22 MANAGEMENT & COACHING STAFF

Anthony Millerick : First Team Manager ‘Millers’ is now in his fifth season with the Row. He has guided us to two league titles, two promotions taking us from step 5 to step 3, a Hampshire Senior Cup Semi-Final, and lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup. Tactically astute and, whilst he can be uncompromising, he has a way with his players that engenders loyalty.

Steve Noakes : Assistant Manager Steve became Millers’ number 2 at the end of Septem- ber 2019, having joined the Row as an experienced player ahead of the 2014/15 season, taking on the captaincy. His presence on the pitch, as well as his ability on the ball, helped guide us from the Combined Counties League to the Southern League.

Neil Woodyer : First Team Coach Neil joins us this season, well known to Millers from Neil’s time as assistant manager at Camberley some 10 years ago. Strong in his opinion yet very willing to hear another point of view, Woody’s approachable manner makes him a real asset.

Sam Rafique : First Team Coach Sam holds a UEFA License and is also currently an academy coach with Aldershot Town FC. Into his second season with us, he’s had spells at Fleet Town, Godalming Town & Camberley Town. Affable and very approachable, Sam works incredibly hard for the Club.

Keith Benjamin : Goalkeeping Coach An experienced goalkeeping coach in his second season with us, Keith brings us a wealth of experience and provides specialist goalkeeper mentoring and coaching to our group of talented ‘keepers.

Mark Hurst : First Team Coach One of the highest regarded football coaches locally, Mark has worked as a coaches' coach at both Fulham and Villareal FC. His experience and approach to helping players achieve their best is hugely beneficial.

Mark Povey : Sports Therapist Mark joined us this season from Wealdstone FC. He comes to us with a wealth of experience in the game, and with fresh ideas and techniques regarding physiotherapy, fitness and general well-being which have already benefited the players.

32 CAN WE SUSTAIN IT OFF THE PITCH?

I wrote a piece for the Bashley programme which I think bears repeating, with apologies to anyone who has already read it twice over! Bashley’s history makes fascinating and inspiring, but also troubling reading. It should act as both an inspiration and a warning to all similar clubs, including our own Club.

Bashley is rightly a proud club. They burned bright back in the mid to late nineties and early noughties. In 1990/91 they came close to promotion to the Conference, then had a very good run through to 2010. Now they are back in the Wessex. Clubs like Bashley - not too dissimilar to Hartley, even our crests bear a fair resemblance - can perform almost miraculous things on the pitch, and not because of some minted moneyman behind the scenes.

It comes down to the people within the club, usually a small band of helpers, supporters and organisers under a good chairman. And it needs a vibe around the club that encourages a togetherness on and off the pitch; determined people often stubbornly unwilling to accept that a ‘little club’ cannot play with the ‘big boys’ and that we should stand aside and let them pass us by while we kick around in the back field. It takes people to say “bollocks to that, we can do it!”

I admire Bashley hugely. According to Wikipedia, Bashley has a population of 731 (as of 2011). Yet in 1994/95 they reached the Second Round Proper of the FA Cup, and in a home tie with Swansea ended narrowly losing 1-0. This is a Hampshire Club with an amazing recent history they must be so very proud of.

The worry, of course, is how steep the decline can be when you suddenly look down and realise how high you’ve climbed. The people behind a club give so much that, just like players, they too can feel burned out after a while. Any club is only as successful as the commitment and dedication of the people behind it. It seldom ‘just happens’ - not even when there is an injection of cash - it needs people to come together to make it happen. What we’ve amazingly achieved as a club at Hartley Wintney is because we did just that.

Right now, Hartley Wintney Football Club is straining under the pressures of the heady level we’ve found ourselves playing at. The people in the Club desperately need more help in all departments. Behind the scenes the Club is faced with a struggle every bit as tough as the boys playing out on the pitch. We need new blood coming in to help the running of both the football and social sides.

If we don’t attract the people willing to give their time and continue the great history we’re making, there is, I believe, every chance we will find ourselves back in the CCL quicker than Bashley found themselves back in the Wessex. I’m sure neither club believes it’s simply what the bigger clubs would tell us - ‘it’s where you belong’. Bollocks to that!

Please help - get involved in whatever way appeals to you, on match days, with the admin tasks, media, or in the Clubhouse and organising events. Ask Luke, Phil Blakey, Elayne, Steve Noakes, Millers or any of the members you see around the club, or email me at [email protected] and I’ll pass it on. [ KOB ] 33

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS : 2012/13

We’ve come a very long way as a football club in a relatively short time, and none who were fortunate to be here at the start of our most recent, amazing journey will forget season 2012/13, the season of our Great Escape. This lighthearted look-back, using images I created at the time, comes from our programme of 7th May 2013, when we played at home to third placed Cove FC in our last game of the season, needing a point to be sure of staying in the CCL Premier. Needless to say, we got the point with a 0-0 draw and some incredible defending. The spirit of Hartley Wintney Football Club lies in all the players, coaching staff and supporters who’ve been involved since the club was formed. But surely the spirit was never brighter than during our Great Escape. [ KOB ]

Flight Lieutenant Ashley Lloyd was reported downed by a grenade in the last escape mission codenamed ‘Camberley’ a week ago. Latest des- patches report him to be re- covering back in Blighty, hav- ing blagged his way to a local hospital before managing to get himself home. He suffered a dislocation and leg fracture. Excellent work F.L. Lloyd, con- gratulations on a successful escape and we wish you all the best and expect to see you on parade sometime during the next campaign.

Wing Commander Ben Dillon is reported to be comfortable follow- ing a series of escapes master- minded by himself and fellow Com- manders Minton and Lawler, de- spite heavy pres- sure from the Camp Comman- dant, Herr Mullen. Although on re- stricted rations (he was too big to get through the tunnel at the start of the conflict), Commander Dillon is now leading from the front during missions. We wish him luck during the remainder of the campaign.

RECALLING OUR GREAT ESCAPE

Corporals Atkinson and Hollamby, both having completed multiple successful missions, now held captive in a village near Basinstoklevski. Conditions are reported to be tough but opportunities for escape have recently improved.
