Dead Child "Sweet Chariot" 3/10/2008 By Cam Lindsay In a 2005 interview with Billboard, David Pajo (Slint, Papa M, Tortoise, Zwan, etc.) gave details on his “jokingly” named metal band Dead Child, saying "My concept for this band was that we'd all play baritone guitars that would be tuned really low. I didn't want it to be indie-rock metal — I wanted it to be 'death to false metal' metal!’" It’s a quote that seems to have stuck with the band, like a creed, in their bid to indulge in old school power metal, filled with all the trimmings: Dio-esque operatics palm-muted riffage, solos that soar higher than eagles, and morbid fantasies stirring the lyrics. Debut album Attack is set for an April 8 release, and it hits all the nails on the head, as Pajo and Michael McMahan (The For Carnation, Slint reunion) become hypnotised in their thrashing, weaving scale-crawling guitar licks together while vocalist Dahm (Phantom Family Halo, Brothers of Conquest) screams like they used to back when just about every NWOBHM act was shifting millions. “Sweet Chariot” is the album’s lead track/single, and it comes out of the gates at a break-neck pace, spewing fire with a chorus of “Swing low!” that completes the titular nod to the gospel standard. Considering this is true metal, the homage tastes a bit like sacrilege, but I’m sure their Lord Satan will appreciate the effort. Dead Child “Sweet Chariot” 1 of 1 3/10/2008 11:05 AM.

My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket are perhaps the biggest band from Louisville, Kentucky, in the past decade—and the only band we know of that can unite jam band fanatics, indie rock purists, and classic rock enthusiasts alike. While all of the band’s albums are stellar, we recommend checking out their breakthrough 2003 album It Still Moves, which features “One Big Holiday,” a song that can be considered the “Free Bird” for the iTunes generation. That’s not to say that the bands sound the same—VHS Or Beta’s dance-influenced rock jams are more at home in a trance club setting than the Burning Man festival—but both acts have successfully elbowed aside any genre restrictions and helped to unite seemingly disparate scenes with their music.

Auch für die exklusive und ziemlich großartige und gefeierte Show, die The Breeders im Oktober in Berlin gespielt haben, gab es selbstverständlich keine Tickets mehr. Eigentlich war die Band einst als Seitenprojekt von vier sehr energischen Frauen gedacht: Kim Deal von den Pixies, Tanya Donelly von den Throwing Muses, Josephine Wiggs von The Perfect Disaster und Britt Walford von Slint veröffentlichten ihr Debütalbum „Pod“, produziert von Steve Albini, und spielten ein paar Gigs. Ende der Geschichte, könnte man denken. Doch der Sound blieb den Damen im Kopf, und der Einfluss der Frauen stieg immer weiter. 1992 brachte Kim ihrer Schwester Kelley das Gitarrespielen bei, holte Jim Macpherson als Schlagzeuger dazu und nahm zusammen mit Josephine „Last Splash“ auf. Man supportete Nirvana, spielte in Glastonbury und hatte mit „Cannonball“ sogar einen Hit. Ende der Geschichte? Weit gefehlt. The Breeders blieben in den Köpfen und Herzen. The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

The record's greatest Slints Spiderland might be the boundless inspiration it perpetually provides for all the bands that have yet to emerge from the basement. And just what did Slint think their audience—who, judging from the faint smattering of applause, barely cracked the double digits— needed to hear at that moment? In many respects, the story Slints Spiderland Slint is an exceedingly familiar one of influence accruing in absentia, of mavericks who were ignored in their time and had to wait years to get their due. Through their initial existence, Slint were obscure Slints Spiderland even within the subterranean confines of the American indie-rock underground. Compared to the get-in-the-van, play-anywhere ethic practised by fellow s-hardcore students, Slint rarely performed live, and when they did, it was rarely as a headliner. Slints Spiderland were scarce; band photos all the more so. And with the similarly atmospheric, equally explosive likes of Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor dominating the lates indie-rock conversation, Slint ceased to be just some band that had broken up too soon and became an entire subgenre of Slints Spiderland unto itself. I mean, just look at the cover of the Slints Spiderland set—notice something missing? The demos practically break down Spiderland on a riff-by-riff basis, as we hear the songs devolve from pre-production dress rehearsals to rudimentary acoustic sketches recorded on cassette.
