Dead Child - the Phoenix Dead Child - The Phoenix http://thephoenix.com/printerfriendlyB.aspx?id=60556 Dead Child Attack | Quarterstick/Touch and Go By: MATT ASHARE 4/29/2008 2:55:18 PM From the first monster-metal riff and warlock scream, it’s pleasantly obvious where Dead Child are headed on their full-length debut. This is what used to be called the “new wave” of British metal back when Judas Priest and Iron Maiden first took what Black Sabbath had started to its logical conclusion. The only real surprise here is the presence of David Pajo, guitarist of legendary and formative Louisville foursome Slint, and a guy who in recent years has tended more toward cerebral post-rock both with Tortoise and on his own (as Papa M, Aerial M, and just plain Pajo). Hard to say how much irony is at work here: nobody names a song “Never Bet the Devil Your Head” without at least a smirk. But this sort of metal has always had an element of humor to it, even when, as in this case, singer Dahm is channeling Ozzy with lines like “Life is a hideous thing” in the epic “Eye to the Brain,” or playing the role of the merciless warlord in “Rattlesnake Chalice.” With a CV that includes Stereolab, Royal Trux, and Will Oldham’s various Palace incarnations, not to mention backing Billy Corgan in the short-lived Zwan, it sometimes seems that Pajo has done it all. Dead Child remind us that he hasn’t quite gotten there yet. Copyright © 2007 The Phoenix Media/Communications Group 1 of 1 5/2/2008 1:39 PM.

  • Speaking in Rhyme and Riddle: Hybridity in Billy Corgan's
SPEAKING IN RHYME AND RIDDLE: HYBRIDITY IN BILLY CORGAN’S MACHINA by ADAM MICHAEL WARE (Under the Direction of Carolyn Jones Medine) ABSTRACT The present study examines MACHINA , a hybrid multimedia narrative composed and performed by Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins. Through a disjunctive use of media to tell the story of a fractured, hybrid hero named GLASS, Corgan reveals himself to be an inheritor of William Blake’s attitudes toward creative media as evidenced in his experiments in illuminated engraving. GLASS, the focus of the chards of narrative and performance, represents one variant of Joseph Campbell’s hero as suited to the needs of Corgan’s disaffected audience. In the act of co-creating the narrative with Corgan, his audience helps to enter themselves into a liminal state and a sense of communitas as developed by anthropologist Victor Turner, again with variations made to suit the fractured, conflicted nature of Billy Corgan’s audience. More than a concept album, MACHINA reworks a number of existing notions about religious responses to narrative and performance. • Dead Child - "Sweet Chariot"
Dead Child - "Sweet Chariot" http://www.exclaim.ca/articles/generalarticlesynopsfullart.aspx?csid1=1... Dead Child "Sweet Chariot" 3/10/2008 By Cam Lindsay In a 2005 interview with Billboard, David Pajo (Slint, Papa M, Tortoise, Zwan, etc.) gave details on his “jokingly” named metal band Dead Child, saying "My concept for this band was that we'd all play baritone guitars that would be tuned really low. I didn't want it to be indie-rock metal — I wanted it to be 'death to false metal' metal!’" It’s a quote that seems to have stuck with the band, like a creed, in their bid to indulge in old school power metal, filled with all the trimmings: Dio-esque operatics palm-muted riffage, solos that soar higher than eagles, and morbid fantasies stirring the lyrics. Debut album Attack is set for an April 8 release, and it hits all the nails on the head, as Pajo and Michael McMahan (The For Carnation, Slint reunion) become hypnotised in their thrashing, weaving scale-crawling guitar licks together while vocalist Dahm (Phantom Family Halo, Brothers of Conquest) screams like they used to back when just about every NWOBHM act was shifting millions. “Sweet Chariot” is the album’s lead track/single, and it comes out of the gates at a break-neck pace, spewing fire with a chorus of “Swing low!” that completes the titular nod to the gospel standard. Considering this is true metal, the homage tastes a bit like sacrilege, but I’m sure their Lord Satan will appreciate the effort.

  • Like a Precious Family Secret
:: View email as a web page :: Released in 2005, Superwolf by Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Matt Sweeney for years didn’t seem to exist outside of a few small enclaves reserved for hard-core enthusiasts. A profoundly beautiful folk-rock record populated by unreliable narrators, Superwolf at the time was supported by only a small handful of shows and a minimal press campaign. After that, it fell into a digital black hole for more than a decade, having been deliberately held back from streaming platforms until 2018. And yet people kept on discovering Superwolf. It helped that the album had some famous fans. (Rick Rubin loved it so much that he started using Sweeney — an indie-rock veteran who played in Chavez in the 1990s and Zwan in the early aughts — as one of his regular studio musicians.) But it’s the uniquely indelible songs Sweeney wrote with Will Oldham (who has used the Bonnie “Prince” Billy name for much of his work since 1998) that has kept Superwolf alive over the years. If you knew the record, you likely heard about it from a friend, who shared it like a precious family secret. Now Oldham and Sweeney are back with a new album. Read about how it came together here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... The new Indiecast visualizer names modern indie artists whose songs will one day be staples in grocery stores worldwide. Pop Music Ahoy! TIGTII vA. II : None More Black Packet by Kevin Clair and Jack Rousseau of Carleton University Theme: Pop Music Tossups 1. Hailing from Forest Hills, Queens, they recorded their fIrst album for $6,000 in 1976. Like many u.s. bands of their ilk, they were much bigger in Britain, influencing the two bands with whom they would come to be identifIed as the forefathers of a new brand of rock music. The fIrst track on their self-titled album, "Blitzkrieg Bop," is inexplicably on the Chicago Bulls Greatest Hits album, and other hits from this ·group include "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "I Wanna Be Sedated." FTP, identify this group who lost two founding members, Joey and Dee Dee, in recent years. A: The Ramones 2. Two of the founding members went on to form the Krautrock band Neu!, and one popular story tells that the band's frequent long breaks from releasing an album are due to another founding member's love affair with cycling. The co"er of their 1978 album The Man Machine recalls Soviet propaganda posters, and the album itself contains the unlikely dance-craze single "The Robots." Prior to their fascination with technological themes, the group concentrated on traveling, with two consecutive albums devoted to cars and trains, respectively. FTP, name this Gertnan group responsible, in part, for almost all pop music today, whose most well-known albums are Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express. A: Kraftwerk ( 3. Their front man featured prominently on CNN after the Rodney King beatings, and their "minister of propaganda" was kicked out of the group after stating that Jews caused "the majority of the wickedness that goes on across the globe." That remark overshadowed, for a time, the fact that this group dominated hip-hop during the late 1980s, injecting a political message into a genre that had largely been dominated by party music and gangster posturing.
