HELENE S SCHJERFBECK, Art book published for the 150th anniversary of her birth (July 10, 1862 – January 23, 1946.) Donated by The Embassy of Finland ($500/$75/$25) Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck is one of Scandinavia’s most important and recognized artists. This book, the first monograph about the fascinating art of Schjerfbeck, details a comprehensive retrospective shown in Hamburg, The Hague, and Paris, for which more than120 of her works were brought together from over 40 international private and public collections. Schjerfbeck is most widely known for her realist works and self-portraits, less well known for her landscapes and still lifes. Her work changed dramatically throughout her long life. Her work starts with a dazzlingly skilled, somewhat melancholic version of late-19th-century academic realism…it ends with distilled, nearly abstract images in which pure paint and cryptic description are held in perfect balance. (Roberta Smith, New York Times, November 27th 1992) 19. Wagner Lovers Collection Donated by Betty Byrne ($80/$50/$10) Quo Vadis, Wagner? Pohanka, Trustee and past Chairman of Washington National Opera and a founding member of the Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. This book presents an innovative and articulate survey of Richard Wagner's aesthetic and philosophical development, within the historical context of mysticism. Comprehensively documented both from the composer's own writing and a host of philosophers, poets, and musicians, the author sheds new light on the question of why Wagner's music affects us like no other. “Re-discovering Richard Wagner through his music” (4 CDs) Long awaited recording of Saul Liliestein’s All Day Seminar at the Goethe Institut on March 19, 2011. This magnificent set of Swul Lilienstein’s spirited discussion will entertain and sducare. You will never listen to Wagner’s music the same way again and you will get a new perspective of Lohengrin’s Wedding March that will enrich your pleasure forever. Did You Know… Like many of his contemporaries, Sibelius was initially enamored of the music of Wagner. A performance of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival had a strong effect on him, inspiring him to write to his wife shortly thereafter, "Nothing in the world has made such an impression on me, it moves the very strings of my heart." He studied the scores of Wagner's operas Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, and Die Walküre intently. With this music in mind, Sibelius began work on an opera of his own, entitled Veneen luominen (The Building of the Boat). ! ! 20.
