Dates Inclusive: 1738 - 2011 Bulk: Books 1840-1890; Genealogy documents 1980 - 2011 Conditions Governing Access No Restrictions Languages English Scope and Content The collection consists of books and articles written by and about Benson Lossing, historian and illustrator. Also in the collection are 9 linear feet of genealogy documents complied by Donna Ewins pertaining to the Lossing and Ewins families. Historical Note Donna Ewins (1946-2014) was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, moved to Onsted, Michigan where she completed her schooling. After graduation from Central Michigan University she was appointed as a high school social studies teacher in the Niagara Falls School District, Niagara Falls, New York. Following her retirement from the Niagara Falls School District in 2001, she concentrated her efforts on genealogical studies. Upon finding and researching her family's roots, she published "Pieter Pieterse Lassen of Dutchess County and His Descendants", a history of the Lossing Family. This research led her to address her newly found cousins in Norwich, Ontario, Canada. Her hobbies were knitting, cross- stitching, reading, photography and studying history and archaeology in the US and Europe. Her travels abroad included Egypt, France, the United Kingdom-extensively in Scotland and England. Upon discovering the relationship to Benson Lossing, Donna Ewins, began her collection of Lossing materials. Benson Lossing (1813-1891) was a prolific and popular American historian and illustrator, best known for illustrated books on the American Revolution and American Civil War and historical features in Harper’s Magazine. Born in Beekman, New York he was orphaned at age 11 in 1824. He moved to Poughkeepsie, New York where he apprenticed with Adam Henderson, watchmaker and silversmith. He began an independent study of history. In 1833 Lossing and Henderson formed a partnership. Lossing married his first wife, Alice Barrit in 1833. In 1835, Lossing became part owner and editor of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph, he also produced a semi-monthly literary paper, the Poughkeepsie Casket. Lossing learned the art of wood engraving from J.A. Adams, illustrator for the paper. Lossing moved to New York City in 1838 working as a journalist and illustrator. He edited and illustrated J.S. Rothchild’s weekly Family Magazine from 1839 to 1841. In 1840 his first book was published, Outline of the History of Fine Arts. In 1846 he joined William Barritt in a wood engraving business, it became one of the largest in New York City. Lossing’s illustrations appeared in several periodicals including Harper’s Magazine. Lossing published over 40 books in his lifetime, his pen and ink drawings were the primary illustrations that were then turned into wood cuts. After the death of his first wife in 1855, he married Helen Sweet in 1856. In 1868 the Lossings moved to Dover, New York and lived in a manor inherited from Helen’s family. Lossing was involved in charitable, civic, literary and historical societies and served as a charter trustee of Vassar College. He died at home in 1891. Provenance The Collection was donated to the Dutchess County Historical Society by the Donna Ewins Estate in 2015. Subject Headings Lossing, Benson John, 1813-1891. Lossing, Benson John, 1813-1891. Library of Congress Figure 1: The British surrender their Armies to General Washington after their defeat at Your Town in Virginia, Octorber 1781. 48 ARLINGTON 1-IISTORICA L MAGAZINE The Arlington House Engravings of the British Surrender at Yorktown: Too Often Overlooked? BY DEAN A. DEROSA In the morning room and in the second-floor hall ofArlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial (the US National Park Service historical site on the grounds ofArlington National Cemetery), hang two framed engravings, entitled "The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington after their Defeat at Yorktown in Virginia, October 1781." The two art pieces, first published in 1819, are drawn by John Francis Renault and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. The morning room engraving is in color, while the second floor engraving is inscribed in black ink (Figure 1). The caption at the base of the two engravings reads, "To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York." Thus, the twin engravings are drawn by a participant in the Siege of Yorktown, if not also a witness to the historic British surrender and subsequent surrender ceremony, which for all intents and purposes ended major hostilities during the American Revolution. The allegorical background of the engravings depicts not only the field upon which the British, Continental, and French armies stood during the sur render ceremony, but also a number of classical images and symbols of human discord, victory, and liberty, described in an 1804 prospectus apparently in reference to an early, circa 1810-1815 version of the Renault drawing (Figure 2) upon which the published engraving would eventually be based, that are largely lost upon us today.

