I will still be lurking around behind the scenes assisting Scott Savoy with matchday administration and also keeping our website updated. I would like to quickly say thanks to everyone for the feedback I’ve received whilst compiling the Feltham, then Bedfont & Feltham programmes. I’ve tried to make them as interesting as possible. I’ve been editor since 2008 this time around, and was editor back in 1989-1992 of the programme for Feltham, (and then Feltham & Hounslow Borough) back in the day!

Enjoy today’s match and see you again soon. Rob – Editor.

Manager’s Notes

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Walton & Hersham enjoy their short stay with us.

It has been a month since our last home game and in that time we have continued our good run of form and pushed ourselves back up to the right end of the table. We had 2 good away wins at Tooting Bec and Epsom & Ewell respectively and in between Christmas and New Year we gained a valuable point on a tough surface against in form Bagshot. We were disappointed coming away without the 3 points as we spurned more than enough chances to win the game but we take the positives and move on to today.

The reverse fixture in November at the Xcel was a brilliant game for any neutrals watching, it had pretty much everything. Coming out the right side of that game gave our lads an injection of belief which was sorely needed. We have been on a good run since then and we hope to continue that today, but we are under no illusions that we will have to be at our best against a good attacking side who are also very much in the promotion hunt.

Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Introducing Our Visitors – Walton & Hersham FC

Walton-on-Thames F.C. was formed in 1895, and in 1945, following World War II, amalgamated with Hersham F.C. to form Walton & Hersham F.C., the present club. The united club immediately joined the newly formed Corinthian League and followed a poor first season with a hat-trick of Championships and a runners-up position. They also won the Senior Cup for the first time in 1947-48, beating neighbours Kingstonian 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Election to the soon followed and in their first season, 1950-51, Swans finished runners-up and again won the Surrey Senior Cup at Palace, defeating the much vaunted Dulwich Hamlet 2-1.

Great days, big crowds These were halcyon days for the Stompond Lane side and the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final was reached in successive seasons, 1951-52 and 1952-53, only for Swans to go out to Walthamstow Avenue and Harwich & Parkeston respectively. During this period the club enjoyed a tremendous following, and a record crowd of 10,000 were at the Lane in 1952 when the famous Crook Town were the visitors for an Amateur Cup tie. Stars of this era included Swans’ most famous player, England and Great Britain Olympic defender C.R. ‘Jack’ Neale, and the prolific Reg Sentance, still the club’s all-time top scorer. Some lean years followed, although the FA Cup First Round was reached for the first time in 1957-58, Southampton winning 6-1 before 6,000 people at Stompond Lane. Don Stoker’s popular sides of the early 1960’s brought cup fever back to the Lane and there were fine runs again in the FA Amateur Cup. Two late goals by the prolific and popular Brian Jenkins beat the star-studded Wimbledon side in the Surrey Senior Cup Final of 1960-61, and the trophy was retained against Sutton United the following season. After several years of mid-table respectability the appointment of Allen Batsford as manager in 1967 heralded the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history. At the end of his first season, a superb victory over a powerful Wimbledon side in the two legged Final secured the Premier Midweek Floodlit League title, the first of three, followed a year later by the winning of the Athenian League championship for the first time. The FA Cup First Round Proper was again reached in the following two seasons, only for Swans to lose to Barnet 1-0 in 1969-70 and Telford United 5-2 in 1970-71, both games being played at the Lane. The runners-up spot in the League was achieved in both those campaigns and the Surrey Senior Cup came back to Stompond Lane in 1970-71, Woking being defeated 3-0 in the Final. Election to the Isthmian ranks followed, with third place attained in the first season, 1971- 72.

Wembley at last Then followed the most memorable season in the club’s history, 1972-73. The FA Cup First Round barrier was overcome for the first time with Exeter City being defeated 2-1 amid tremendous excitement at the Lane, only for visitors Margate to win by the only goal in the Second Round. Kingstonian were beaten 2-0 in the Surrey Senior Cup Final and the runners-up spot achieved in the League. Then on the 14th of April 1973 the ultimate prize was gained at Wembley when 41,000 people saw a last-minute Roger Connell goal against Slough Town bring the FA Amateur Cup to Stompond Lane, the trophy being won without a goal being conceded, a record never to be equaled. Walton & Hersham FC – continued…

Dave Bassett, Willie Smith and Connell also had the honour of playing for the England Amateur side. The following season brought his Brighton & Hove Albion side to Stompond Lane in the FA Cup First Round, and following a goalless draw, Swans pulled off a sensational result in the replay at The Goldstone Ground, a Clive Foskett hat-trick included in a 4-0 win. Sadly, when Batsford left for Wimbledon the following season the fine team broke up, the crowds drifted away, and relegation soon followed in 1975.

