We are extremely grateful to Alan Dowson, his staff, players and all at Woking Football Club for agreeing to play Westfield FC in a game celebrating the completion of ground works necessary to confirm our status at Step 4 of the National League System. A warm welcome also to our 3 match officials this evening. Without the support of Westfield chairman Steve Perkins, committee members, club volunteers and multiple contractors, together with financial support from the Football Stadium Improvement Fund and Woking Borough Council, it would not have been able to meet the FA and Bostik League ground grading deadline of 31 March. The club are extremely proud of them all and of our improved facility which has seen a list of requirements put in place to meet the inspection, including extra seating, additional turnstiles, external toilets, a standalone refreshments area and infilling of the perimeter railing, as well as extra screening to the external boundary fencing. Westfield started life as a boys club in 1953, moving up into senior football via the Parthenon league in 1962-63, and on into the Surrey Senior League from season 1963-64. In 1978 the SSL changed its name to the Home Counties League (briefly) and then the Combined Counties League in 1979, where the Club had remained in one of its 2 divisions until 2018. Having played on the same ground in Woking Park since their early days, and with the same somewhat dated facilities (floodlights were installed in 1998), Westfield were finally able to acquire new playing facilities in 2011, which included a raised pitch to enhance drainage, and a brand-new Clubhouse. The Club was on the rise on the pitch as well, being promoted from the First Division in 2013 and finally, after the arrival of new boss Tony Reid in 2016, into the Bostik League South Central Division last year, a level never previously achieved. And so it was in July 2018 that Westfield FC proudly took their place in Step 4 for the first time in Tonytheir Reidshort Club Manager history with a 2-2 draw at Uxbridge. The team took a while to find their feet in the new league, with erratic performances and a huge turnover of players, though rarely being totally outplayed. By Christmas they were in mid-table, with a reasonably safe position looking possible, but then 8 wins out of 11 games put them into 3rd place, and we all started to believe a higher finish was actually achievable in our debut season. A couple of defeats and draws in March mean that we still sit in 5th place, the final play-off position, and the last 4 games of the season could see us reach a play-off semi-final in May. However the final table looks, Westfield FC will have had an amazing introduction to higher-level football. We hope you all have an enjoyable evening, and come again soon. Do make the most of our new facilities, and have a safe journey home. In the other semi-final last week Reading Under 23’s eventually overcame Maidenhead United via the penalty route to gain their place in the final and tonight’s winners will join them in the final at a venue to be announced on the 6th May.

In a drab game of few chances, Hendon took control with goals in the last seven minutes of the first half from Julian Owusu and Belal Aite-Ouakrim. Josh Clarke pulled one back 11 minutes into the second half but Hendon made sure of three precious points when Dave Diedhiou netted six minutes from time. Hendon remain in the relegation places but now trail Thurrock only on goal difference after the Essex club were held to a 1-1 draw at Enfield Town. Harry Honesty put Mark Stimson’s men ahead on nine minutes and Adam Wallace equalised for Town ten minutes later. Wingate, two points ahead of Thurrock, held out for an hour at table-topping Margate. Then John Beales dived to head home a cross from Alex Rhodes, who added a late goal himself to complete a 2-0 victory and maintain Margate’s one-point lead. Hot on their heels, with a game in hand, are Whitehawk, who came from 2-0 down in their derby at Lewes to win 3-2 despite being reduced to ten men.