Historical and commemorative medals can often be used to help illustrate the plight of a People. Such is the case with medals issued during the period of the War of 1812. As wars go, this war was fairly short and had relatively few casualties1, but it had enormous impact on the future of the countries and inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. At the conclusion of this conflict, the geography, destiny and social structure of the newly-formed United States of America and Canada were forever and irrevocably altered.

In 1814 it remained largely French-speaking, though it had been politically British for 600 years. The island's only town, St Peter Port (which in 1814 accommodated over half the population) had during the previous century developed a thriving commercial sector with strong links to England, whose cultural influence it began to absorb. The rural hinterland was, by contrast, characterised by a traditional autarkic regime more redolent of pre industrial France. By 1914, the population had doubled, but St Peter Port's share had fallen to 43 percent.

GARDINER Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2015 [ii] UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND THE ENVIRONMENT SCHOOL OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING Doctor of Philosophy PHYSICAL DRIVERS OF SALTMARSH CHANGE IN ENCLOSED ESTUARIES Sarah C. Gardiner Estuaries are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on the planet, per unit area, with intertidal habitats and particularly saltmarshes providing a variety or ecosystem services and supporting large numbers of both primary and secondary producers. These habitats are globally important and are found throughout tropical to temperate climates. Micro-tidal estuaries are found throughout the world and particularly sensitive to sea-level rise, as they are limited in their ability to adjust and are considered vulnerable to future changes .Hence, at a broad scale, understanding the drivers and mechanisms of saltmarsh change in micro-tidal systems is crucial in aiding decision making in future coastal management.

Charles University in Prague Faculty of Social Sciences Institute of International Studies Department of American Studies The Aspirations and Ascent of George Washington in the Context of His Times: From His Early Years to the End of the Revolutionary War Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation Author: Mgr. Stanislav Sýkora Supervisor: Prof. PhDr. Svatava Raková, CSc. Year: 2012 ABSTRACT George Washington’s relatively obscure beginnings did not preclude him from admiring and acquainting himself with chivalrous role models and genteel guidelines. Longing for recognition, Washington sought opportunities to serve his influential patrons to merit their further approbation. The dissertation sets Washington’s aspirations in the context of honor-based sociocultural milieu of his day and thus provides the reader with an insight into the conventional aspects of his ascent to the upper echelons of the colonial society of Virginia. At the time of the Revolution, Washington’s military reputation, leadership, and admirable character earned him a unanimous election to the chief command of the American armies. The complexity of Washington’s venture of accepting, exercising, and ultimately resigning the supreme military powers in relation to his reputation and sense of patriotic duty is thoroughly analyzed. Key words: George Washington, convention, ascent, ambition, patriotism, virtue iii I declare that I have worked on this dissertation independently, using the sources listed in the bibliography. …………………………………… Author’s signature iv CONTENTS Introduction 1 Chapter One: The Early Influences 11 Chapter Two: “Honour and Glory” 42 Chapter Three: The Gentleman of Mount Vernon 113 Chapter Four: “It Surely Is the Duty of Every Man Who Has Abilities to Serve His Country” 123 Chapter Five: “My Plan Is to Secure a Good Deal of Land” 168 Chapter Six: “Certain I Am No Person in Virginia Takes More Pains to Make Their Tobo Fine than I Do” 184 Chapter Seven: “George Washington, Esq.

The length of our only article has crowded out a rich menu of correspondence, announcement of the Club Medal for 2013, the President’s Message and ye Editor’s Notes. We have all of these items PLUS an especially rich and varied backlog to which to look forward. We hope to Tpublish another issue soon after this one and yet another before year end. Turning to the War of 1812, our webmaster Ben Weiss has crafted an outstanding analysis of the subject. He covers all of the many venues of the War – the battles on our Northern frontier, on the East Coast, on the Great Lakes, the epic confrontations at sea and the final chapter featuring Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. These are the stuff of history books and will be familiar to all readers familiar with the past and with the traditions of our nation.
