Editor’s Note www.POOLETOWNFC.CO.UK Wow..! How great have the last two games been?!! Firstly a terrific performance and result against Truro City, then a fantastic game away at Salisbury! Having supporters and fans at football matches is a must in my eyes, football without supporters just isn’t the same. You cant beat the atmosphere and what it does for a game of football, it helps create the story of the game and gives players a massive lift. The fans were amazing at Salisbury and in great voice, we hope that continues today, just remember ‘We’re a Family Club!’

What a fantastic start to the season we have been privileged to enjoy. The “new” squad that Tom has put together has gelled very quickly and overnight it seems that the spirit and togetherness that has been a major feature of the sides that Tom has put together during his 16/17 years at the helm has yet again been reproduced in the current crop of players. Quite apart from a highly impressive set of results against good quality opposition the standard of play and the standard of the entertainment factor has been just about as good as it gets at our level of the game which is of course the highest standard

Welcome to today’s game and to our visitors from Hendon, we hope you have a safe trip home.

I’m currently reading the book ‘Prisoners of Geography’ by journalist Tim Marshall, looking at how various countries’ history and politics are influenced by the mountains/ seas/rivers etc that affect their relationships with surrounding nations. It’s a good and interesting book.

One of the recurring themes of various pastoral conversations I’ve had over the years is how many people see themselves as ‘prisoners of circumstance’, where they feel trapped by the things that have shaped their lives. I find it moving and humbling to hear about some of these.

INTRODUCING ‘PITCHING IN’ – THE NEW PARTNER OF THE SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

GVC is delighted to announce that the new sponsor of the Northern , Isthmian and Southern Leagues - is Pitching In.

Pitching In, is a new Grassroots Sports Investment Programme that has today been launched by GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group which owns Ladbrokes and Coral.

The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National Leagues System, who market themselves collectively as the Trident Leagues.

England footballing legend Stuart Pearce, who played for Wealdstone FC for five years at the start of his long and illustrious career, has been appointed as the official Pitching In ambassador.

Stuart Pearce, ambassador for the Pitching In programme, says:

“I am delighted to be taking up the role of ambassador for Pitching In, as I’m passionate about the importance of investing in grassroots sports and in developing young talent. I started out playing for Wealdstone FC before joining Coventry City so I understand how important funding is to the non- league game. Grassroots football is facing huge challenges at the moment and many clubs are struggling to stay afloat. GVC’s Pitching In investment will help make a big difference to hundreds of clubs and thousands of players across the country.”

Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and encouraging grassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives.

In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate and encourage members of the community to become volunteers, and do some pitching in of their own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes and Coral shop colleagues with their local clubs.

In the weeks ahead Pitching In and the Trident Leagues will be announcing further initiatives to provide financial support and opportunities for all the 226 clubs (rising to 240 in 2021).

Salisbury continued to threaten and had a Lewis Benson shot blocked by Lee doing some needed work at the back for the Dolphins.

League & Cup Games Up to and including 10 October 2020

STEVE HARVEY RIP Steve sadly lost his battle with cancer last Monday. He was a significant personality on the local non league football scene and was universally popular. He spent a few years as a director here and also filled that role at Wimborne. More recently for a number of years was Chairman at Hamworthy Utd where he oversaw huge improvements to their ground including a significant extension to their Clubhouse, where he was often to be seen pulling pints. That was Steve though, he was a performer, he got his hands dirty in the support of his Club. He was a huge football person in every sense of the phrase. He was the sort of character on which football at our level is based-we haven’t got enough Steve Harveys and it is desperately sad that we have lost this one. Rest in Peace my friend-you have earned your rest,I just wish you had been able to hang around for a fair few years more-you were taken far too soon. Chris Reeves
