Jack: Exactly! As the whole book is based upon that premise, it gets a little dreary and repetitive. The lineup for that festival is ludicrous. After you've marvelled at the discovery of a band you'd never heard of, thanks to the twists and turns of language, and then been helped to rediscover something from the back of your record collection for me it was Do Make Say Think and Fly Pan Am , you're left with a series of descriptions of bands you haven't heard. Roy rated it really liked it Dec 21, However, this means that the book becomes incredibly repetitive. Jack: Yeah. And they sound massive as well and I think while most bands sound quite like a negotiation between different egos, Godspeed just sound completely indivisible and they sound bigger for it. Many of the initial reviews for CODY were tepid. I think this is mostly just down to the idea that as the genre stopped evolving, it also becomes less interesting to read about. There was no guitar or vocal melody to which the members had to be subservient. Give it a go, you might achieve it. Due to the current situation with Covid, at the moment we cannot guarantee when your parcel will ship. It's written by a fan for fans. Featuring over 30 first-hand interviews with some of the most prominent names in post-rock - including members of Mogwai, Tortoise, Mono, Isis, Slint, God Is An Astronaut and producer Steve Albini - Storm Static Sleep follows one of music's most nomadic terms through every stage of its transformation. Additional information Weight 0. My favourite experience of seeing them was, again, at Primavera. It might have been better written as an encyclopaedia to dip into rather than a series of chapters that cluster the bands together into a narrative of sorts. They just want to make music. That's a lower proportion than women on the boards of FTSE companies. In the process of telling this history, author Jack Chuter recalls and interrogates the various bands and influencers that drove others to question the limits of their songwriting, while talking to both the artists that renounced the post-rock label and the journalists and writers that championed it. Works as an expansion of Jeanette Leech's book on Post Rock, Fearless , though this book came out first. My impression has always been that post-rock fans are more disproportionately male than for many other genres. Storm Static Sleep sets the record straight. Storm Static Sleep: A Pathway Through Post-Rock Writer While the former took the sound of Slint and smashed it into the shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine no doubt inspiring Mono and Explosions In The Sky to do the same a few years later , the latter remains an absolute masterwork of implication and restraint. Appropriate for its title, the record seemed to harness the power of the tides. This also leaves blind spots. Aug 15, Brett rated it it was ok. Yet as Loop became Main, the songs started to melt away. As a walk through of a form of music I enjoy but know I have a lot to learn about, this is a great start. Related Articles. I never expected to be writing about the electro cock rock of Trans Am or the sculpted drones of Main. Additional information Weight 0. This book would have worked much better as an album-guide organized by bands with short essays where necessary to tie disparate elements together. Where would it go? When I asked bassist Bundy K. They also stand out on their own, for me, as well. A great read overall, and one I would recommend to any fans of the expansive musical palette, as the exploration of its full reach is more than adequately covered. He prefers, I guess, to mimic the ethereal quality of his favorite bands, gliding along a tributary of distortion, brushed percussion prose, and electronic warbling, allowing bands to materialize in the mix and then, just as quietly, fade away. This is profoundly weird music by any standard calibration. However, this means that the book becomes incredibly repetitive. In counterbalance, there were horrible storms of drone and distortion, galloping like a Morricone soundtrack gone wrong, channelling the notion that worldly evil is insatiable and omnipresent. Just fucking amazing. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up. Godspeed You! More by VF Team. While most double albums feel like mountainous accomplishments, Swans sounded utterly at home within minute track durations and tectonically gradual accumulations of momentum. Jack: Yeah, exactly. This was the problem of the medium perhaps. So basically that last chapter, I speak about Swans and then a project called Wrekmeister Harmonies. Over the past twenty-five years post-rock has evolved from a handful of bands challenging the dynamics, timbre and conventional format and concept of rock songwriting, into a scene with a huge international community of both bands and steadfast fans. Where would it go? Go Pop was a protest against those utopian, vacuum-sealed bubbles of radio pop, in which only real instruments and complimentary harmonies were permitted to thrive. In the process of telling this history, author Jack Chuter recalls and interrogates the various bands and influencers that drove others to question the limits of their songwriting, while talking to both the artists that renounced the post-rock label and the journalists and writers that championed it. CODY was a band that had learned to stand strong. Motion Pool generated space rather than dwelled within it, swapping instant catharsis for a meticulous compositional process. The album erected its own understanding of time and space and stranded the listener within it. How much you enjoy either book likely depends on which era one finds more interesting. The most glaring for me is the relationship between post-rock and women. Average rating 3. Not always in a complimentary sense. Storm Static Sleep: A Pathway Through Post-Rock Read Online Probably the best book about post-rock you can get? The first time that Another Language truly made sense to me, I was sat on the train home after a hour nightshift. The fact is this: the story of post-rock is riddled with contradiction and confusion, with the term being frequently abused as a journalistic miscellaneous by those that fail to understand it, reshaping its meaning over time like a Chinese whisper.

  • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • Mogwai – As the Love Continues
„As The Love Continues“ beginnt in Form von ‚To The Bin My Friend, Tonight We Vacate Earth‘ mit sehr dezenten Tönen, sanftem Schlagzeugspiel und sparsamen Melodien. Ganz in Bandtradition legen die Schotten im Laufe dieses Stücks Soundschicht um Soundschicht übereinander, bevor der Einsatz verzerrter Gitarren und die so Mogwai-typische Laut-Leise- Dynamik das Stück in einer voluminösen, aber dennoch organischen Wall of Sound zu Ende gehen lassen. Das anschließende ‚Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever‘ wird durch piepende Synthesizer-Sounds eingeleitet, welche stilistisch an die schottischen Landsleute vonBoards of Canada denken lassen. Die Melodieführung des Stückes ist so eingängig wie zuletzt vielleicht auf dem 2001er Album „Rock Action“, klingt jedoch so, als würden die Instrumente von einem Roboter gespielt werden.

Ohad Benchetrit - Justin Small A bit about us, Ohad Benchetrit & Justin Small: As founding members of critically acclaimed Toronto based band Do Make Say Think, we have been creating engaging, epic, and emotional music together for over 23 years. As composers, our focus has always centered around melody, artistic integrity, passion, and spirited experimentation. This has opened the door to a decades long career in film composition. We’ve always picked projects with lots of heart and beauty and believe score to be an integral part of the story telling. To add color, and emotion but not to lead. To add feel but not to persuade. We’ve been honored with multiple awards, including the 2018 JUNO award for best instrumental album with our work with Do Make Say Think, the Best Original Score in 2016 at the LA scream Fest and a Canadian Screen Award in 2012 for Best original score for a documentary for Semi-Sweet: Life in Chocolate We pride ourselves on finding the right emotional tone that both the director and picture are trying to convey. With Ohad's classical training and Justin's minimalist and immediate sense of melody we feel we have created a unique sound and style of film composition that holds the emotional crux of the entire project in the highest order. Parabstruse Interview Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on Sadness By Name back in January of 2010 as “Interview with Garry Brents of Parabstruse”. Garry Brents has been a close collaborator for many years and it was an absolute delight doing this interview with him three and a half years ago. Perhaps we will do a follow up to this interview in the future! -Hey Garry. Will you quickly introduce yourself, and mention your musical background to begin with? The bands you’ve been in, including collaborations. Hello, first of all I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. My musical background started when I was at the age of 7. I started playing piano for a few years. I didn’t enjoy it at first, but I grew to like it. I’d always try to make up something instead of learn how to play other songs. A few years later, I learned how to play the trumpet but only played for 2 years. I wish I still knew how to play. When I got into High School is the time I started thinking about writing my own music. I took bass guitar lessons for 2 years, but continued to teach myself and learn more on my own. So I’ve been playing that instrument the longest for about 9 years now. I self-taught myself guitar based on some of the knowledge from bass lessons and just feeling it out, maybe 6 years ago. The list of bands that I’ve been in (serious or not) are the following in chronological order: Ghastrah Proxiima, Garrsinn, From a Residence of Stars & Gnosis (changed to smoosz in ’08), Lunarian Sea, Darkphone, Semen Across Lips, Synthetic Onslaught, Sugar Highlands, Parabstruse, Cara Neir, They Mostly Come Out At Night, bunrage, Writhe.
