, from his underprivileged childhood in Vilna, Imperial Russia (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), to his tragic early death in Argentina. It details his political, social and literary development, his wartime involvement in ghetto cultural affairs and the underground resistance, and postwar sojourn from the Soviet sphere to the West. Kaczerginski’s formative years as a politically engaged poet and songwriter are shown to have underpinned his conviction that the repertoire of salvaged Shoah songs provided unique and authentic testimony to the Jewish experience of the war.

I argue that average Soviet citizens’ view of America was primarily informed by, and closely followed that of official propaganda. Deprived of any coherent information about America, Soviet citizens fell back on pre-World War II and even pre-Revolutionary views of America as an incredibly rich yet socially unjust country dominated by an insatiable pursuit of money. While these views did not remain static they adjusted to social and political events--the changes remained on the outer layers and did not touch the foundations of ordinary Soviet people’s image of America.

SOURCES OF INSPIRATION IN SELECTED PIANO WORKS BY SERGEI SLONIMSKY D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Yulia Kozlova, B.M., M.A. ****** The Ohio State University 2005 Document Committee: Approved by: Professor Steven M. Glaser, Adviser Dr. Kenneth T. Williams _________________________ Dr. R. J. David Frego Adviser Graduate Program in Music ABSTRACT Sergei Slonimsky is an important composer, without whom Russian music would be incomplete and less controversial. It is not easy to find composers who, with the same success, utilize virtually every existing classical and modern music genre in their compositions. His output covers opera, symphony, ballet, oratorio, and sonata. He is the author of numerous chamber compositions, music for folk instruments, and teaching pieces for children. His vividly imaginative compositions show a brilliant composer’s mastery. Slonimsky draws on many historical eras and cultural epochs: Antiquity, Middle Ages and Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, and Romanticism. His music consists of a variety of images that contain an abundance of artistic information. However, most of Sergei Slonimsky’s works are unpublished and rarely performed in the United States. Included in the document is a biographical background of the composer as well as a description of his compositional style and accomplishments. The document will focus on the composer’s piano works and the extra-musical stimuli that inspired these compositions. The main emphasis of investigation will be related to the works inspired by music’s sister arts – painting and sculpture (the suite Three Graces and Passing-by Beauty).

THE ART OF NATION-BUILDING: NATIONAL CULTURE AND SOVIET POLITICS IN STALIN-ERA AZERBAIJAN AND OTHER MINORITY REPUBLICS A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Isabelle Ruth Kaplan, A.M. Thesis Advisor: Michael David-Fox , Ph.D . ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the role of national cultural production and consumption in Soviet nation-building, focusing on Stalin-era Moscow’s promotion of cultural interaction among Soviet ethnic groups as a strategy to build individual national identities and a unified Soviet multinational identity simultaneously. Through a case study of Azerbaijan, I trace the emergence in the 1930s of formal sites of national self-expression and cross-cultural exchange such as dekada festivals of national art in Moscow and all-Union celebrations of national poets, arguing that these activities provided the presenting group a valuable opportunity for national self-definition and affirmation. At the same time, the state-mandated sharing of one nation’s art with the all-Union audience was part of a Soviet agenda to demonstrate the universally accessible essence of all culture and to narrow cultural difference through cross-cultural familiarization. More concretely, these events were a means of generating a Soviet multiethnic artistic canon to be disseminated as the heritage of all Soviet people, binding them together through a common cultural identity.
