The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. Mogwai – As The Love Continues (1:01:24, Digital, CD, Vinyl, Rock Action Records/[PIAS]/Rough Trade, 2021) Neun vollwertige Studioalben und diverse Live-Aufnahmen, Soundtracks und EPs haben uns Mogwai bisher in ihren 26 Jahren Bandgeschichte beschert und dabei den Sound des Post Rock- Genres so sehr geprägt wie kaum eine andere Band. „As The Love Continues“ ist nun das zehnte reguläre Album der Schotten und erscheint exakt ein Vierteljahrhundert nach deren Debütsingle ‚Turner’/’Lower‘ und nur wenige Monate nach dem Soundtrack für die Serie „ZeroZeroZero“. Und schon nach wenigen Takten ist „As The Love Continues“ eindeutig als Mogwai-Album identifizierbar. Sprich, auf dem neuen Album der Formation aus Glasgow ist (fast) alles beim Alten geblieben. Langweilig wird es dadurch allerdings nicht, denn auf „As The Love Continues“ spielen Stuart Braithwaite (Gitarre), Dominic Aitchison (E-Bass, Gitarre), Martin Bulloch (Schlagzeug) und Barry Burns (Keyboard, Flöte, Gitarre, Bass) noch immer Post Rock auf aller höchstem Niveau. „As The Love Continues“ beginnt in Form von ‚To The Bin My Friend, Tonight We Vacate Earth‘ mit sehr dezenten Tönen, sanftem Schlagzeugspiel und sparsamen Melodien. Ganz in Bandtradition legen die Schotten im Laufe dieses Stücks Soundschicht um Soundschicht übereinander, bevor der Einsatz verzerrter Gitarren und die so Mogwai-typische Laut-Leise- Dynamik das Stück in einer voluminösen, aber dennoch organischen Wall of Sound zu Ende gehen lassen. Das anschließende ‚Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever‘ wird durch piepende Synthesizer-Sounds eingeleitet, welche stilistisch an die schottischen Landsleute vonBoards of Canada denken lassen. Die Melodieführung des Stückes ist so eingängig wie zuletzt vielleicht auf dem 2001er Album „Rock Action“, klingt jedoch so, als würden die Instrumente von einem Roboter gespielt werden. -

Ohad Benchetrit - Justin Small A bit about us, Ohad Benchetrit & Justin Small: As founding members of critically acclaimed Toronto based band Do Make Say Think, we have been creating engaging, epic, and emotional music together for over 23 years. As composers, our focus has always centered around melody, artistic integrity, passion, and spirited experimentation. This has opened the door to a decades long career in film composition. We’ve always picked projects with lots of heart and beauty and believe score to be an integral part of the story telling. To add color, and emotion but not to lead. To add feel but not to persuade. We’ve been honored with multiple awards, including the 2018 JUNO award for best instrumental album with our work with Do Make Say Think, the Best Original Score in 2016 at the LA scream Fest and a Canadian Screen Award in 2012 for Best original score for a documentary for Semi-Sweet: Life in Chocolate We pride ourselves on finding the right emotional tone that both the director and picture are trying to convey. With Ohad's classical training and Justin's minimalist and immediate sense of melody we feel we have created a unique sound and style of film composition that holds the emotional crux of the entire project in the highest order. We love what we do. Garry Brents has been a close collaborator for many years and it was an absolute delight doing this interview with him three and a half years ago. Perhaps we will do a follow up to this interview in the future! -Hey Garry. Will you quickly introduce yourself, and mention your musical background to begin with? The bands you’ve been in, including collaborations. Hello, first of all I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. My musical background started when I was at the age of 7. I started playing piano for a few years. I didn’t enjoy it at first, but I grew to like it. I’d always try to make up something instead of learn how to play other songs. A few years later, I learned how to play the trumpet but only played for 2 years. I wish I still knew how to play. When I got into High School is the time I started thinking about writing my own music. I took bass guitar lessons for 2 years, but continued to teach myself and learn more on my own. So I’ve been playing that instrument the longest for about 9 years now. I self-taught myself guitar based on some of the knowledge from bass lessons and just feeling it out, maybe 6 years ago. The list of bands that I’ve been in (serious or not) are the following in chronological order: Ghastrah Proxiima, Garrsinn, From a Residence of Stars & Gnosis (changed to smoosz in ’08), Lunarian Sea, Darkphone, Semen Across Lips, Synthetic Onslaught, Sugar Highlands, Parabstruse, Cara Neir, They Mostly Come Out At Night, bunrage, Writhe. -
