Herzberger, Chairperson Dr. James A. Parr Dr. Raymond L. Williams Copyright by Rachel Anna Neff 2013 The Dissertation of Rachel Anna Neff is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgements First and foremost, I wish to thank my kind and patient dissertation director, Dr. David K. Herzberger. I stopped counting the number of drafts he read and commented on, because I’m fairly certain the actual number would constitute cruel and unusual punishment. I am so grateful for the time and care he invested in my candidacy; I hope to one day be even half the mentor he has been to me. I would like to thank Dr. James A. Parr for serving on my committee, guiding me through several independent studies to improve my written Spanish, and for leading the amazing study abroad program in Spain where I worked at the Biblioteca Nacional. On a more personal note, I always appreciated how he shared his apple slices with me whenever I stopped by his office. I also wish to thank Dr. Raymond L. Williams for serving on my committee, advising me on independent study projects, and introducing me to Twitter. The topics in his courses were always fascinating, and the discussions inspiring. The end of the seminar dinners at his house are something I wish to do for my mentees in the future.

  • The Domestic Is Not Free, Nov 2—10, Spotlighting the Ways Women Have Created, Challenged, and Subverted Domesticity
BAM presents Women at Work: The Domestic Is Not Free, Nov 2—10, spotlighting the ways women have created, challenged, and subverted domesticity October 9, 2018/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, November 2 through Saturday, November 10 BAM presents Women at Work: The Domestic Is Not Free, a wide-ranging series spotlighting the overlooked work women take on in the home as house-workers, caretakers, and familial partners. The Domestic Is Not Free is the third edition of the ongoing Women at Work series—following Women at Work: Labor Activism in March and Women at Work: Radical Creativity in August—and highlights the historically erased and undervalued physical and emotional labor women perform, often invisibly, every day. The series considers the myriad ways in which women around the world have challenged and subverted traditional associations between gender and domesticity. Exploring the intersections of labor, race, class, and social environment, these films embody human stories of sacrifice and endurance. BAM Cinema Department Coordinator and programmer of the series Natalie Erazo explains, “I learned early on to value the domestic space and appreciate the women around me who shaped it. I hope this series will encourage viewers to acknowledge the monotony and emotional bearing of a life often relegated to being behind the scenes.” The series opens with Ousmane Sembène’s seminal Black Girl (1966—Nov 2). Screening with short films Fannie’s Film (Woods, 1979) and Fucked Like a Star (Saintonge, 2018), these films depict black women in roles of domestic service while also giving audiences access to their inner thoughts, feelings, and struggles.

‘Memory,’ ‘Serpent,’ ‘Truman,’ ‘Magallanes’ Vie For Platino Glory Emilio Mayorga COURTESY: LLEIDA LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 14, 2016 | 11:44AM PT Latin Platino Awards reveals shorter longlist in Santo Domingo SANTO DOMINGO– Matías Bize’s “The Memory of Water,” Salvador del Solar’s “Magallanes,” Ciro Guerra’s “Embrace of the Serpent” and Cesc Gay’s “Truman” figure among 20 Platino Award best pic nomination candidates announced Thursday at a press-conference in Santo Domingo. Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan,” Pablo Larrain’s “The Club,” Federico Veiroj’s “The Apostate” and Paula Ortiz’s “The Bride” also made the best pic cut for the third Platino kudofest, awards aimed at highlighting talent and movies from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Starring Elena Anaya and Benjamín Vicuña as a couple battling to overcome the loss of their small son, “Memory” competed at 2015’s Venice Days and took the Silver Colon at Spain’s Huelva Fest. Sold by Germany’s Global Screen, it most recently received plaudits from critics and audiences at this week’s Latin American Fest in Lleida, Spain. Handled by Filmax Intl., melancholy friendship dramedy “Truman” has swept awards at multiple events this season. Produced by Spain’s Impossible Films, the seventh feature of Cesc Gay is co-produced out of Argentina by K & S and Telefonica Studios/Telefe, two shingles behind Damian Szifron’s “Wild Tales” — which swept the 2nd Platino Awards — and “The Clan” — also in the running this year. Produced by Peru’s Pendulo Films and Tondero Films, Argentina’s Cepa Audiovisual and Colombia’s Cinerama and Proyectil, “Magallanes,” which is the directorial debut of Peruvian thesp Salvador del Solar (“Pantaleon y las Visitadores”), is one of the highest- profile titles from a national cinema, Peru, which, like Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela and this year Chile, has seen local movies fire up appreciable market share at their domestic box office.

Rita Fiorella Montero Diaz Fusion as inclusion: A Lima upper class delusion? Music Department Royal Holloway University of London This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 Declaration of Authorship I Rita Fiorella Montero Diaz hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis examines Peruvian popular intercultural music fusions and their impact among the white upper classes of Lima, Peru. Often antagonised, essentialised and understudied, Lima’s white upper classes have historically distanced themselves from the city’s migrant Andean/Amazonian population, whilst maintaining a relationship of hegemony. However, in the aftermath of the trauma and mass displacements of the twenty-year internal war (1980-2000) between the State and terrorist groups, certain sectors among the young upper classes have come to question their own social dominance. This study charts how certain aspects of this re-negotiation of identity and social position, and a desire for integration with wider Peruvian society, has been articulated through the medium of fusions musics. In particular, since 2005 fusion music has crystallised into a distinct genre and received a notable boom in popularity. These recent developments in fusion music are placed within a broad historical frame and the context of Peru’s fraught racial and class relations, to examine how discourses of integration are juxtaposed with those

The film is a fictional drama inspired by medical anthropologist Kimberly Theidon’s Entre Prójimos (2004). Theidon focuses on over a decade of research in Quechua-speaking communities in rural Ayacucho and how these inhabitants were impacted by Peru’s bloody civil war. Theidon’s research on wartime rape and its trauma is a foundation for Llosa’s film about postconflict Lima and the displaced peasants that live in the surrounding shantytowns. I consider Llosa’s film in relation to Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection in order to discuss how abjection and the abject in the cinematic narrative can provide accessible mediums for the discussion and portrayal of violent trauma.