The FA Cup First Round was surprisingly reached in 1975-76, and a young side put on a battling performance at Selhurst Park against Malcolm Allison’s Crystal Palace, only going down 1-0 to a late goal. Barren years followed, with the club several times being close to extinction. In the mid 1980’s the club was proud to have Sir Stanley Matthews as President, but sides flattered to deceive and only a draw in the final game of the 1986-87 season prevented relegation to Division Two.

Promotion After 20 years out of the top-flight, a young side under Neil Price at last gained promotion in 1993-94, and the following season the First Round Proper of the FA Cup was again reached, Swansea City winning 2-0 at the Lane. However Swans’ Centenary celebrations were spoilt by relegation after only two seasons back in the Premier. Under the management of Laurie Craker the team ensured the stay in Division One was as brief as possible, promotion being gained on the last day of the campaign. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division it again proved to be a struggle to remain there, and at the end of the 1999-2000 season Swans finished in bottom spot and relegation again became a reality. Swans had to wait until the 2004-05 season before more success came to Stompond Lane after long-serving player Alan Dowson took over as manager in October. After defeat in his first match in charge, Dowson led the team to a record breaking 13 match winning sequence, fine runs in the FA Trophy and League Cup, and promotion as runners-up in the Ryman League Division One. The Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached for the first time in 31 years, the Swans only losing a thrilling game against AFC Wimbledon 2-1 after extra-time before close to 4,000 people at Woking. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division a poor start to 2006-07 led to Dowson’s early resignation and eventual relegation yet again. Since then Swans remained in Division One, facing relegation fights on several occasions, until 2015-16, when a third from bottom finish finally saw them go down, ending a 45 year unbroken stay in the Isthmian League. At the end of September 2017 Swans were forced to leave their home of 8 decades, Stompond Lane, when it was sold for development, the club moving to a new home at a purpose-built Sports Hub in Waterside Drive. After two good seasons in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, when they finished in fifth and fourth places, a poor 2018-19 led to a bottom place finish and relegation to Division One.

SANTA Claus has been and New Year's Resolutions made. The hectic festive period is over in earnest but for Non-League clubs everywhere, the hard work is just about to begin. So, what can the man with the big white beard possibly bring your club to make the season run-in easier? Or what resolutions could your manager or chairman make to fulfil your club's ambitions? Here's just a few light-hearted ideas that you might want to put on your wish list for 2020... For and Harrogate Town (and perhaps to a lesser extent Sutton United), they're getting to the point where they will need a Plan B. Since installing 3G surfaces, all three clubs have been victims of their own success with both Bromley and Harrogate lying firmly in the National League play-off places going into 2020. But with the EFL refusing to back down and allow club's entry with 3G surfaces, Bromley and Harrogate will have to think again if they are to clear the final promotion hurdle. Sadly, it will mean ripping up the pitches and starting all over again with a grass surface, meaning a loss in vital potential revenue. Safe to say the boardrooms at both Hayes Lane and Wetherby Road will be coming out in cold sweats come April. However, contemplating promotion is a problem most would love, notably John Sheridan and Dean Keates, managers of Chesterfield and Wrexham respectively. For them, I would gift-wrap a magic wand. Incredibly, these two giants of Non-League, pre-season favourites to reclaim their Football League places this season, find themselves languishing in the bottom four of the table and staring down the barrel of football in the sixth tier. Every so often, the Spireites and the Dragons threaten to show the kind of form we know they are capable of but neither can seem to nail down a consistent run to pull themselves out of trouble. Sheridan and Keates are running out time, it's time for the rabbit to emerge from the hat. Winging its way over to Gloucester City and Worcester City for 2020, a return ticket home with both clubs nearing long-awaited homecomings after so long in exile. How about a fairy-tale story for National League leaders Barrow AFC, with the Bluebirds dreaming of a famous Football League return after nearly 50 years in the wilderness, or maybe another case of champagne for Marc White, looking to secure an incredible 12th promotion in charge of Dorking Wanderers? There's always a something for Santa's Little Helpers to do in Non-League football. Happy New Year.

Malcolm Dickenson

Bedfont & Feltham FC is sad to report the news that former Feltham FC player, Malcolm Dickenson, passed away peacefully in his sleep during the night of 5/6 December 2019, at the age of 57, from a suspected heart attack. Although best known for his long association with neighbours Hampton and Staines Town, Malcolm started his club career at Feltham FC. Our sympathies are extended to his family and to his many friends.

