Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced.

  • Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Annual Report Fiscal Year 2006
Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Annual Report Fiscal Year 2006 The Pilot • Special Section • April 27, 2007 Prayer to Saint Matthew the Apostle, patron saint of financial managers Dear publican become a Saint, after once gathering taxes and tolls how wonderful was your conversion by grace when discarding your earthly possessions you followed the Poor Man of Nazareth. The Mammon of Money is still worshiped. Inspire bankers with kindness and with the desire to help where they can; for what is done to the least, to the poor, is done to Jesus, the Son of Man. Amen. Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2006 In our Financial Transparency Review for Fiscal Year 2005 presented last year, several goals and commitments were detailed, including: • Provide an understanding of the financial condition and operations of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, a Corporation Sole; • Move toward full financial disclosure of all individual, active parishes; • Establish a framework for the future strategic planning of the Archdiocese; and • Bring the Central Operations of the Archdiocese to a balanced budget within 18 months (or for the fiscal year 2008 budget). The Annual Report for fiscal year 2006, presented in the following pages, has been developed to provide our parishioners and supporters with not only an understanding of our financial position, but to also offer the perspective of those individuals charged with the Archdiocese’s stewardship and financial management. It is a bridge to the future as we move to provide an annual report that will follow the progress of our Parishes, Ministries and Programs.

Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston My Dear Friends in Christ, In his letters to the early Christian community, St. Paul encourages the faithful to persevere through the challenges they face, confident in the knowledge that they are doing the work of the Lord. Those timeless words carry an important message for the Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Boston today. This annual report recognizes the reality of the Archdiocese’s financial condition. The economic shortfalls in many of the communities served by our parishes have led an increasing number of people to turn to the Church for help, many never having expected to be in such a circumstance. We remain committed to carry on the mission given us by Jesus Christ, providing food, shelter, healthcare and compassionate concern to those in need At many times during the past year, the local Catholic community has shown great generosity for others.

The depth and breadth of our history and the vitality of our local church in this present time were brought forth as we made the commitment to continue building on the foundations established by our predecessors. This annual report shows us that the Archdiocese’s overall financial condition has improved over the last year, continuing the positive trend of recent years. The report also indicates that we face a number of challenges, including an unprecedented number of requests for services for the poor and those who find themselves in a never expected circumstance of need. The economic declines and job losses of the past year have impacted many people.

  • Chapter Four the Jesuit Heritage in Eastern Massachusetts
CHAPTER FOUR THE JESUIT HERITAGE IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS Eastern Massachusetts embraces a population of more than five and a half million people in the counties of Essex, Middle sex, Norfolk, Plymouth (except for the towns of Mattapoisett, Marion and Wareham) and Suffolk. Slightly more than two million of these people are Catholics of the see of Boston which goes back to 8 April 1808 and which became an archdiocese on 12 February 1875. This chapter will explore the relationship of the Society of Jesus to the development of Catholicism in this section of the Bay State in the early period of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the Jesuits were outlawed, in the modern period of the nineteenth century when the Jesuits were accepted, and in the contemporary period of the twentieth century when the Jesuits have proven to be a vital element in the religious and cultural life of eastern Massachusetts. I In the study of the early relationship of the Jesuits to eastern Massachusetts, Plymouth, founded in 1620, Salem, founded in 1626, and Boston, founded in 1630, are important. While each of these settlements had its own governor, all of them were one in their attitude towards the Jesuits. This is illustrated by John Winthrop, founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who declared that a major reason for sailing to New England was "to rayse a bulwarke against the kingdom of Antichrist which the Jesuits labour to reare vp in all places of the worlde." And, since the charter of Massachusetts incorpor ated oaths of supremacy and allegiance with their anti-Jesuit overtones, it is clear that the founding of the Bay State was at least partially prejudiced against the Jesuits.
