SAINT THERESA OF AVILA WEST ROXBURY , MASSACHUSETTS AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM A NOTE FROM MONSIGNOR HELMICK This coming Tuesday, July 31, is the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the one-time Spanish soldier who renounced his quest for fame and glory and, having experienced the grace of conversion, ended up as a priest and the founder of the Jesuit Order- - - the Society of Jesus. All of this took place in the 16 th century, at a time of enormous challenges to the Catholic Church. It was, among other things, the time of the so-called Reformation, when the doctrine of the Faith was under severe attack in many traditionally Catholic countries. The Jesuits were especially dedicated to the service of the Pope, and they were very successful in their defense of the Catholic Faith and the Catholic Church. They were also very much involved in the missionary activity of the Catholic Church. Among the most renowned Jesuit Mis- sionary priests was Saint Francis Xavier, one of the original group gathered around Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Francis Xavier went to the Orient, before there were such things as jet planes, bringing the Faith of the Church to India and to Japan. Another famous Jesuit missionary priest was Father Matteo Ricci, who brought the Catholic Faith and the Catholic Church to China. The missionary activity of the Society of Jesus has continued over the centuries since the time of Ignatius Loyola, and goes on to this moment, all over the world. The Jesuits have also been and continue to be very much engaged in education, in Jesuit Universities, Colleges, and High Schools all over the world. My own brother, Father Raymond Helmick, S.J. spent several years in the Jesuit Mission in Jamaica, West Indies, and taught at Boston College from 1984 until the last semester of the 2012/ 2013 academic year. By that time, he was teaching from a wheelchair. A Priest from Saint Theresa’s Parish, Father Francis Sullivan, S.J., taught theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Among his students, over the 35 years he taught at the “Greg”, are priests who are now Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops, including, several American Cardinals. Another Priest from Saint Theresa’s Parish was Father John Brooks, S.J., for many years the renowned President of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. When you think of it, there would be nothing like the Catholic Church as we know it in the Archdiocese of Boston without the Jesuits, especially the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, which was founded by the second Bishop of Boston, Benedict Fenwick, S.J., and Boston College. Although Boston College and the College of the Holy Cross were never officially designated as seminaries, in fact, they turned out to be college seminaries for the Archdiocese of Boston, especially Boston College. Until 1940, there was no college seminary in the Archdiocese of Boston, but countless priests attended Boston College and Holy Cross. Among the prominent alumni of Boston College, for instance, are Cardinal O’Connell and Cardinal Cushing, two Archbishops of Boston: Cardinal Wright, a Boston Priest who was the first Bishop of Worcester, then the Bishop of Pittsburgh, and, finally, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy in the Vatican. The present Archbishop for the United States Military Services, Archbishop Timothy Broglio, is an alumnus of Boston College- - - and looks after the spiritual well being of our servicemen and women, many of whom are from Saint Theresa’s Parish and are now serving in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and several other dangerous places. A whole generation of Boston Archdiocesan Priests are alumni of Boston College. Our own Father Andreas Davison obtained his Licentiate Degree in Theology from Boston College last year. Father Peter Nolan, several years ago, received his degree in Psychology from Boston College. All of this began with the conversion of one man, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, whose dedication to Christ, to the Priesthood, to the Church, to the Pope, and to the proclamation and defense of the Catholic Faith has led to what I have described above, and, I am sure, much, much more! The motto of the Society of Jesus is “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” - - - “To the Greater Glory of God.” We can only imagine the wonderment in the mind and heart of Saint Ignatius of Loyola today, as he looks down from his place in heaven, and sees, on the Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle, the first Jesuit Pope in the history of the Catholic Church, Jorge Bergoglio, S.J., now Pope Francis, doing all he can do, generously and patiently, for the Greater Glory of God, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. I have no doubt that, from his place in heaven, Saint Ignatius of Loyola joins the Catholic Church all over the world, praying a familiar prayer for the Pope: “Viva Il Papa!” Reverend Monsignor William M.