Malcolm Dickenson – he never used his middle name, but was known to his team-mates as Dicko – was born on 5th June 1962 in Chiswick. He attended Longford School, Feltham, and had already embarked on his football career prior to earning his four CSEs. He had appeared for both the Hounslow Borough and the Feltham District schools’ representative sides, and joined Feltham FC. During the five seasons he spent at The Arena (1978/9 to 1982/3), he worked his way up through the Youth sides to the First Team. He also added to his representative honours by playing for the Middlesex County Youth side.

He had a brief spell with Malden Vale FC, and then signed for Hampton in 1983/4, where over the course of eleven campaigns he became a stalwart in his favourite left back position. Among his numerous honours with The Beavers, he counted both Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, a host of Man of the Match commendations. He made his First Team début for them on 6th March 1984, the first of his 452 competitive games for the club (all but two of them in the starting XI), in which he scored 23 goals and captained the team throughout his final full season there. To this day, he remains the 5th highest appearance maker in the history of the club now known as Hampton & Richmond Borough, and he was deservedly granted a testimonial by the club. His father, Dennis, was Groundsman at The Beveree, and rarely missed a game in which his son played.

In 1988, he was called up to represent the prestigious Middlesex Wanderers touring team, a selection which spoke volumes not only for a player’s ability but also his character. Sadly, unrest in the Middle East led to the cancellation of the proposed tour to Jordan, but he was still proud to recall his outing for the team against Kidderminster Harriers. In addition, he made numerous appearances at senior level for the Middlesex County FA rep side.

After 23 games for Hampton in the 1993/4 season, Chris Wainwright was able to tempt him across to Wheatsheaf Lane, making his Staines Town début on Boxing morning, 27 December, at Uxbridge. He featured prominently in a remarkable second half of the season for Staines, which included the 14-0 win at Croydon, victory in the Middlesex Charity Cup and Trofeo El Cañuelo, and a runners-up medal in the Southern Combination Cup (Dickenson captained Staines in the semi-final of this competition, against his first club, Feltham).

Despite some injury problems in his second and final season with Staines, which kept him out of the side from the end of February, he played a large part in helping the team finish 6th in Isthmian Division 1, and reaching three cup finals.

It is believed that Malcolm retired from football after leaving The Swans in summer 1995, and that he moved away to the Bournemouth area.

He was married to Kerrie, and they had three children – Hollie, Callum, and Brennan. At the time he was with Staines, the family was living in Feltham, and he worked as a constructor of conservatories, mainly in the Aldershot area. He was keenly interested in all sports.

Thanks to Steve Parsons from Staines Town FC for the information herein.

Our History

Bedfont & Feltham Football club was formed in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Bedfont Football & Social Club with Feltham FC, taking the place of Feltham in the step 6 Combined Counties Division 1. The changes bought some decent results; two 5th place finishes in their first two seasons.

The 2015/16 season saw a runners-up spot, 3 points behind CB Hounslow United and this was good enough for promotion to the Premier Division.

The club only lasted at the higher level for one season, finishing second- bottom and some 13 points adrift of safety. Season 2017-18 saw the club finish in 17th place. In the summer of 2018, Adam Bessent joined from Staines Lammas and their loss was Bedfont & Feltham's gain.

Season 2018-19 started very well for Bedfont & Feltham seeing them unbeaten at the top of the league. Getting off to a cracking start helped: an 11-0 win over Bagshot earned the TalkSPORT 2 'Non-League Team of the Week' award.

The club held their heads high and were one of the forerunners throughout the season; suffering their first league defeat in November. Further losses in January and February saw the crown slip slightly, leading to an eventual fifth-place finish.

In the FA Cup, 2015-16 saw the club's best FA Cup run as they beat London Tigers and AFC Hayes (both after replays). A tough test against AFC Rushden & Diamonds awaited them in the 1st Qualifying Round where the run ended, despite a credible performance in the 2-1 defeat. The FA Vase has proved trickier, the best run being the 2nd Round in 2019 where they lost 1-3 after extra time at Welling Town. Local cup wins include the CCL Division 1 Challenge Cup, lifted in 2015 as they beat Worcester Park 4-3 on penalties in the final as well as the Middlesex Premier Cup a year earlier.

Adam Bessent has brought in Mark Goff as Coach and the club is continuing its foray into youth football, with teams from Under 8s to Under 16s.

The club has retained the FA Charter Standard and looks forward to season 2019-20 with great enthusiasm.
