P. Josephinae, A. Micella, H. Rhomboidella
2010, Entomologist’s Gazette 61: 207–221 Notes on the early stages of four species of Oecophoridae, Gelechiidae and Pyralidae (Lepidoptera) in the British Isles R. J. HECKFORD 67 Newnham Road, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon PL7 4AW,U.K. Synopsis Descriptions are given of the early stages of Pseudatemelia josephinae (Toll, 1956), Argolamprotes micella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), Hypatima rhomboidella (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pyrausta cingulata (Linnaeus, 1758). Key words: Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae, Gelechiidae, Pyralidae, Pseudatemelia josephinae, Argolamprotes micella, Hypatima rhomboidella, Pyrausta cingulata, ovum, larva. Pseudatemelia josephinae (Toll, 1956) (Oecophoridae) It appears that the only descriptions of the ovum, larva and life-cycle in the British literature are those given by Langmaid (2002a: 103–104) and these are stated to be based on those by Heylaerts (1884: 150). Heylaerts’ paper begins by referring to an account of the larva given by Fologne (1860: 102–103), under the name Oecophora flavifrontella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), now Pseudatemelia flavifrontella. Heylaerts also uses the name Oecophora flavifrontella but Langmaid follows Jäckh (1959: 174–184) in attributing Heylaerts’ description to Pseudatemelia josephinae, then an undescribed species. Although neither Fologne nor Heylaerts gives any indication of localities, because they published their accounts in a Belgian periodical I presume that both found the species in that country. After P. josephinae was described in 1956 it was found to occur in Belgium. Fologne (1860: 102–103) states that he found cases in May on the trunks of ‘hêtres’, beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.), onto which he assumed they had climbed towards evening to eat and that during the day they remain concealed amongst dry leaves. -

Forensic entomology can help to estimate the time elapsed since death by studying the necrophagous insects collected on a cadaver and its surroundings. In this paper forty eight species (369 specimens) are listed that belong to seven families: Silphidae (3 species), Staphylinidae (6 species), Histeridae (11 species), Anobiidae (4 species), Cleridae (6 species), Dermestidae (14 species), and Nitidulidae (4 species). -
Harmful Non-Indigenous Species in the United States
Harmful Non-Indigenous Species in the United States September 1993 OTA-F-565 NTIS order #PB94-107679 GPO stock #052-003-01347-9 Recommended Citation: U.S. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, Harmful Non-Indigenous Species in the United States, OTA-F-565 (Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, September 1993). For Sale by the U.S. Government Printing Office ii Superintendent of Documents, Mail Stop, SSOP. Washington, DC 20402-9328 ISBN O-1 6-042075-X Foreword on-indigenous species (NIS)-----those species found beyond their natural ranges—are part and parcel of the U.S. landscape. Many are highly beneficial. Almost all U.S. crops and domesticated animals, many sport fish and aquiculture species, numerous horticultural plants, and most biologicalN control organisms have origins outside the country. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests. -

The au thors speculated that the individuals originated from Czech territory. To understand the con text of their records, it is necessary to take into account the recent distribution of this species in the Czech Republic. Approximately since the 1950s, this butterfly species had been declining and gradually disap peared from both Bohemia and Moravia (Novak & Liska, 1997; Lastuvka, 1998; Beun, 1999), although there were occasional invasions followed by establishments of transient populations, such as near Pribram in the 1970s (Zeleny, 1977). -

Niitä tutkimalla on saatu kuva maamme kvartäärikautisesta kehityksestä. Mannerjäätikön toiminnan tuloksena, -

For some time before that this moor, which is naturally very attractive to many species of wild birds, had not been sufficiently watched or protected, and in the absence of this had become a happy hunting- ground for egg-gatherers, who regularly searched it for eggs, and gathered every egg they could find. -

A few species flies) are extremely different; the former have aquatic larvae, actually have terrestrial larvae, but even these are relegated to and the latter nearly always have terrestrial, plant-feeding wet leaf litter, so many defining features of the order concern caterpillars. Nonetheless, the close relationship of these two larval adaptations for an almost wholly aquatic lifestyle (Wig- orders hasLepidoptera essentially never been disputed and is supported gins, 1977, 1996). For example, larvae are apneustic (without by strong morphological (Kristensen, 1975, 1991), molecular spiracles) and respire through a thin, permeable cuticle, (Wheeler et al., 2001; Whiting, 2002), and paleontological evi- some of which have filamentous abdominal gills that are sim- dence.
