Males Females

Age by Sex As illustrated in the graph above the difference between the sexes varied greatly within age groups in South Uist. This was particularly so in the 65 to 69 age group where there were 23 more males than females. The variation in sexes was similar to the pattern for the Outer Hebrides as a whole, where there were more males in the younger age groups and more females in the older age groups. Up to the age of 69 there were more males than females in most age groups. From the age of 70 onwards there were more females than males, reflecting the higher life expectancy of women in the Outer Hebrides.

Overall, 51% of the population in South Uist was male, while 49% was female. As illustrated below, there was a higher percentage of males in the under 16 age group, 16 to 30 age group and 31 to 64 age group while in the 65 and over age group there was a higher percentage of females.

Household Tenure Out of the 854 households in South Uist, 597 (70%) were owned. Of those owned, 393 (46%) were owned outright, while 202 (23.7%) were owned with a mortgage or loan. In the rented sector, 171 (20%) were social rented, while 65 (8%) were private rented. 21 households (2%) were living rent free. South Uist had the highest percentage of social rented houses in all island areas. The average household size in South Uist was 2.22 in comparison to 2.17 in the Outer Hebrides.

Household Type In South Uist one person households were the largest household type at 35.6% as illustrated in the adjacent chart. This was only slightly less than that of the Outer Hebrides as a whole which is 37.2%. All household types in South Uist were broadly similar to those in the Outer Hebrides as a whole.

Travel to work/study Method Travel to work/study methods in South Uist were similar to those in the Outer Hebrides as illustrated in the chart below. However, a higher percentage work or study from home and South Uist had the highest percentage of people in island areas travelling to work by bus or minibus/coach.

National Identity The majority of those living in South Uist (73%) identified themselves as having a Scottish identity only, higher than the Outer Hebrides average. South Uist also had the highest percentage in island areas identifying themselves as Scottish and other identities. All other identities are broadly similar with the Outer Hebrides.

Ethnic Identity South Uist had a slightly higher percentage of those identifying themselves as White Scottish than in the Outer Hebrides as a whole. In island areas South Uist had the lowest percentage of those identifying as White: Irish and White: Other. All ethnic groups were broadly similar to the Outer Hebrides.

Religion

The majority of people in South Uist (65%) stated that their religion was Roman Catholicism, much higher than the Outer Hebrides average of 12.3%. In island areas South Uist had the lowest percentage of people stating their religious denomination was Church of Scotland. Those stating their religious denomination was Other Christian was also much lower than the Outer Hebrides average of 19.1%.

Country of Birth

Out of the 1,897 people living in South Uist, 1,864 were born in the UK. The majority of people in South Uist were born in Scotland, while the next largest group was those born in England at almost 12% (227). 15 people were born in Africa, Middle East and Asia, The Americas and the Caribbean and Antartica and Oceania and other countries. 12 people were born in other EU countries. For all the groups there was very little difference between those in South Uist and that of the Outer Hebrides as a whole.

There was very little difference between industries in South Uist and the Outer Hebrides with the greatest difference in the Manufacturing industry which was 3.2 percentage points lower in South Uist.
