BY DEAN A. DEROSA In the morning room and in the second-floor hall ofArlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial (the US National Park Service historical site on the grounds ofArlington National Cemetery), hang two framed engravings, entitled "The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington after their Defeat at Yorktown in Virginia, October 1781." The two art pieces, first published in 1819, are drawn by John Francis Renault and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. The morning room engraving is in color, while the second floor engraving is inscribed in black ink (Figure 1). The caption at the base of the two engravings reads, "To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York." Thus, the twin engravings are drawn by a participant in the Siege of Yorktown, if not also a witness to the historic British surrender and subsequent surrender ceremony, which for all intents and purposes ended major hostilities during the American Revolution. The allegorical background of the engravings depicts not only the field upon which the British, Continental, and French armies stood during the sur render ceremony, but also a number of classical images and symbols of human discord, victory, and liberty, described in an 1804 prospectus apparently in reference to an early, circa 1810-1815 version of the Renault drawing (Figure 2) upon which the published engraving would eventually be based, that are largely lost upon us today. -

Historical and commemorative medals can often be used to help illustrate the plight of a People. Such is the case with medals issued during the period of the War of 1812. As wars go, this war was fairly short and had relatively few casualties1, but it had enormous impact on the future of the countries and inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. At the conclusion of this conflict, the geography, destiny and social structure of the newly-formed United States of America and Canada were forever and irrevocably altered. -

Historical Note Donna Ewins (1946-2014) was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, moved to Onsted, Michigan where she completed her schooling. After graduation from Central Michigan University she was appointed as a high school social studies teacher in the Niagara Falls School District, Niagara Falls, New York. Following her retirement from the Niagara Falls School District in 2001, she concentrated her efforts on genealogical studies. Upon finding and researching her family's roots, she published "Pieter Pieterse Lassen of Dutchess County and His Descendants", a history of the Lossing Family. This research led her to address her newly found cousins in Norwich, Ontario, Canada. Her hobbies were knitting, cross- stitching, reading, photography and studying history and archaeology in the US and Europe. Her travels abroad included Egypt, France, the United Kingdom-extensively in Scotland and England. -

Year: 2012 ABSTRACT George Washington’s relatively obscure beginnings did not preclude him from admiring and acquainting himself with chivalrous role models and genteel guidelines. Longing for recognition, Washington sought opportunities to serve his influential patrons to merit their further approbation. The dissertation sets Washington’s aspirations in the context of honor-based sociocultural milieu of his day and thus provides the reader with an insight into the conventional aspects of his ascent to the upper echelons of the colonial society of Virginia. At the time of the Revolution, Washington’s military reputation, leadership, and admirable character earned him a unanimous election to the chief command of the American armies. The complexity of Washington’s venture of accepting, exercising, and ultimately resigning the supreme military powers in relation to his reputation and sense of patriotic duty is thoroughly analyzed. The early leaders and citizens of our nation were marked by human flaws like the rest of us. But most of these men and women had one thing in common. They acknowledged, honored, relied and called upon the Almighty God of the Bible. It is the fingerprint of God upon our heritage that shows why we became a great and free nation. Dr. A. Loyd Collins wrote this little book in the late 1960s, shortly before I met him. He wanted this book to meet a long-felt need of showing the close relationship between God and the found- ing/development of our country. Dr. Collins was Executive Vice-President of Baptist Christian College in Shreveport, Louisiana when I was a student there. -

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
